I dunno, Karl Urban (Judge Dredd) is a pretty big star. He was McCoy in Star Trek, starred with Bruce Willis in R.E.D., was one of the main Human characters for the Human side in the third part of Lord of the Rings, was the number 2 bad guy in The Chronicles of Riddick, etc. Pretty important parts in big name titles.

He never took off his helmet the entire time in Judge Dredd though...

I watched Die Hard 5 over the weekend and I have to say it was a tad disappointing. Don't get me wrong...it was a good action flick but as a DH franchise it wasn't very good because it doesn't 'fit' into the typical DH theme. DH is about a cop.. a regular guy basically finding himself in impossible situation and using his wits and guts and a lot of pure luck to emerge victorious at the end. He got hurt, he was venerable and he was in pain.. he was basically mortal.

In this DH, the movie was more akin to the typical Stallone/Seagal/Schwarzenegger flick.. the heroes were basically immuned to bullets and pain.. you know the typical ex special forces guy trained in 10000 ways to kill a guy and expert in everything warfare.
As a stand alone action flick this would be allright but to play it off the DH theme I don;t think it did the other movies any justice at all.

I don't think Karl Urban can be considered a big star yet. He's nowhere close to be considered a main character in the Lord of the Rings. All he did was fighting. He had less than 5 lines in the entire trilogy. And #2 BAD guy in a B-movie (The Chronicles of Riddick) is not something to brag about. Can this even be compared with what Stallone was in the 90's??? Stallone was THE man in action movies (of course, there were also "Ahnold", Willis, etc). So as far as the star power, the new Judge Dredd is nothing...

Last night, History channel had a new show called "Ultimate soldiers", which had 3 teams of highly trained professional soldiers competing for a title of Ultimate soldiers. They have to go through some cool head-to-head competitions, like shooting, knife-fighting, etc. The coolest part is the last competition, which had the final two teams going into a town to extract intel. There are people defending the place. So they had to fight their in and out with the objects they are asked to extract. I think this is the first of its kind. Normally, you see someone in a shooting or endurance competition. This is the first time, to me at least, I see two groups directly at each other's throat in a knife fight. What is even cooler is the teams had to engage in actual gun fight (with practice ammunition). One contestant from the 82nd Airborne even commented "I wish they had something like this at Ft Bragg). That's some compliment...

Yeah, I know, I find that pretty weird that he didn't took off his helmet at all. I do like the DNA identification only on their weapons (same tech like in James Bond SkyFall).

‘Journey To The West’ Breaks China Box Office Records In Holiday Bow
By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Deadline.com – 21 hours ago.. .

Don Groves is a Deadline contributor based in Sydney.

The Stephen Chow-directed action comedy scored RMB 76.85M ($12.3M) on its opening day February 10 during the Chinese New Year holidays, the biggest first day for a local production in history. Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons took in $93.5M during its first week, a record for any film in the territory — local or foreign — and reached $100M in receipts in eight days, also the fastest ever to the mark. The pic was one of the first two films released by the nascent Village Roadshow Pictures Asia, the Greater China film division of Village Roadshow Entertainment Group. VRPA co-produced the pic with Bingo Movie Development, Chinavision Media Group and Edko Films. It also has grossed $3.1M in Hong Kong, ranked No. 2 behind A Good Day To Die Hard; $2.56M in Taiwan; $2.3M in Malaysia and $1.4M in Singapore. The other VRPA title, Say Yes!, a Chinese-language remake of the 1991 Fuji TV drama 101st Marriage Proposal, grossed $7.5M on Valentine’s Day, a record for a romance movie. Valentine’s Day has become the highest-grossing day in China’s annual box office — this year it hit $32.1M, a single-day record. Village Roadshow Pictures Asia says it’s the first foreign co-producer to capture the top two box office spots in China at the same time. Next up for the company is Man Of Tai Chi, directed by and starring Keanu Reeves.

China Daily reported that the Spring Festival holiday, which ran February 9-15, set an industry record of $121M. Among the U.S films in release, Cloud Atlas has rung up $25.6M since January 31, Skyfall has amassed nearly $64M, and Jack Reacher made $2.7M on its opening day. The Chinese box office has achieved an average annual growth of by 30% in recent years, driven in part by a massive proliferation of cinemas, now with more than 9,600 screens.

I was reading a story about how Great Britain is suffering an image problem in China that's affecting business and tourism. It was reported that people in China are seeing on the internet the anti-foreigner sentiment (not directly pointing the finger at Chinese) happening in Great Britain and it's turning off the Chinese. The Chinese people have access to what's going on in Great Britain? What happened to the Great Firewall of China? Well it's interesting how the Western entertainment media at the end of 2012 were gloating how Western movies reign over Chinese domestic. I wonder if the Chinese have seen all the gloating. I just read another story where now Hollywood is seeing a change in the Chinese box office favoring domestic productions.

