Seems like a coordinated series of attacks at about 10 sites in Mumbai. So far, over 100 people are dead. To quote Tom Clancy's description of 911, this is a "brilliant operation" -- well-organized and ruthlessly executed.

CNN.com's report is as follows:

The morning after teams of gunmen carried out a brazen series of attacks across southern Mumbai -- killing scores of people and taking hostages in multiple locations -- the situation remained chaotic.

The death toll from the series of coordinated attacks was at 101 by midday Thursday authorities said. The number of people wounded in the attacks have also been raised to 314, said Pradeep Indulkar, deputy secretary for Maharashtra, the state where Mumbai is located.

At least six foreigners were killed in the series of attacks across southern Mumbai late Wednesday and early Thursday, according to a state official.

A British citizen and another from Australia were among the dead, said Pradeep Indulkar, deputy secretary for Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is located. A Japanese businessman was also killed, the country's foreign ministry confirmed.

The nationalities of the other foreigners killed were not yet available.

In addition, at least nine gunmen were killed in gunfire exchange with police. Seven British citizens were wounded in the attacks, as were two Australians, officials from the two countries said.

Also among the victims was Hemant Karkare, the chief of the Mumbai police's anti-terror squad was among those killed, and as many as 11 police officers.

A hostage standoff continued at the Oberoi Hotel, where about 100 members of a specialized unit of the Indian police undertook an operation to rescue four to five foreigners hostages on the 19th floor.

Most of hostages and guests at the Taj Mahal Hotel, located a few blocks away, were freed after a series of gunshots rang through the air, police said.

By the way, anyone else a bit surprised to see Indian police carrying WW2-era Lee-Enfield rifles?
the american army still uses the cold war m-14 rifles, nothing out of the ordinary. its still an effective rifle so why bother, acquiring a new rifle when the old one is just as good as the new ones.

They're not WWII era Lee-Enfields but Sino-Indian War era Lee-Enfield rifles. They are Ishapore 2A1 rifles chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO round to be exact.

Thank you Popeye. This is indeed a sad event.

And about the Lee-Enfield, I just thought a un-scoped single-shot rifle with a small magazine is not what one wants to take into a urban CQB environment in this time and age.

I personally do not think any ordinary police force in big nation like India or China should be equipped with the most up to dated modern rifle, it would be very costly to produce and maintain them since Nations like China or India has a very large police force.
Many Chinese police or even armed police units still uses type-56 which is like an ak-47. And we all know how old the old and reliable Aks are :)

Apparently some of the attackers at least entered the city by inflatiable boat, coming up from a public docking area or somesuch water front area, and then walking to their targets with weapons hidden in duffle bags. That points to foreign involvement; they had to have a mothership. According to some news reports the Indian Navy has tracked and/or boarded a commerical vessel they believe was the mothership.
