Pakistan plans to sell JF-17 Thunder combat jets to Saudi Arabia
Press Trust of India | Islamabad | February 13, 2014 4:27 pm
Pakistan today said it is looking to sell JF-17 Thunder combat jets and trainer aircraft to Saudi Arabia, but rejected reports it was in talks with the oil-rich nation for nuclear cooperation. Saudi Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud is scheduled to visit Pakistan during February 15-17. The visit is expected to focus on deeper security and defence cooperation between the two sides.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told a weekly news briefing that defence cooperation would figure in the Crown Prince’s interactions and that Pakistan was eyeing Saudi Arabia as a market for military gear. “Certainly, defence cooperation would figure in the talks. The army chief would be calling him separately,” she said.
Pakistan is interested in selling arms to Saudi Arabia, including the JF-17 Thunder jet co-developed with China, the Mushak trainer aircraft and other equipment, she added. Aslam rejected recent Western media reports suggesting that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are looking at nuclear cooperation, describing them as “baseless”. “There is a whispering campaign and at times there are reports based on leaks or background briefings…They are baseless. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are not discussing nuclear cooperation,” she said.
This would be Crown Prince’s first visit to Pakistan after he became Defence Minister in 2011. Prince Salman, Aslam noted, was also the Deputy Prime Minister. During the visit, the Prince will hold talks with President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on bilateral and global issues of mutual interest.
Take it how you will but remember that the Saudi's are in a long standing Cold war of it's own, against the Iranians.
Both India and Pakistan sit close to the other side of the Iranian Boarder.
Although there is tough talk India and Pakistan relations are more or less controlled, they play up the bark but stop short of the bite. Any number of nations actively trade with both. The US, China, Russia and now the Saudi's. The Saudi's have always kept close relations with the Pakistani's and with the Obama Leading from Behind ( so he can retreat first ) The Saudi's are feeling the need to build up there strength particularly with the mess of Syria and Iraq.

Well if that is true (abt saudi defence delegation coming to Pakistan), then it certainly doesn't make any sense to me. When in the same month (February), they will also be giong to india to sign a Defence Cooperation Pact with Pakistan's enemy. Certainly not the sort of thing you'd expect, considering if you are to be potentially procuring Military Hardware from Pakistan. As the proposed defense pact will allow shared use and exchange of defense-related information, military training and education as well as cooperation in areas varying from hydrography and security to logistics.

Seems to me that saudis wanna play both sides, like most western countries have done in the past.

Saudis are not playing a zero-sum game. It is us Pakistanis who wish it to be so, because we view matters that way. I have no problem with Saudis engaging Indians. It is probably a smart thing for them to do. Whatever they do with Indians would pale in comparison if they commit to JF-17 (probably block IV).

In so far Pakistan is concerned, we will do what is best for our National Security. Defence cooperation means that they would share information related to military. However, there has been no news covering the details of the pact b/w the saudis and indians. So I would not go beyond be cautious.

I would welcome prospective client countries, interested in Pakistan's military hardware. But I would prefer that Pakistan shows calculated approach, on whom they choose to sell to. There is a fine line between marketing your product and bending over backwards to sell to anyone we could. Pakistan won't do that, cuz Pakistan ain't france!

It's not for us to say whom the saudis want to deal with, but that does not mean that we blindly sell to anyone.

Some pictures of the weapons load out

Includes the Mar-1 anti radiation missile from Brazil

500 lb low drag, 500 lb high drag, 1000 lb bombs and PL-5 WVR missile

The versatility of the JF-17 just keeps on extending Hope the naval weapons come along soon too

Fighters like Typhoon and Rafale are still under going many tests to integrate weapons like cruise missiles and new BVR missiles from that prospective the Pakistan Air Force is doing really really well from weapons integration point of view such a vast opition in such a short time

Babur cruise missile, C802 and CM-400 AKG will ensure no capital warship is safe out at sea when the Thunder is on a mission

Now soon will see ra'ad too.

Ra'ad would give the Thunder a great air launched cruise misisle capability long range stand off

And it's also nuclear capable, so people will know we have nukes and that stuff too

The Pakistan army has so far been custodians of the nuclear deterrence it's time to give the air force and the navy this honour

JF-17 equipped with Ra'ad will look like this

Sorry to sound so offensive, but that's an example why some don't take the Pakistani participation/content to the FC-1 program, the PAF and some Pakistani-fanboys so "much" seriously !!

To post a clearly psed image of a Matra Mica armed FC-1 fireing a Storm Shaddow / Apache ALCM and call it a Ra'ad is not the most clever move1.

Just my 2 cents.
