this is a great pic, If FC-1 equipped with a delta wing like F-16XL ofcause is better, at least may loading much more weapons, and good for super cruise,I think.
but there are will be lots of improvements work on FC-1, that means will put lots of money on it.
but FC-1 is design for export espeacially for pakistan air force, FC-1 already desire for cheap style plane.this oppinion is from chinese air technology officer speaking.
China already has J-10 fighter, if FC-1 upgrade like this is not necessary for China,whatever for export or PLA needs.
US has so much money they can do a lot of research that China can not compair with it.

Letting the FC-1 have the delta wing shouldn't be much of a problem. In the future, all light combat aircrafts should have the delta wing if it helps to improve their performance. Look at the similarities between the FC-1, the F-16, and the F-16XL in these 3-view pictures.

When FC-1 was envisaged, they had the example of f-16XL infornt of them. They could have chosen delta configuartion from the very begining but they chose not to. Also, why didn't USAF go for this design if it was a better design?

Every design decision has cost/benefit ratio to it. The designers know it more than us forumers, and they decided not to use delta.

I don't think so.
J-11 is Chinese made Su-27, China bought produce right from Russia for 200, this amount suppose to be PLA needs. I read a book write from a military commentator Lin Chaung Shun mentioned that China have to paid 10 billion to buy this produce rirht.
China needs these long range fighters because China is a large country.
China offered J-10 to pakistan maybe possible.

One thing they could have adopted is Double Delta, like the J-7E. But they didn't.

What the FC-1 has in effect is what is called a "clipped" delta. The F-16 has that too. It does have a basic triangular form of a delta but lacks the sweep of true deltas. In my opinion, the FC-1 has a bit more of low speed turn performance in mind. The reshape of the LERX probably has the intention of raising the angle of attack limits. The intake change from variable to fixed DSI may improve engine response at lower speeds, helping in acceleration.

As regards crobato's assesment.
If the curent J-10 really is a transitioning to an even more advanced twin-engined, (thus heavier) version. There may then be space again for a (improved?) JF-17. Unless they keep building both versions of the J-10 (single and twin-engined).
The J-11B can be the medium to heavy fighter-bomber, as are the F-15C, -15E. While the twin-engined J-10 can then be the highly sophisticated and dedicated air-superiority fighter with perhaps a secondery, low destict attack role (F-22).
Now remains the light-medium sized fighter/attacker for the workhorse role (F-16/-35). The current J-10 is quiet well in that range, a bit below it actually. That means you already have all roles filled, if single- and twin-engined J-10s are produced. Wich I think shouldn't be that much a problem, the aircraft could be pretty common.
And for the standart workhorse role, if the current J-10 isn't continued and not bought it sufficient numbers (what I somehow doubt) the JF-17 would not offer enough (payload), IMO. It would not really be an improvement over J-7s to use less fighters for a given task.

With all those projects, producing still more JF-17 (adding to the already build export units), how would it effect production capacities?

To the circles and covering same areas with less fighter due to greater range, does also come that less fighters wich can carry more payload are easier to hide during a strike than an armada of many small aircraft perhaps supported by tankers.

My guess is that the single engined J-10s will still be produced out of sheer legacy momentum but the twin engined plane will gradually expand its presence. Note that by the next decade, some Su-27s are going to face retirement too, and towards the end of 2020, even the Su-30MKKs.

So if you imagine a mix that is shaped like a hamburger, hi as the top bun, the middle as the meat, as the lo as the bottom bun. The middle will grew as the top and the bottom grow thinner.

2010-2020 we will start seeing some serious retirements in the PLAAF. As much as half to two thirds of the J-8IIs and J-7s can be retired.

The thing one can ask if the JF-17 is a viable plane in the next decade. There are many answers to that, and its not clear cut. But it is at least important that that the plane keeps getting updated. Better engines and better radars and sensors to start with.

I made up a short list of what you can expect.

JF-17 vs. J-10

Range: I guess this one goes to the J-10

Payload: J-10 takes this by nearly double.

AAM payload: No surprise. Both are actually equal.

Bomb payload: J-10 wins here thanks to a few extra hardpoints in the fuselage.

Potential radar ranges: J-10's radome of 700mm gives only an incremental advantage over the FC-1's 600mm. Not much then.

Avionics: Equal. Both can avail of the stuff for each other.

Agility: I am in the opinion that the J-10 is significantly superior in the instantaneous turns, supersonic maneuverbility, vertical plane maneuvers due to the greater power and a bit better on the sustained turn rate, The lightness of the FC-1 may make it turn tighter on the horizontal plane. Both may have good AoA performance against potential opponents.

BVR: Surprisingly both are equal. The J-10's slightly larger radar maybe offset by the FC-1's smaller radar signature (IMO). The FC-1 can do wonders in a networked enviroment which equalizes radar performance for all.

Cost: FC-1 is cheaper initially.

Operating cost: About the same, IMO.

Looking at this, if you're talking about a cost effective BVR platform, the FC-1 fits the bill. A bit more range, payload, and WVR needed in requirements and you are looking at the J-10. This is not to say the FC-1 cannot handle non ACD opponents (Active Canard Delta) in WVR; it will and conventionally winged opponents is what it is far more likely to face. WVR is equally about pilot training, initiative, aggression, skill and not the least opportunity and luck. This is one area where sometimes being more maneuverable does not always guarantee a victory.

With all those projects, producing still more JF-17 (adding to the already build export units), how would it effect production capacities?

Its a problem if its competiting with the J-10 for space. But it looks like J-10 production is set in phases and blocks. After they produce one block, there is a gap or delay just as the next improved version is being readied. During those gaps, you can be producing FC-1s instead. You can alternate, produce the new version J-10s as the FC-1 batch finishes its run and the next version of the FC-1 is being developed and readied.

4) I think we might get a case with JF-17 like the J-7G scenario where the export version get SY-80 and domestic get KLJ-6E. So in this case, export JF-17 will get a 607 or 38 institute radar and domestic get lab 14. It's also dependent on the customer. If PAF wants a radar with better SAR capability or A2S capability, then a 607 radar may be a better fit.

I'm not sure if the F-7BG got SY-80 or any of the two at all. It is interesting to note that the J-7G doesn't use a black nose cone.

If the FC-1 to be presented to Pakistan has to suddenly change radar, why bother testing on the PT 04 and 06 at all. It sounds like one years of work is just thrown away overnight.

Which brings us to the equetion how China can deliver two planes to Pakistan without signing the reexport clause.

There is a change that plane red 2 may yet be another prototype to develop another radar, signifying a change in the radar supplier direction. Or simply, its just a new low visibility radome and the radar for all this time, is still the same. Would this grey radome happen also in later batches of the J-10 and in the J-11B as it goes into production?

Personally I kind of like the J-10 with a grey radome. On the other hand, putting a new grey radome on the J-11B would make it more difficult to tell the plane apart from the older J-11s.
