Tesla Faces Bumpier Ride Breaking Into India After China Success

  • Musk indicated Tesla in talks over showrooms, maybe a factory
  • But even its most affordable model is beyond bulk of Indians

I have this feeling they will have to ship Shanghai-built Teslas even though they want to build a factory there. Also the middle class in India is much smaller.

I wonder what's the infrastructure like there to support Chinese EVs? Ideally you want Chinese EVs conquering India like Chinese phones did. Xpeng, BYD. Then Indians can complain about China all they like in their Chinese cars typing away on Chinese phones.

@Crang

Actually their middle class that really fit the western definition (on the lower side) totaled 30 million and I'm being generous, and most of their income came from overseas remittances. It was these overseas worker that help India stay afloat not The industrialist who had taken loans from public banks and never intended to pay it back.

Tesla is doing this for PR purposes. Indians cant afford premium vehicles . Even the cheapest Tesla would cost around 35 lac INR ($45k USD) in a country of Per capita income $1500.
To give you an idea, BMW sales in China are 73x that of India .

Also Indian expenditure is guided by their culture. The Indian middle class spends their life savings on dowry and housing . They don't care about luxury but rather convenience and return on investment. (Thats why Chinese phones became successful, so much for so less).
India will never be a market for high end products.

Hence i believe once battery technology matures and EV becomes affordable for Indians (near the $10k range), China will dominate the market via economies of scale. (Cheaper EVs will also spur private investment in EV infra)

Indians apart from cost only look for 3 things in a car- Mileage, looks and Service.

@Kaeshmiri ,

I don't want to sound arrogant, but is it a good marketing ploy to advertise your luxury product in the pothole ridden street? what kind of market are you aiming at? It's a woke culture that Tesla is playing and also a kind of stock manipulation knowing that it need to show something for investors and see its stock rise.

Its for their shareholders. Just to tell them that Tesla is expanding and entering more car markets. Its also aimed at extracting massive subsidies out of Indian authorities. Other than that Tesla isn't interested in mfg cars in India yet.

Only 5-10%? They should pull a trump and do 30%. Or be more trump than trump and make it 300%. It will do the world a favor and remove all Indian trolls from the internet and India revert back to the bronze age.
This seems reasonable? China has similar duties for most products.
