ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

There have been many accounts of Israel attacking SAA positions after Israel was attacked from Syria. You don't think those attacks were executed by SAA? Those attacks typically didn't cause casualties or even damage.

I haven't collected the items but every time Israel attacked on the Golan heights except when it attacked a Hezbollah leader it said it attacked SAA targets because it answered fire from Syria.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (9:50 A.M.) - The jihadist rebels of Fatah Halab are crumbling inside the eastern pocket of Aleppo tody, as they continue to lose district-after-district to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies.

Approximately two hours after announcing the capture of the Haydariyah Neighborhood, the Syrian Arab Army broke-through Fatah Halab's front-lines at Sakhour, resulting in the complete seizure of this strategic district and longtime jihadist stronghold.

Reports from Aleppo City indicate that several jihadist rebels from Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki have surrendered to the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units (YPG) near the Sheikh Maqsoud District; this was done so that they could avoid capture by the Syrian Arab Army.

As a result of today's advance, the Syrian Armed Forces have now secured 45 percent of the Aleppo pocket that was originally under the control of the jihadist rebels.

That wording is misleading. The point is that Israel would attack the Syrian government or its allies without identifying who actually perpetrated attacks or was the source of errant fire. Here is an example:

Four Israeli troops hurt in Golan blast, Israel blames Syria

A roadside bomb wounded four Israeli soldiers patrolling the occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday, and Israel retaliated with artillery fire on Syrian army positions, the army said.

It was not clear who had planted the bomb in an area where the Syrian military, Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas and Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad all have a presence.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed the strategic plateau in a move the world has not recognized.

Violence in Syria has spilled over the Golan frontline in the past but Tuesday's casualties were the worst Israel has suffered in there since the Syrian uprising began three years ago, army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said.

Noticing suspicious movement near the Golan separation fence, the soldiers left their patrol vehicle to inspect it on foot and were hit by an explosion, Lerner said. One was seriously hurt and the others had moderate to light injuries.

Israeli artillery shelled Syrian army positions on the far side of the fence in retaliation, Lerner said.

"We see the Syrian army as responsible, and that is indicated by our response to the attack," he said.

His language suggested Israel was blaming Damascus because it had formal authority over the Syrian-held side of the Golan.

Lerner declined to be drawn on whether Israel knew who specifically had planted the bomb. Two weeks ago, Israel said it foiled a similar attack when its forces shot two Hezbollah men near the Golan fence. Hezbollah has fighters in Syria helping Assad combat a rebellion led by Sunni Islamist insurgents.

In Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the Syrian-held side of the Golan was "filled" with al Qaeda-linked rebels and Hezbollah guerrillas who, while at each other's throats in Syria, shared deep enmity for the Jewish state.

"This presents a new challenge for the State of Israel," Netanyahu told his Likud faction.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of setting up positions on the other side of the boundary fence. On Friday, an explosive device was detonated against Israeli soldiers patrolling the nearby border with Lebanon, causing no injuries, the army said.

Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out an air strike on one of its bases on the Lebanon-Syria border last month and vowed to respond. Israel said it would hold the Beirut government responsible if Hezbollah attacked it from Lebanese territory.

You can be complicit with Israeli propaganda and denial about siding with Syrian anti-government forces against the Syrian government but fortunately the truth is out there:

This is a change of policy by Israel. Previously such IS attacks were a reason for Israel to attack SAA positions.

here's what MilitaryTimes had to say:
Syrian troops capture northern parts of rebel-held Aleppo
Syrian government forces and their allies captured another major eastern Aleppo neighborhood and several smaller areas Monday, putting much of the northern part of Aleppo's besieged rebel-held areas under government control for the first time in four years, state media reported.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the areas captured by Syrian government troops include 10 neighborhoods and over 3,000 buildings in the past few days. The ministry added in a statement that more than 100 rebels have laid down their arms and exited the Syrian city's eastern suburbs.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and former commercial center, has been contested since the summer of 2012 and a rebel defeat in the city would be a turning point in the five-year conflict. If Syrian forces capture all of east Aleppo, President Bashar Assad's government will be in control of the country's four largest cities as well as the coastal region.

The government's push, backed by thousands of Shiite militia fighters from Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, and under the cover of the Russian air force, has laid waste to Aleppo's eastern neighborhoods. Medical and food supplies have run short in recent weeks as Syrian warplanes pounded the besieged enclave, rendering all remaining functioning hospitals out of service.

Simultaneous advances by Syrian government and Kurdish-led forces on Sunday set off a tide of displacement inside the divided city, with thousands of residents evacuating their premises to safety (see photo above) in government and Kurdish-controlled areas of the city since Saturday.

Rebel defenses swiftly collapsed as government forces pushed into the Hanano district on Saturday, the first time they had pushed this far into eastern Aleppo since 2012.

With Monday's capture of Sakhour, the rebels are now left boxed in mostly in central and southeastern Aleppo, encircled by government territory on all sides.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian government forces have captured some 10 neighborhoods over the past few days, putting nearly 30 percent of Aleppo's formerly rebel-held neighborhoods under state control.

State TV said 3,000 people, half of them children, have fled over the past few hours. It showed men, women and children in green buses being taken to government-controlled areas.

"It is stinging cold, food is scarce and people are shaken in the streets," Mohammad Zein Khandaqani, a member of the Medical Council in Aleppo, told The Associated Press in a voice text message from east Aleppo.

He added that some residents are taking refuge in mosques while others moved to homes of displaced people in safer areas.

He said although thousands of people have fled to government or Kurdish-controlled areas in Aleppo, many stayed because they are wanted by the state.

Ahmad Araj, senior official with the Syrian National Democratic Coalition that consists of Arab and Kurdish groups, said 8,000 people have fled to the Kurdish-control Sheikh Maqsoud district so far, calling on international aid organizations to help those who are now displaced.

The Russian Defense Ministry also said Syrian government troops had pushed the rebels from Qadisia which it described as the "key neighborhood of eastern Aleppo."

My point is that attacks from Syria by often not identified actors were answered by Israel with attacks on the Syrian army. IS, Al Qaeda and others were present there for years. Hezbollah was there too but wouldn't have attacked Israeli targets because it was there to attack terrorists. This Israeli attack looks like a change of policy probably inspired to the developments in the Syrian "civil war".
