ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

These last days there are more accounts of Russian aircraft attacking in Syria, among them one of a Tu-160 dropping ten tons of bombs in Idlib province. I suppose winged Russian aircraft were taken out of Syria to reserve the supply line for the helicopters and ground forces. Marine Forum Daily News usually gives an account of ships shuttling between Russia and Syria but it has taken a holiday until May 19.
I suppose that if need be Russian Flankers and Su-24 might operate out of Iran.

my gosh, I'm reading the defenders have been split into three groups! I know it's hard to believe, am searching for details ...
first of all, while hoping it hadn't happened, I tried to find out how it allegedly had happened; using the old "peto lucem" map again:
WXSJ.jpg
  1. ISIL broke the perimeter in the south, took over "Tal Kroum" hill and took it toward "Panorama Base", but then toward the downtown; in addition
  2. ISIL breached the defenses in the parts of the downtown which I don't know yet from north-west; in addition
  3. ISIL breached the defenses in the parts of the downtown which I don't know yet from north-east
theoretically it's possible to divide the defenders this way, but I based it mostly on the source I don't know

Syrian forces retake Deir al-Zor hospital after 'major' Islamic State offensive
Syrian government forces retook a hospital in Deir al-Zor after Islamic State attacked it on Saturday following a dawn offensive by the militants on the besieged eastern Syrian city, a war monitor and state media said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors Syria's five-year-long war, said Islamic State had killed at least 35 members of the Syrian armed forces and detained some medical staff from the hospital.

The fighting in and around the hospital also killed at least 24 Islamic State fighters, the Observatory said.

Islamic State's Amaq news agency said its fighters staged a "major offensive" on the southwestern edge of Deir al-Zor on Saturday, storming the Assad Hospital and cutting the supply route between the a Syrian army base and the airport.

Islamic State controls most of Deir al-Zor province and has laid siege since March last year to the remaining government-held areas in the city of the same name, which is close to Syria's eastern border with Iraq.

Deir al-Zor province links Islamic State's de facto capital in the Syrian city of Raqqa with territory controlled by the militant group in neighboring Iraq.

Islamic State also said it had taken control of a check point, a fire station, university accommodation, grain silos and some territory near the al-Tayyam oil fields, in the vicinity of the state-held military airport on the city's southern edge.

Russia's RIA state news agency on Saturday reported a source within the airbase on the southern edge of the city as saying an Islamic State attack had been repelled.

The Observatory and Amaq said there were ongoing fierce clashes between government forces and Islamic State in the area of the attack.

Islamic State said it killed at least 80 government troops, took three prisoner and destroyed a number of armored vehicles.

The Syrian government and its Russian allies make regular aid drops into the encircled city and there are frequent air strikes on Islamic State targets in and around Deir al-Zor.

... Russian ... to reserve the supply line for the helicopters and ground forces. ...
this might be needed if the reports were true of four Russian helicopters destroyed by ISIL at "Tiyas Airbase" below (it's about ten miles from

I was about to dismiss it, but:
  1. I realized the main road to Homs had been cut around there earlier this week: https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/is...no-oped-no-policis.t6913/page-366#post-398297 and
  2. I looked up what Iranian press had to say:
Syrian Army, Russian Marines carried out anti-ISIS joint operation near T4 Military Airport

...
... now I read in several sources apparently "just" somebody messed up at that Airbase: reportedly Russian helicopters destroyed, but by the explosion(s) of friendly ammo trucks, not by ISIL

EDIT
by the way I've noticed ISIL is attacking Ramadi again, but I don't have time for Iraq, so just one example: relatively reliable source says ISIL was kept out of some bridge into the town:
