The only reason why they picked Robert Pattinson to be Batman is hoping they can get the Twi-hards to go watch it. It's ironic because women are always saying movies made for guys are dumb yet young female fans aren't even interested in any sort of story. They watch movies just for the star. The backlash against Star Wars shows how longtime Star Wars fans aren't as loyal in the eyes of studios. There's less risk banking on a popular star with a proven fanbase than writing a good story as important to the success of a movie.

I'm following an awesome new Chinese series, called "The Longest Day in Chang'An". It's on Amazon Prime.

This is a new series about, in ancient China of the Tang dynasty (~600 A.D.), officials trying to hunt down a band of terrorists who attempt to burn down the then capital city of Chang'An on the day of the Lantern festival (15 days after the Chinese New Year). This is a similar type of suspense/thriller as "24", and is based on a famous Chinese novel.

It is not only a very exciting and thrilling story, but also a superbly acted drama. The series employs an excellent blend of young and good-looking stars and highly experienced actors. Very well-made series.

Additionally, the author of the original book and the director of the series took pain to make the series as authentic as they possibly could. They researched everything down to the kind of sewage used back in the Tang dynasty, as well as the kind of dried mint chewed by one of the officers. For makeup, clothing and everything else (even the way they greet each other) that is happening in the series, they gave up all the stylish stuff and went with everything authentic based on the paintings, pottery and literature of the same era. For the look of the whole entire city, they based everything on historical literature and architectural books describing what Chang'An looked like in the Tang dynasty.

Even the fight scenes are very authentic. No more wire-fu and all the flying and stylish kicking and stuff. Almost all the fight scenes look like street fights with solid punches and kicks. A lot of authentic wrestling moves.

The Tang dynasty has been widely considered to be at the height of the ancient Chinese civilization, in terms of military might, economy, culture, etc. Chang'An, being the capital city, was a full-fledged international metropolitan with over 1 million population and a large population of foreign residents from Europe, Mid-East and other parts of Asia. Because of the authenticity of the series, if you are interested in seeing what Chang'An looked like at its prime, go watch the series.

Cool. I will have to go check it out. I spend a lot of time in Xi'an and went to school there. We used to walk around the area North of the (old) Train Station and marvel at the mounds that used to be Daming Palace. It was quite the kick coming back after so many years away and seeing they had cleared away the villages there and started to unearth the old palace (about 2x the size of the Forbidden City in Beijing). Highly recommend a trip there if you can.

Shanghai Fortress is out in Netflix.

This movie flopped at the Chinese box office and the director had to make a formal apology to the public. Now that I have lowered your expectations, go enjoy.

So just how bad is it? I don't want to waste two hours of my life if I can avoid it.

SFX earns a five star. But the plot was cheesy and predictable, a bit patronizing. Characters flat with bad acting. So basically B movie grade scifi movie with polished SFX.

The latest news
Back to Middle-earth
t's no surprise, but in September 2019, Amazon Studios announced that the show will shoot in New Zealand. Pre-production has started, the company said, and production on the series soon will begin in Auckland.

"As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff," showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement. "And we're happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings."

Casting rumors
In early September 2019,

that Will Poulter (Colin in Black Mirror's Bandersnatch, Mark in Midsommer) will star in the series. That same report said that Australian actress Markella Kavenagh will also play a role. Amazon Studios wouldn't confirm or comment on this report when contacted by CNET.

"I can't wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never-before-seen story," Bayona said in a statement.

The basics: What and when?
WHAT... Amazon bought the global TV rights to Tolkien's (

) Lord of the Rings saga, though what exactly the company will do with those rights could evolve. Right now plans are for a multiseason series set in that pre-Fellowship time period called The Second Age.

But there may be more than one show: Amazon's initial press release noted that the deal includes a potential additional spin-off series. Our guess is we'll have to see how the first show does before going there.

WHEN... And that first show will be around for a while: The

Amazon to commit to five seasons, as well as begin production within two years. Since the deal was announced in November 2017, expect to hear some news on the series before November 2019.

How to watch
As you almost certainly know, Amazon has moved well beyond an online bookstore (those were the days...), and has an entertainment arm of its own. Amazon Video is a premium on-demand entertainment service that not only licenses content but also makes its own. Amazon Studios has produced such original series as The Man in the High Castle and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as movies.
