For the DARIN-3 upgrade programme (which was approved in 2008), an initial 58 single-seat Jaguar IS aircraft will be subjected to a ‘deep upgrade’ by HALBIT Avionics along with HAL’s Mission & Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC), Overhaul Division, and the IAF’s Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and Software Development Institute (SDI). The first prototype of the DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS took to the skies on November 28, 2012. Each DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS will be fitted between 2014 and 2017 with ELTA-supplied EL/M-2032 multi-mode pulse-Doppler radar, HAL-Edgewood’s OSAMC core avionics computer, Elbit Systems’ Targo HMDS, EL/M-8022 jammer, BDL-built CMDS, SaabTech’s RWRs and LWRs, EADS/Cassidian’s MILDS-F MAWS, and Raytheon-supplied munitions control unit (MCU) for making the aircraft’s weapons management system compatible with the 15 different types of munitions that have been specified by the IAF. Following this, the IAF’s seven DARIN 1-standard Jaguar IMs too will be retrofitted with DARIN 3-standard avionics.

Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir: Indian and Chinese military commanders today met at one of the highest airstrips in the world, Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) in Ladakh, making it the fifth border meeting point between the two sides.

"Border meetings between two militaries are critical .They are used to resolve local issues like patrols inadvertently crossing over and prevents flare-ups," a senior officer told NDTV.

DBO was the site of three week long stand-off between the two militaries in 2013 when the Chinese had objected to fortification along the Indian side in Chumur. Located in Northern Ladakh at altitude of 16,000 feet ,DBO overlooks the Karakoram Pass - an ancient trade route between Leh and China's Xinjiang province.

The meeting point at DBO is the second border meeting point to be activated in the last one year. This May, a border meeting point was opened at Kibithoo in Anjaw District, located in the extreme east of Arunachal Pradesh. Connected by hotline, the Indian and Chinese military officials had their first meeting which was conducted around the time Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China between May 14 and May 16 this year.

Prior to these two new border meeting points, the Indian and Chinese had only three designated border meetings points to cater 3,488 Km of disputed border. These were at the Spanngur Gap at Chusul in eastern Ladakh, Bum-La near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and Nathu-La in north-eastern Sikkim.

Increasing the border meeting points is part of the new government initiative to lessen India- China border tensions. More military to military contact to sort out local issues is critical to this end. It is also part of PM Modi's overall strategy to better ties with China.

The Indian military delegation in DBO was led by Colonel BS Uppal and the Chinese delegation was led by Colonel Song Zhoanli. The meeting also marked the People's Liberation Army (PLA) day.

The French government has rejected Indian negotiators' demand for a 50 per cent offset clause citing sharp cost escalation but offered to participate in 'Make in India' projects to carry forward the talks for 36 Rafale fighter jets that have hit turbulence.

Defence sources said India's insistence on the offset clause, tweaking of weaponary technology and plans to set up two bases for Rafale fighter jets would lead to cost escalation.

Offset policy was first introduced as part of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), 2005, under which a foreign company has to invest back a portion of the deal into India.

"The 50 per cent offset clause was part of the original tender that was floated for 126 fighter jets. The French President and Indian Prime Minister have now decided to go in for a direct purchase of 36 Rafale jets. So, how can 50 per cent offset clause be asked when the French are offering the fighters at the same rate at which its Air Force is buying," defence sources said.

They added the French have instead offered to undertake ?Make in India? initiatives. "The French can look at the option for making Falcon business jets in India or even the Rafales for future besides other projects," the sources said, adding the French government has made it clear that their companies would like to be part of 'Make in India' initiative.

The sources said the offset clause will simply drive up the cost of each aircraft.

It is not just the offset clause that the French are worried about. Indian Air Force wants to integrate a Israeli helmet mounted display with the Rafale fighter jets besides tweaking the weaponry technology so that the aircraft can fire a missile other than what the Rafales carry.
The missile, sources said is of American make.
"The changes asked for are not like changing tyres in cars. It takes time, effort and money, all of which will again drive up the cost," the sources said.

when did astra become an american missile,?
if anything it has a russian seeker .
idiot media.

I still like the idea of an Indian F-16IN.

Includes offsets. Would be built in India. Has all of those great upgrades. Would be a GREAT solution for India in terms of replacing all of those legacy aircraft.

Would also way out perform the LCS.

Now...India does need to get its indigenous industry going...but these aircraft would give them the time to do that and bring out the LCA II later.

Time will tell.

Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RAC MiG) delivered more than ten upgrade kits for MiG-29 fighters to India, TASS reports with reference to the RAC MiG CEO Sergey Korotkov. “RAC MiG has already delivered over 10 upgrade kits and five of them has already been used by HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) to upgrade the aircraft. Two out of five upgraded fighters are already performing flights. Three more jets are being prepared for the flight tests,” Korotkov said.

A total of 63 jets of the type should be upgraded to MiG-29UPG version. It was reported earlier that four aircraft would be upgraded this year. Earlier India took delivery of six jets upgraded by the RAC MiG.

As for deliveries of MiG-29K carrier-based fighters to Indian navy, the corporation is going to deliver six jets of the type this year and six more – in 2016. “These deliveries will have the contract fulfilled,” Korotkov explained.
