Global times piece about Zhao Wei:

Sounds to me there's a general initiative to remove celebrities with bad records from public view, and Zhao Wei is just the biggest name in the list.

No, I don’t think it’s that simple at all. Cancelling all her shows and movies would carry massive collateral damage to all the other innocent people involved in those shows and movies, and it’s extremely high profile and would not be a step to be taken lightly or often.

The article itself is almost explicit in linking her cancelling to Zhang Zhehan visiting the Yasukuni Warcrimes Shrine.

I myself have noticed firsthand an unhealthy degree of obsession with Japanese culture and products in younger generation Chinese youth. And that feels beyond what should be possible with just whatever you call their cartoons nonsense.

Given Zhao’s track record, it is entirely on brand for her to have made some deal with Japanese elites to actively promote Japanese culture in China.

The whole Yasukuni stunt could have been organised by her as some grand phase 2 project to rehabilitate that foul institution with Chinese youth by roping in a popular and naive young star to normalise visiting it. He China done nothing, it would have been inevitable that some of his more hardcore and stupid fans would have also flocked to visit the shrink to ape their idol.

For the Chinese authorities to have moved on her so quickly and so thoroughly suggests she has been on their radar for some time, and this was the last straw and crossing a red line all in one.

I think she was singled out as the snake head at the heart of Japanese influence operations in China, and also as the proverbial chicken to warn all the other Chinese celebrities to not let fame go to their heads, because no matter how big or powerful you think you are, you will still get cancelled without a second’s hesitation if you are moronic enough to try to bite the hand that feds you.

You can't blame the Chinese youth for being attracted to Japanese culture. Basically, a lot of Japanese or perhaps much of traditional Japanese culture was taken by the Tang Dynasty. So, you get a taste of that through Japanese culture. Same thing with Korea when comes to the Ming dynasty. A lot( or much) of the so called Korean traditional culture comes from the Ming. A lot of butthurt in modern day Koreans from realizing that fact especially in the online sphere. Although, a lot of modern day Japanese culture is a lot of white worshipping and too pro West garbage.

Let's not lie to ourselves here. The Chinese youth's attraction to Japanese "culture" and Korean "culture" is mainly due to anime and K-Pop respectively and the previous generation of Chinese people's excessive and destructive self-deprecation.

Never heard about much of this Zhao Wei but then that's why the usual suspects in the West aren't calling for these Chinese celebrities to come join the promise land in the West propagandizing they would do better in the West than in China. No one knows who they are so they won't be making money in the West from celebrity. Chloe Zhao made the mistake of sucking up to the West by bashing China thinking that will gain her points and now Hollywood is having high anxiety if her past comments are going to prevent them from making money in China. That's what any anti-China Chinese have to think about who want in on US popular culture. It's like the Chinese rich. The West tries to lure them but because of American prejudice, they would never have and will be given the chance to be successful in the US. Jack Ma ain't going to jump ship to the US. His looks alone, because I've heard many Americans first comment on, would've have been an impediment from the start in the US. America's role models have to be white so they ain't going to allow anyone not white in and be successful. Look at how some Republican Congress people want to pass laws preventing NBA players from making money from Chinese sponsors. They don't want their celebrities like Lebron James not having anti-China antagonistic views because he makes big money from China. The US knows celebrity has that kind of power and they want to control it themselves just like a communist.

Anyone who thinks Japan or Korea preserve Tang or Ming culture better is fooling themselves. Except some cuisine, clothing, and infrastructures that are strongly influenced by Tang or Ming dynasty, not much in Japan or Korea can be said to be traced to traditional Chinese culture. In fact, Japanese are mostly westernized and Koreans are mostly Christianized. Unless, you want to preserve gender bias or kin/clan culture.

It is like many Chinese would say Hong Kong and Taiwan maintain Chinese culture better than China. The truth is Hong Kongers are the most westernized and Taiwanese are most Japanizing within greater China.

Not about who is more ''true'' to traditional Chinese culture but more about using that bridge to build more cultural ties to enhance Chinese cultural power. I think China eventually wants to enforce its own Monroe Doctrine in East Asia. Using their cultural connection to China is a good way to bring them into the Sinosphere fully once again. China has to promote something beyond ''economic prosperity'' and '' multilateralism'' to appeal neighboring countries. Something that taps into the emotional impulses of people. America being the bastion of ''liberal values'' does a lot for American softpower.
