Re: New JF-17/FC-1 thread

You have a point there, but fighter planes are high Maintenance weapon of war. As they age, their Maintenance skyrocket after 20 years. (example: F-14D was retired way before they were obsolete). Since FC-1 is half the cost of J-10, they can buy thunder now and retire it 15-20 years down the line and buy another plane in 2025 that cost around 15 million dollar, a plane thats more capable than J-10 that is.

If jet fighter's Maintenance after 25 years isn't as expensive, I would agree with you. really!
Also PLAAF really need money for multiple project like H-8 and J-xx, I have never seen PLAAF spend as much on R&D ever. Tip of the spear offensive is important for PLAAF right now, most of them are based in Fucheng if you know what i mean.
If I say too much it would be considered political LoL.
Meanwhile, PLAAF cauld buy more J-7g and wait until J-10 cost 20 million in (2010 estimate), because of emphasis on 4.5-5th generation fighter/bomber.
mainland defense on the backburner since sino-russian diplomacy had improved.

I understand the argument. But it's actually the rumors of the J-XX that make me skeptical.

Imagine China buys lots of FC-1s now, and in ten years or so the J-XX starts ramping up production. Then you've got FC-1s, J-10s, J-11s, and J-XX in service all at the same time. The FC-1s would still have 20 years of life left, but already be somewhat obsolete.

On the other hand, they could concentrate on buying J-10s for the next ten years, and then switch to buying J-XXs. The J-10s would initially be deployed as "tip-of-spear" fighters, and then moved back to fill the role that the J-7s fill now as J-XXs enter service. They'd have one less type in production, and a more capable fleet overall.

... Ami.

You have ignored the possibility that China could sell those FC-1 second hand to anybody who wants to take them. As it stands, FC-1's foreign sell potential would be greatly diminished if China refused to buy them. So China should buy some, promote the heck out of it, generate a market for it, then when the time come for PLAAF to move up the ladder, sell the still very usable FC-1 to some third world country who can't afford anything else.

China has decided to sell great number of defence equipment to Kenya. The sell is said to be a big one. I wonder if FC-1 is included.

Quite possibly. And hasn't the production lines for the J-7 and J-8 been closed down now (or am I just hearing the wrong rumors again?)

It would not be obsolete at all. Sure it won't compare to the J-XX, but it will be a mature 4th generation platform by then, and could counter many of Taiwan's fighters as well as American F-16s which will still be in wide-spread use. Taiwan is not going to have F-35 or F-22 in 10 years, even America won't have F-35 in significant numbers in 10 years.

Also, you will need to pump out more than 600-700 J-XX to replace all the obsolete PLAAF squadrons. I doubt that will happen for a very long time. So I can see the FC-1 being useful during its life.

Deino posted this in the CDF. I think its an interesting development if the JF-17 is spotted in a 3rd Division airbase.

they might be flying it against J-10 to see how it would perform against the golden standard of PLAAF?

Agreed, ... but this picture apeared in a series of pictures of other "factory fresh" machines including the one in yellow primer with the engine test-run ... So I would tend to say these are older pictures of both types at the CAC home pre-delivery.
