Most British officials don’t hold anything of worth in China, hence their boldness. Rather than merely reciprocate the very specifically crafted British sanctions designed to minimise blowback, China should make it clear that if the British really are stupid enough to follow through with these idiotic threats, China’s response would be to sanction the MPs and Peers involved personally such that any company that does any business with them are in breech of Chinese sanctions and subject to disportioncate penalties. AKA, the Fat Pomp sanctions.
Western legalised corruption works on the basis on deferred payments. When you do business people favours while you are in power, you get zero money directly immediately. However, you get a favour to call in. In which case you can expect to get paid extravagant sums to ‘sit’ on boards and do essentially nothing, all without even having to go to the inconvenient of even physically attending board meetings to sit in a chair. Often you can do this while still serving in the government if you are so thick skinned. So long as you sign a piece of paper to declare these interests and promise these second jobs won’t impact on your day job, it’s all above board and perfectly legal.
Here is a bit long but very interesting discussion on this matter that only blew up thanks to how the British ruling elite have become so used to the above that they literally rewrote the rules when one of their own fell foul of the already ridiculously loose rules and generated a public backlash
Some good examples at around the 2 minute mark.
The point is, you threaten the companies with serious economic pain and suddenly they got no more board seats to fill.
