Singapore can deny access to its stock exchanges, couldn't it? Any why rely on foreign stock exchanges (Singapore isn't exactly a Beijing-friendly country either) when you can list on your own?

and why would Singapore want to do that? They are not morons like HKers who think too highly of themselves to accept mainlanders money

Yeah, I know! Nothing there worse than what I see in Hong Kong. These terrorists deserve this and much more.

majority of the people KILLED or forced into suicides by the Red Guards are average folks who had nothing to do with politics! Cultural Revolution was anarchy in large scale.

Shanghai is over 1000 km from Hong Kong. Shanghai's stock market is already larger than Hong Kong's (

in market cap versus $3.8 trillion USD).

Hong Kong is not quite irrelevant but it is rapidly growing more and more so.

For the same reason that everyone wants a fight in their family to end well.

Like I said, HK's economic importance is diminishing but as of today it is still significant in China's economic growth. Beijing is treading lightly and it needs to do so.

I want to point out that the pro-establishment got 40.17% of the votes in 2016 Hong Kong legislative election and the anti-establishment got 55.02% of the votes. This 2019 local election just reaffirmed the fact 60% of the Hong Kong people support the anti-establishment and there is no silent majority.

The pro-establishment parties and the HK government want to capitulate but the central government needs to ask themselves is appeasement worth it. Granting amnesty and throwing the HK police under the bus would be disaster.

Yes, this much has been made clear, and now we are no longer operating under illusions.

I expect to see a slew of new economic policies from Beijing designed to make it harder to invest in HK and easier to invest in Mainland cities, and the first casualty will be real estate.

Those HKers who have the option would be wise to sell now and move to Mainland.

Yes that's true, but still a worthy price to pay to bring Hong Kong in line. I know exactly what happened in CR, ok? LOL You talk to your parents and I talked to mine; I have no idea why you'd think I know less than you.

US can send its entire naval fleet to blockade China tomorrow. So what’s your point? Again, why would Singapore deny mainlanders’ money?

If the US could forcibly de-list Chinese IPOs from its stock exchanges why is it not a possibility that Singapore, a country firmly in the Western bloc, could do so later?

The US may not send its naval fleet at all, but China still prepares for this possibility. The analogy is the same here.