I am not much of a movie watcher or enthusiast, cuz I normally don't watch anything other then documentaries. But I did decide to watch "Red Dawn" and I have to say, whoever came up with such a storyline, is smoking some really serious crap. I mean North Korea invading America? Come on! Who the hell writes this stuff? Utterly a waste of my time ....... I switched off the TV after only 15 mins of watching this stupidity!

Yep. Whoever has served in the US military should feel insulted by this movie. I mean NK managed to pass all the warning systems, satellites, navy, AF, etc. and actually landed on American soil without anyone knowing??? The soldiers have been trained so hard just to prevent such thing from happening. In reality, any NK planes/ships would be immediately detected and tracked the moment they leave NK territory. And the movie is suggesting that it's all up to a few untrained and undisciplined teenagers to save the day??? In fact, all the scientists and engineers involved in any kind of weapons development on this planet, addition to soldiers, should feel insulted by this movie. Soviets? there is a possibility, however slim it is... But NK? What a load of crap!

Good grief, guys, it's a fictional story. That means its not true, that it is not meant to be real.

In the movie, it explains how through a series of events, a large multi-nation alliance forms in the Western Pacific including China, Korea, Russia, etc.

Then they plan a surprise attack using a new technology they develop to neutralize electronics, except for their own. So, when massive power and electronic disruption occurs, as the movie explains, it leaves the US trying to figure out what happened...even their EMP hardened devices fail.

Clearly, a technology that is far fetched to imagine being available and then used on such a massive scale. Like sci-fi. But that is why it is fiction.

So, based on that scenario, the Russians invade the East Coast and North Korea goes into the Pacific Northwest with China I suppose doing the rest of the west coast. The movie focuses in on the experiences of a group of people in the Spokane Washington area who end up being led, not by a teenager, but by a seasoned Iraq/Afghanistan vet who then trains his brohter and a bunch of other young people in their late teens and early twenties to fight back.

I saw this movie with my son-in-law who is serving active duty in the US Navy and with several veteran friends and we all enjoyed it...because we didn't take it so seriously. No one was offended that I saw, certainly not in our group.

If this type of fiction is not your cup of tea...it's simple, don't spend any money on it. To date, it has done about $45 million in 13 weeks. Not a big hit by any stretch, but not a flop either.

My wife and I saw Safe Haven this last weekend. A decent suspense/thriller/romance that we both liked.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Ang Lee won the Best Director Oscar for his adventure film "Life of Pi" at Sunday night's 85th Academy Awards Ceremony.
He beat Michael Haneke for "Amour," Benh Zeitlin for "Beasts of the Southern Wild," Steven Spielberg for "Lincoln" and David O. Russell for "Silver Linings Playbook" to win the golden statue.

"Life of Pi" features a young Indian named Pi, who finds the world he knows swept away when his family sells their zoo and sets sail for Canada with a few of its remaining animals. When a storm capsizes the ship, only Pi escapes and is set adrift in a lifeboat that is also the refuge of an enormous Bengal tiger.

"I really want to thank you for believing this story and sharing this incredible journey with me," Lee said in his acceptance speech.

The film also won three other Oscars Sunday night, for best original score, best cinematography and best stunning visual effects. It won more awards than "Lincoln" and "Argo," which were also among the hottest nominees.

Coming from China's Taiwan, the 58-year-old Lee won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001 for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and another for Best Director in 2006 for "Brokeback Mountain". He is the only person of Asian descent to win the directing gong and one of a handful to have won that award more than once.
In an after-ceremony interview by Chinese media, Lee said he believed Asian films would come to the main stage of the world sooner or later. "I was born in Asia and grown up with Chinese education. It is natural for me to put Asian thinking into Western things."

"This film of mine is about India. So it can be seen as an Asian film, although it uses English language," Lee said in Chinese.

The film, which cost 120 million U.S. dollars, has earned nearly 600 million dollars worldwide. Lee said most of the earnings came from outside China.

Lee said he felt warm that he won the award on the day of the Lantern Festival, a Chinese traditional festival on which families get together, eating Tang Yuan, a food made from sticky rice.

LONDON, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The movie "Life of Pi" by Chinese director Li An, known to Western audiences as Ang Lee, won the Best Cinematography and Special Visual Effects at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards.

Li told Xinhua, "This is the hardest movie I have made. I am very proud of how the movie was praised everywhere in the world, particularly in China. It is a great feeling to be here. It has been a privilege to make this movie. Everything else is a bonus."

I've still haven't seen Lincoln or even Life of Pi yet. I was surprised to see the movie Argo win best picture, now it got me interesting to go see it. I thought Lincoln for sure will win it, but Daniel Day Lewis did deserve that Oscar for bets acting.
