I may have been exposed to indian propaganda but wasn't the farm law supposed to be one of those "unpopular but good laws"?

If anything this will keep india down as they fail to modernise the farming sector. India in fact has better agriculture land than even China but output has been kept down due to the large numbers of low tech farmers

You aren't wrong. The law was mostly good, with the "bad" part giving more money and control to the rich.

However, it was good for the overall development of India. Which is why it is good that it is now repealed lol

The more years the young Indians spend om agriculture, the more their demographic dividends declines in quantity (less years to utilize), and in quality (children will grow up, work, live, in an agricultural environment).

All in all, positive news for China

Farm laws weren't aimed at modernization. For that there are already a ton of different schemes in place.

Farm laws were aimed at Corporatization of Agriculture similar to America. Now is it necessarily a bad thing? Not exactly but its more complex than it looks.

To understand Farm laws you need to first understand the farming system in India.

As of now if you want to procure Agriculture produce you need to approach the Local Mandi ( Govt regulated Marketplace run by powerful middlemen) . You cant just directly approach the farmer. This was basically put in place to prevent exploitation of farmers as most are illiterate. Farmers were selling their produce at Govt Mandis & were assured of proper prices ( also called Minimum Support price MSP). This how they made their living

Farmers => Mandi => Wholesalers => Retailers => Consumers

This was the system before the laws.

Now this system worked very well for some regions (Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, West UP) while it flopped in rest of India. The rest of India Mandi system was corrupt due to slimy middlemen and failed procurement and farmers suffered.

So to reform this system came the Farm laws which effectively ended the dominance of Mandis and middlemen and aimed at directly connecting Farmers with Private players . It also introduced land leasing, contract farming. So on paper it was a much needed reform

But as we know the regions benefitting from this ( Punjab, Haryana) would've suffered as the current system worked very well for them. Hence if you notice these protests only took place in North India while rest of India didn't care as the current system wasn't working for them and a reform wouldn't have been bad.

But because of Modis bonhomie with Private players (Adani, Ambani) farmers were apprehensive of their land getting taken over by Corporates and Govt abandoning farmers. Hence many farmers freaked out over this. And tbf i dont blame them. If it was upto Modi he would sell the entire country to his favorite Billionaire Buddies.

Now because major elections in UP , Punjab are approaching Govt knew they would lose badly here due to these farm protests and hence they had to withdraw the laws.

But i have no doubt in my mind that after elections Modi will reintroduce these laws as the Private sector demands it.

Why not leave "as is" where the current system is working and introduce the new system in the other regions? India boasts about being the "largest democracy", then do it the democratic way - let farmers in each state vote for one of the two systems.

P. S. Yeah, I know that "democracy" is actually corporatocracy and that's why they won't do the things I've described above.
