They say the guy actually knows at least usable level of mandarin but was trying to pretend he didn't for whatever reason.

I looked at alice su's articles for LA Times, 90%+ where negative about China. I see ant-china female chinese reporters working for foreign media all the time, wonder whys that?

Yeah I don't even know what to say, he shouldn't even be allowed in China IMO. I guess these "mobs" should learn from those "pro-democracy protesters" and give this guy a proper greeting next time they see him.

I love this reply on how to treat journalists. Says it all.

Nah they’ll just say that they are plain clothed police officers who happen to look like overweight uncles and grandpas.
I don't think they're plain clothes police, but that doesn't mean they have good intentions.

There's a YouTube video

of a person trying to talk about the flood. She was a survivor talking about how she was lucky to escape and lots of other people died. As she was talking some arsehole intervened to shut her up, going on about the foreign media and China being "smeared". You can see how she just shuts down. She's not "heroically" being quiet to "save China's reputation", she's being bullied in public and is clearly distressed.

I expect those people going after the international media in China are like the arsehole from the video. They don't care about the victims or their families, they're just gits who want to divert attention from the tragedy because they're more interested in protecting an image of their country that they have in their heads. As if China is the only country in the world to face flooding and have people die, and that if there's a transparent public discussion some tragedy will befall the PRC on the international stage.

It doesn't matter if they're doing it of their own initiative or they're part of some neighbourhood committee that's received orders

to shift coverage from the dead to recovery. It also not unsurprising for the local authorities to try to hide the flower memorials - well done to the locals for ripping the walls down by the way. But there's no excuse for people to bully those who just want to talk about what happened to them or their relatives. People like that should be ashamed of themselves.

That sentence better describes what BBC et al. are doing with their reporting to push a narrative about China's contributions against climate change.

How do you even know they don't care about the decreased or their families?

It would be indeed disgusting if they tried to stop people from talking on Weibo or Douyin about their experiences, but as Western MSM is basically weaponized journalism ran by activist-journalists, I see no problem in reminding people any form of cooperation with Western MSM undermines the nation's and consequently one's own interests. The very act of accepting interviews from Western MSM give them legitimacy.

There has also been coverage of Germany's failure to address CO2 emissions. For example, there was a recent

about how the floods are forcing the German political elite to confront the issue. See this

from earlier in the year on how the German courts have ruled Germany's proposals are damaging the future of German children, or even this Bloomberg article

Besides, I would be appalled if non-Chinese journalists are being held to a higher standard than Chinese citizens when it comes to showing empathy over Chinese people dying. You can expect journalists to sometimes emphasis the bad rather than the good, but there is no excuse for anyone victimising a survivor for wanting to talk about their story.

The guy in the video is quite literally bullying the survivor in public. He's not trying to politely pull her aside and ask if she might reconsider talking in public because of various reasons. He has zero compassion, and his attitude is the same as the people in the videos having a go at the DW journalist. People who are focused on the victims do not give a damn about what foreigners are saying, because their attention is on the people who need help. If you've got time to chase after reporters because you suspect they might not report a story with 100% accuracy, you're giving lipservice to the victims and families.

Well given that Chinese social media is now censoring a lot of discussion of the flooding, especially where it might threaten the CCP's narrative over how many died, where do you expect the victims and their families to talk about this if not on the streets to anyone who wants to listen?

I have yet to read anything from you where you can actually showcase the objective advantages of the system you so desperately want for China to have and be governed with. I can also point out a number of P.R. medias that functions in the U.S. government and businesses where they can impose, sanctions the type of questions, the type of issues that can be raised on both entities and that's within the U.S. the bastion of "Freedom and Democracy" not to mention in many U.S. Allied Democratic countries like India. You need to take a chill pill and calm your Democracy/anti-China titties down man because your histrionics no matter how long winded you get won't affect most of our understanding and the nuances that's happening in the P.R.C.

Pointing out the number of deaths would from a once in a millennium flood for the people in Zhengzhou and the province of Henan will do exactly what? bring comfort to the remaining loved ones? And is your assumption that most people in the province wants to be constantly bombarded from the people that perish from the flood? Or is your trick or intention is to somehow insidiously blame the authorities that they are somehow, someway culpable to the deaths of the flood victims as if to suggest that their deaths were entirely preventable if it wasn't for the commies running the country. Is this your suggestion right? With this demented mindset that's pretty much prevalent and pervasive amongst your kind is it no wonder that more and more ordinary Chinese people (non governmental entities) are becoming fed up from the constant lies, underhanded tactics to weaken their country, by sowing discord, distrust which can result into instability for the country all because you and your democratic imperialist zealots want to upend the country at all costs. There's no disaster big or small that you and your ilk would not pass on the opportunity to lambaste and create alternative reality in which the government of China isn't the enemy that must be upended and be toppled. That's your intention always was and always will be. But as a Chinese person who has been to the west all I can say to you is good luck with that.

Man, you need to do a better job of convincing people here that you Americans aren't brutal with your bullying people that don't toe the same political leanings on just about every issue. I mean look at the covid-19 shit show in your country. There are a lot of Covid-19 survivors who used to be anti-mask, anti-vaccine until they got Covid-19 and some of which almost died. Once they changed their tunes these people gets attacked, bullied, harassed offline and online, worst of all they get death threats. Lol and you have the f..ng nerve to make comments on a country you're absolutely clueless about. Stick to the country and culture that you're most intimately familiar with and stop making sweeping accusations not to mention generalizations on any given issues where your knowledge is rather rudimentary and or based entirely on ignorance.
