A big advantage of the type 10 is that it can maintain aim and fire rounds while doing a slalom maneuver or zig-zaging left and right.
Even a tank that is in a still position will have difficulties in hitting a target moving in that way.
The US military is pressuring the JSDF to give away the secret behind how the type 10 is able maintain aim during such maneuver as well as the highly powerful diesel engine that powers the type 10.
The US had to rely on turbine engines to power their M1A1 Abrams which is also known as gas guzzlers which hinders various tactics since they cannot move too far from the support chain to maintain their constant need to refuel.

Nice Samurai but not a full Sqn 12 by Sqn same for Type 90, 16 for Type 74.
I would not under estimate a 44 tons tank even it is from Japan or anywhere. The power of a MBT comes from its main gun and fire control system, not its tonnage. A Chinese proverb says 骄兵必败 roughly translates as an over self-proud troop will eventually lose. The only way to win a battle is to know who you are facing to and what/how capable they are. Like Sun-zi says 知己知彼, 百战不殆 "Precise knowledge of self and precise knowledge of the threat leads to victory"

Type 10 is considered with K-2 as the best MBTs in service possibly better shielded with its special shielding but K-2 have a 55 caliber gun not Type 10 her turet can receive this size.
After T-14 can surely match but not all information are available.

The recent addition of an APU to the Abrams is going to increase range. A lot of people deride the Gas turbines for the Range issue, but in almost every other point the Turbines have the Edge. They offer incredible power to weight, Higher Reliability, equal to better potential speed ( the only reason for it's max speed of 45MPH is it has a Governor). The Abrams has the tech to fire on the move although yes Zig zag is another mator.

GRAFENWOEHR TRAINING AREA, Germany: Tank and maintenance crews from the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment assigned here are giving their M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks a buffed-up look that improves the tanks’ overall defensive capabilities.

The crews, with the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, which is serving as the initial ABCT rotational force in support of Atlantic Resolve, began installing the Abrams Reactive Armor Tile system Feb. 28 to tank hulls and turrets.

Reactive Armor ‘Adds Extra Layers of Protection’

“The ARAT adds extra layers of protection to the tank and the crew members,” said Army 1st Sgt. Ryan Dilling, senior noncommissioned officer of Bravo Company, the first unit to install the tiles.

The tiles “are placed on both sides of the hull and turret,” Dilling said. “The reactive tiles prevent penetration [by] various weapon systems, such as rocket-propelled grenades.”

Beefing up U.S. armor also serves as a greater deterrent to acts of aggression against NATO nations as the combat team rolls out stronger tanks to conduct training with allies throughout Central and Eastern Europe, Dilling said.

The addition of the angled tiles to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment’s tanks has been a cooperative effort with the Army’s Warren, Michigan-based Tank-automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command, said Army Maj. David Campbell, battalion operations officer.

“TACOM maintenance workers welded the brackets to hold the tiles on the tanks. After completion of the bracket welding, tank crews are then responsible for installing the reactive tiles,” Campbell said.

Deflecting the Blast

“Depending on what terrain you’re in, whether you’re in rural or urban terrain, the purpose of angled tiles is so that a blast will go down or upwards, which will allow the impact to deflect outward rather than at the tank crew,” Dilling said.

He said the angles of the tiles can be repositioned depending on the situation.

“If you have dismounts on the ground and they’re working in close proximity of the tank, you’d want to angle the tiles down so if there was a blast, it would go out and down to minimize the effect against soldiers nearby,” he said.

Dilling added, “If you were in an urban environment and you had adversaries shooting from second or third stories or even on rooftops and the tiles were activated, the blast would push out and upwards toward the threat.”

Army Capt. James England, Bravo Company commander, said the ARAT system adds protection while not inhibiting tank speeds.

“The ARAT looks like a good package,” England said. “In our current operating environment, should we have to engage a near-peer threat, we have to retain that mobility.”

U.S. Army M1 Abrams Tanks in Europe Are Getting Explosive Reactive Armor
S. Army soldiers in Europe are adding extra protection to their M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks in the form of explosive reactive armor. The explosive-filled packages could help the tanks stand up to increasingly advanced tanks and anti-tank munitions, like the ones Russia is developing or has already fielded to its own forces.

In January 2017, troops from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division began arriving at sites across northeastern Europe as part of Pentagon’s efforts to deter Russian aggression, known as Operation Atlantic Resolve. The next month, soldiers and contractors started fitting the Abrams Reactive Armor Tile (ARAT) suite to 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment’s tanks in Germany.


"The ARAT looks like a good package," Army Capt. James England, head of 1-66th’s Company B, told the service’s reporters. "In our current operating environment, should we have to engage a near-peer threat, we have to retain that mobility."


The kit includes racks that attach to the Abrams' hull and turret. Once in place, crews slot in a set of explosive-filled “tiles.” The hull arrangement is two layers, with curved tiles on top of boxy ones, while the turret only gets a single group of the angled versions.

