I'm starting to wonder when body armor becomes irrelevant once more, as the reason for it's widespread adoption again was due to most threats being small arms and fragments from enemies who's most heavy weapon will likely be an HMG or RPG here and there, but with a near peer opponent with more access to vehicles and the big weapons and that armor won't protect you from being liquified by HE.
Body armor does protection against shrapnel and in a degree shock waves thus effectively decrease kill radius of explosive like artillery shell and grenade on your soldiers. Remember that time in south sudan a mortar shell penetrate an APC and detonated right between crews yet most of them only suffer injury on legs when vital organs are protected by heavy body armor.

The barrel roll thing is just to show on TV when perform it on a level ground. In reality, when you are running in your highest speed from one cover to another(or trench, shell crater, etc), this is the fastest way to rush into the cover and do a barrel roll and resume shooting position. Other would be much slower.
I'm sorry, as someone who's served as an 11A for 6 years of active duty, shooting while running is VERY rare (more important for SWAT style units and room clearing) and the barrel roll is just useless and dumb.

Fighting is not as high paced as you guys think and it's a big issue I don't think China has recognized yet. They keep training like they are going to be ninjas with rifles when strategy, tactics and problem solving are much more key.

Your second point was answered already on the top.

What did the PLA hold in their satchels during the Sino Vietnamese war?
Ammunition, equipment, food, personal items, sleeping, eating and camping equipment. I don't think these sort of things change through time. Even Ancient soldiers would've carried the same sort of stuff. Arrows instead of bullets, Swords and spears instead of rifles, wooden sticks instead of carbon fibre tent poles.

As far as i know, we only fire a few shots in the general direction just to keep the enemies heads down.

No one will run with eye focus on the boresight. That makes it easier to trip and fall.

There are many aspects of pLA infantry that needs to be more tactically mindful.

Minor details like helmets and some equipments are painted with grossy colour that reflect off the sun light . Colourful patches on combat uniform, Colour scheme of the marines, conducting assault with red flag bearers etc.

Another big offender is the helmet that pops smoke when you kill someone which is actually a recent addition. In the battlefield, you don't really see clearly if you've killed someone. You don't know if he's really hit and falling over or just ducking for cover. There's no blood like Quinten Tarantino movies.

I'm hoping training is going to be put under the microscope in the future. China is really behind in this and it's something that takes time to develop.
