Iran begins an attack with dozens of drones and missiles on Israel

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority quoted Israeli officials as saying that Iran began its expected attack by launching dozens of drones towards Israel.

Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the army and air force are prepared for Iranian threats expected to arrive within hours, he said.

The spokesman added that the army will try to prevent the Iranian marches from reaching Israel and will deal with them as soon as they arrive, "but we warn that the defense will not be 100%."

ABC quoted a senior American official as saying that he believes Iran will launch between 400 and 500 drones and missiles at Israel.

This looks like a massive missile attack.

Meanwhile Jordan are saying they will try to shoot down the drones

Jordan's air defence ready to shoot down any Iranian aircraft that violate its airspace

Jordan's air defences were ready to intercept and shoot down any Iranian drones or aircraft that violate its airspace, two regional security sources said.
They said the army was also in a state of high alert and radar systems were monitoring any drone activity coming from the direction of Iraq and Syria.
Residents in several cities in the northern part of the country near Syria and central and southern areas heard heavy aerial activity. A security source said the country's air force was intensifying reconnaissance flights.

Hopefully it's just drones and this crazy ends and Israel don't respond.

It would be mighty embarrassing for Iran if their retaliation did nothing, in which case they would've been better of not to attack in the first place. I doubt this is the case, lets see.

On the other hand a larger escalation is also not in Iran's favor, they're walking a fine line on this one

It's too early to say at this point, but if the retaliation is limited to drone strikes, then this is intended to impart as few casualties as possible while offering a way for both countries to de-escalate.

A retaliatory strike intended to hurt the enemy would amount to something akin to firing multiple waves of ballistic and cruise missiles and timing to have them arrive on target simultaneously. Iran probably knows and expects to have most of the drones shot down en route. That allows the Ayatollahs to save face for its people while preventing a serious escalation with Israel that will put its leaders in a significantly more precarious situation. Israel probably expects this as well and sees this as a stepping stone for de-escalation.

Remember when Iran "retaliated" against an US airbase following the killing of Soleimaini? Same kind of flavor.

So Iran doing nothing= emboldens it's enemies from pushing its bottom line and also weakening the current regime internally from the persistent and lingering enemies (Shah remnants and others). Iran doing something = invites an increased attack not just from its omnipotent enemy within the region but also from the superpower America.

What is Iran to do? Stay impotent? Collapse the leadership and become just another Arab state under the leadership of the west?

They don't sound too confident, already looking for an exit it seems with the "this matter is concluded"

Reports of mass interceptor launches in Israel, doesn't really seem that Iran launched any ballistic missiles so far, only UAVs and cruise missiles.