When an incoming shell or rocket hits the blocks, they detonate, helping prevent the projectile from penetrating into the vehicle and protecting the crew. As with most reactive armor systems, ARAT tiles work once and then tankers must install new ones. Reactive armor first became widely popular in the 1970s.

The “near-peer threat” England was talking about is clearly a Russian Army that appears to be rapidly modernizing. In addition to American TOW missiles, both Soviet-era and newer Russian-made anti-tank weapons—along with Iranian copies—have made a mark on recent fighting in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

The main driver for the Type 10 seems to be the roads of Japan. The type 90 was a great tank but it's weight means it can only really be deployed to Hokkaido. Which is fine if you only need to protect the northern island of Japan. Type 10 by being lighter can move across more of the Nation's roads, cities and forests. Japan does not have a lot of Open Plains or traditionally Tank Friendly terrain.

if the US want .. it can get easily anything from Japanese military secret ... no doubt .... but I highly doubt that there is any :p .. unfortunately

For proof or other :=) you don't have all especialy special things in more military on internet dude ofc ; Jeff or some others reliable members which have a good knowledge in general dont provide and i trust... feeling question if ur aware u have...

Type 10 replace Type 74.

Almost all Type 90 was based to Hokkaido about 300 whose 230 in the 7th Armored Division - receive her 1st Type 10 this year - on 341 out only 4 Sqns so ~ 50 Type 90.

Remains 250 Type 74, 66 Type 10 delivered 88 ordered right now, in general each year 10 new for about a Sqn, inferior rate than Type 90, 340 in 20 years, 17 by year.

650 tanks a very decent fleet Japan is a insular country don't need a big fleet.

One of the Most Advanced STEALTH Tank concept !

PL-01 is a Polish armoured fighting vehicle created by OBRUM with support from BAE Systems, based on the Swedish CV90120-T light tank.The concept vehicle was first unveiled at the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce on 2 September 2013. With the program being approved, mass production is now confirmed and is scheduled to begin in 2018.

When it was announced there was some debate about the weight of the PL01, some claim 35 tons Others say between 40-45 tons which means the PL01 concept sits right on the borderline between a light tank and a Modern Main battle tank.

The full power version of the PL01 concept had a 50 caliber 120mm Ruag Compact tank gun there was talk of a 105mm gun version. Coax was likely a UKM-2013C(L) a Polish 7.62x51mm related to the PK series. Shown version has a Remote weapons station with a UKM 2000 a member of the same family of weapons as the Coax although it was said to be capable of mounting a 50 cal machine gun, likely the WKM-B a 12.7x99mm Browning Machine gun ( NATO standard ) version of the NSV.
the Chassis would be based on the CV90 and Anders family both IFV's which makes me wonder if they might follow it up with a IFV version replacing the unmanned tank turret with a IFV turret and reconfiguring the crew compartment for infantry or a scout version.

PL01 was claimed to use a Hybrid powertrain. This is not unique Hybrid electric power plants have been around for decades. the First Attempt at an electric drive with a conventional power pack in a tank dates back to world war 1 the germans tried it again in world war 2. In the last decade, the US and Europe have been pushing it again with the US AHED, Swedish SEP, US Stryker E and bae systems hybrid electric tank demonstrator. The advantages of a Hybrid system are that first for mobility Electric motors are far superior to conventional mechanical, They have torque and Torque is what makes vehicles move. 2 If combined with batteries you get a very quiet and low heat and vehicle with lots of power options. for equipment. finally of course there is the lower emissions.

PL01 most visible feature is it's extensive use of Low observable features The shaping of the PL01 seems to indicate some degree of Radar cross section reduction but this is minor as tanks on the ground only need to blend with surface features and really this is a smaller reduction the larger reduction is in thermal signature. PL01 is aimed to IR stealth. it's key feature is an active IR thermal camouflage system that alters the surface temperature of the the vehicle to mimic its surroundings or even enemy vehicles. it also has a design to control and muffle exhaust. to better hide.
Infact PL01 places so much emphasis on this it's actually the main survival feature of the vehicle.

the Armor protection of PL01 is all around 14.5mm protection with add on protection for up to 40mm threats, That would rule it out as an MBT it's a light tank. IT's a glass cannon A heavy punch but thin protection. to make up for this PL01 has it's stealth features, conformal smoke grenade launchers and a Hard kill active defence system possibly LEDS-150.
In fact Poland has seemed to confirm this with continued upgrades of their Leopard 2A4 and Leopard 2A5 to the new Leopard 2PL type leopard_2pl_l1.jpg
even farther Poland has designed another new MBT the PT16. PT16.jpg 47.5 tonnes, The hull seems based on T72 and PT91 MBT PT16-1.jpg Like the PL01 PT16 has a Autoloader, this one in the Turret bustle. This is however a conventional MBT with a manned turret and seems have much less of a stealth design.

PL01 is innovative it's aim is to introduce stealthy features directly into future armored vehicle directly from the start. It may not be a true MBT but I think it, K2, Armata and Type 10 show the road map of future armored vehicles for the 2020-2030s the next generation of fighting vehicles. they introduce new features to reduce weight, increase survivability and mobility.
