I think exported versions of J-10 would need the indigenous Ws-10A engine. It would be a shame if there is a limit on J-10 exports due to the lack of available AL-31s.

unfortunately in the near term J-10s have to primarily rely on the russian engines.China might continue importing AL-31FNs...

The primary problems that the Chinese are having with the ws-10A are the thrust generated by the engine and the engine life time. However I'd think that more research will be dedicated to this field since China couldn't develop her own 5th generation fighters without a decent engine. Imagine being able to produce your own stealth fighters but still relying on the Russians for engines!!!

Has anyone heard the news/rumor that two Chinese J-10s intercepted (purportedly locked on to) three Japanese F-2s while patrolling near the Diaoyu (Senkaku) Island? I saw an interview on the HongKong Phoenix Channel and numerous reports on Chinese websites but couldn't find it in Western Sources.

If you go to the bottom of this Wikipedia page, you'll find that this incident has been listed to have occured on Feb 20, 2009. And according to the Wikipedia, Janpanese govn't actually protested.

Interesting... exactly the same as what I've been seeing on Chinese BBS but wikipedia didn't give the source for the incident. Is the incident reported by major sources?

But I don't think WS-10A fitted on J-10 will be too distant away. This air show clearly show China is interested to export J-10 with full self make parts in mind. They weren't want customer to be worry about supply of engines, right?

If not, this Air show will not even exist in the first place cos it serves no purpose.

They are saying on Chinese forums that another J-10 crashed today, possibly due to engine problem again. The number been thrown around is that there have been at least 4 engine stalls so far.

Do you happen to have a link? I can't find any info on the crash in Western news and if this were true, it would mean that WS-10 is still not mature.

Wouldn't a crash more reflect failures with the AL-31FN?

That is not necessarily the case. I think the previous engine malfunctioning incident (when the Chinese pilot glided the J-10 to safety) was using the WS-10 engine instead of the AL-31FN. The WS-10 failure also resulted in a J-11 crash a while back.
