Hunger sweeps India in Covid’s shadow as millions miss out on rations

"Desperation grows for those unable to access subsidised food, as worst hunger in two decades reported"...

I really don't understand Indians and India's obsession with China or it's pretentions that's it's relative power and strength is somehow on par to that of it's neighbour which is China. The amount of money it spends on it's defense/military would have been better spent on strengthening it's economic vitality and other strategic sectors that's essential for India to leverage the advantages it has like the population surplus and actually working to partner with it's neighbors like the RCEP and other trade deals. But no, the country instead is spending what little money it has on it's military industrial complex as it tries to attached itself to the American led QUAD alliance to constrain/contain China which is a hoot.

If you are a military official who received kick backs in the form of money and even maybe women, you’ll understand.

Wrong. India is NOT spending what little money it has on its MIC, which would be somewhat better, it is spending them on imports of foreign arms.
Which is what makes all this amusing. I believe that India is paying US to be its "ally". So many weapons it acquired - Apache, Chinook, Predator etc are in token numbers but billions in what money India can't spare.

After China deployed Light tanks and Armored IFVs, India was in a frantic search for them abroad. The Russian sprut will get selected.
If China somehow trips India into buying F35, then it's all going to be a funnier scenario.

US won’t sell F-35 to India until it is 2045. Once the Indians get a hold of it you can bet that Russians will have a clear look at everything from engine to avionics.

Nah, I think the bigger concern is reputational risk. With the way the Indians (mis)maintain their warplanes, there is a serious risk they would give the F35 a bad name by crashing it all the time.

But they will spun it around, and said that those crashes happened bcos vigilant and heroic Indian pilots had been training hard on the planes and the evil communist Chinese had step up pressure in whatever area making causing the Indian to need to keep flying those planes even past the planes limits. So all in all... Indians pilots are heroic, their maintanence is good, but the communists are evil. Crashes is caused by the Chinese.

I guess they must train extra hard on ones built and/or maintained by HAL.

China deploying more armed resources and men at relatively low costs to the area may force India into an arms race it can ill afford.
as members have pointed out in the past, by deploying large number of soldiers at a strategically insignificant border, which is an uninhabitable and unproductive land too, India will be spending huge resources for little or no gains at all.
if arms race is indeed an intentional Chinese goal, and India falling for it, then:
India spending less on naval assets,
less money for society development (hunger problem surfacing) and education --> discontent among the populace,
less money for infrastructure building.
in short, keeping a nationalistic and hostile India in the forever underdeveloped realm with no hope of challenging China in the near or long term future.
I am sure Modi government understands the plight India is in, but nationalistic frenzy once whipped up is difficult to tame.

So much noise coming from Indian side again. Contradictory information but only Shukla taking the "PLA has invaded" position. If what Shukla says is more correct, it is just activity taking place in the remaining dispute. It is no different to before Shukla's claim albeit with different shifts in specific positions. If there are "clashes" they are basically just PLA and IA movements within the 20%, potentially with confrontation between the two. Indian military officially denied this publicly. China has not issued a challenge to Indian statement. I would think Shukla is either totally wrong about this particular matter or wrong about the specifics.

Maybe no clashes and violence occurred but there is movement by one or both sides within the remaining dispute (so same old). Indian military did very specifically say no clashes happened. They didn't specify anything about movement.
Gen Naravane is on record to have rebutted news about clash last year, later Indian Army Chief proved wrong,is the Indian Army lying again? Even Modi said, 'na koi hamari seema mein ghuss aya hai,na hi ghussa hua hai,na koi bhi hamari posht kissy kay kabzay mein hai'.later we found that Indian Army lost 1450 sq kms in Ladakh and 15 large and small post were gone..
