This is a very well organized terrorist group that sprung out of Afghanistan during the Taliban era. An attack of this sophistication is something that is not out of the ordinary for this group.

), one terrorist was caught alive (injured). He said that they were a group of ten, they have been trained for one year in Pakistan. During the attack action each of them was equipped with an AK-47 with 6 magazines, a pistol and 6~7 grenades. They said that the Indian police are no match to them!

The claim seemed to be too proud of themselves, but with only 10 members, they could last 60 hours and killed nearly 200 and wounded another 300. You really can't look down on their ability.

I recall a robbery attack opposite of my house back to 1990. When 3 robbers equipped with 1 AK-47 and a single magazine (the house owner claimed the 3 gangsters were robbers, but rumors suggested that they might have some kinds of relation with the house owner) broke into a house and were locked inside that house. Police with two APC attacked the house with machine guns (on the APC), AK-47 and grenades. But was only able to take out the robbers after 6 hours of heavy fighting.

So, are police generally inferior to terrorist? How do you give credit to the Indian police on their ability on fighting against the terrorist this time?

I don't believe that. 10 sites were attacked I believe. One of them is not known for sure to be related to the terrorists, so 9 at least. And they want us to believe that 10 people did that? I don't believe it for a second. I think that some of them escaped in the confusion. Perhaps the police want to cover up their ineptitude and they only have 9 bodies and 1 captured terrorist, so they said that there were only 10. Perhaps the captured one is trying to protect his comrades. Whatever the case is it seems likely to me that there were more than 10 attackers.

it seemed like these guys have considerate training, to the level they're operating semi-experienced/professionally
i wont be surprised if they're operating like fire teams. it even seemed like they are

I've been living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia since 1985. Cambodia signed the Paris Agreement in 1989 and started to transform since then. It changed its name from The People's Republic of Cambodia to The State of Cambodia, and currently it's called The Kingdom of Cambodia.

What I mentioned in the above post was a robbery case happened just opposite my house in 1990. I heard about the case while I was still at school. I witness the case from the first shot until the end. I can be more detail about the case. There were two sources about the case -- the newspaper and the rumor.

The news said 3 robbers broke into a house while there was a mother and two children in the house. The house owner ran a business of ruby and sapphire which were produced from Pai Lin, a northwest region under control of the Khmer Rouge. When two robbers went deep into the house, the mother kicked the other robber at his penis and escaped from the house with the two children and locked the door from outside and called the police.

The rumor said the 3 robbers actually were two Vietnamese soldiers and one Cambodian soldier (by that time the Vietnamese army had not withdrawn from Cambodia yet). These were the very skillful and experienced soldiers, this was proven true during the fight with the police. They had business link with the house owner, they sold ruby and sapphire to the house owner, and they were coming to collect their money. The house owner treated them with food and beer. When all of them got drunk she took an excuse and went out with her children. She locked the door from outside and called the police.

When the police came they didn't take the robbers serious, they thought they could take out the robbers with just a finger. But it proved them wrong, the 3 robbers with only one AK-47 and 30 rounds were much stronger than they thought. After a moment of fighting, the police started to summon the robbers to surrender. They spoke Vietnamese for that. Only a fool would agree to surrender at that time. The fight continued. They broke the door with an armored fighting vehicle. They fired single shot continuously with AK-47 into the house. Once a while they also threw some grenade into the house. It worth to mention that the house was a flat house of 4m x 16m with two floors and a sub-floor on each floor. So, the robbers could run up and down to avoid the bullets. The police could only take the robbers out at about 6pm on that day which was 6 hours after the start of the fighting. The robbers ran out of their munitions. When the police got them, some of them were still alive, but they were thrown down from the second floor and dead.

It's true that both police and soldier here use AK-47 as their main weapon. They have very few M16-A1 to equip the military police only. However, after years, they don't have new M16, so the MP is currently also equipped with AK-47. So, do you think that the police were too incapable in dealing with robbers?

Cambodian special forces also use the Chinese Type 97 now but it will probably be a long time before this trickles down and the police recieve anything this new, especially with allegations of corruption going around. My dad is from Siem Reap province and from the recent photos he has shown me the Cambodian soldiers placed at Preah Vihear in general seemed to be equipped with some very old equipment like the RPG-2.

Did you mean your dad has just come back from Siem Reap or he lives there? The special force are equipped with the Chinese Type 97, perhaps this is the first foreign force who formally use Type 97. But this force is usually not shown to the public. You can hardly see a special force member on the street. May be their disipline is better and stricker. While you see other arm force are heavily armed themselves in the public. A special force only come out with a biyonet or without any weapon.

For the soldiers in Preah Vihear, you should remember that these are the former Khmer Rouge soldier who has not change their equipment for quite long time or the government just don't bother to change their equipment, but they are the force who really fight.

He comes from a small village outside of Siem Reap, we Cambodians aren't really city folk (anymore at least). The 911 Special Forces are of course pretty reclusive, the last time they were seen really was during that rescue/recovery mission of that airliner a year or so ago.

Yeah, they're almost all ex-Khmer Rouge in there, I guess I shouldn't be surprised they'd be the LAST to recieve any new equipment. I read a funny article awhile back during the height of the Preah Vihar temple Crisis where an ex-Khmer Rouge ground commander was now working under the Army officer he had been fighting for years!
