big moment in Australia as Chinese imports surpassed Japanese for the first time. Japan had 28 year stranglehold in Australia.
For clarity, the breakthrough is in relation to manufacturing country of origin, not brand sales. A solid proportion of Japanese brand vehicles for Australia are produced in Thailand, including all of the utes, so the two are far from interchangeable. Toyota RAV4 is the #1 selling vehicle here that is sourced from Japan, and that vehicle is currently in transition from one generation to the next. As stock of new model arrives, Japan will probably reclaim the #1 spot, at least temporarily.
(So far as I can tell, the only Chinese brand vehicle produced in Thailand for the Australian market is GWM Ora.)
