Don't you just love this. Marco Rubio, the man who is as bad as Ted Cruz. Didn't even bothered to fact check before posting in his tweeter feed. I guess why change a habit of a lifetime.

Here's what she was done for:

US #SenatorRubio did not check the basic facts. #BaoChoy was not convicted for reporting. She was charged and convicted on two counts of knowingly making a false statement to the Government under the Road Traffic Ordinance, and fined HK$6,000 (approx US$750).

Access to the Transport Department database is available to all, including journalists, in Hong Kong, but the iInformation requested has to be used in reports related to traffic and transport matters.

Bao Choy made a false statement and did so knowingly. Is she above the law? If a journalist could lie when making a simple request for information, how much credibility is there in her reports?

“How could such an anti-China politician as Paul Harris who has close connections with foreign countries fulfil the principles of safeguarding Hong Kong’s rule of law and the Basic Law and support the one country, two systems principle as previously stated by the Bar Association?” a spokesman for Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong said on Sunday.
The strongly worded statement targeted Harris’ latest remarks defending the right to peaceful protests after 10 people, including newspaper mogul Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, were convicted for their roles in illegal assemblies on August 18 and 31 in 2019.
Yeah not a good start when you support Jimmy Lai Chee-ying. But lets wait, maybe this is an overreaction?

The spokesman noted that the Bar Association was not only a professional body but also held statutory powers. These include the issuance of annual practising certificates to barristers and sitting on a committee that recommends judicial appointments. Given such statutory powers, its chairman should therefore uphold the principle of “patriots ruling Hong Kong”, the spokesman said.
Agreed, as long as you hold such powers, you also have basic responsibilities

The liaison office attack was prompted by an interview Harris gave to news website Stand News last week when he had noted the convictions over the August 18 and 31 protests marked the first time a Hong Kong court had imposed prison terms for illegal assembly, arguing that peaceful demonstrations were a legal and valuable channel for people to express their emotions and grievances. Otherwise, they could turn to more destructive action, he warned.
Oh nice, what is that? Is that a threat what I am seeing here?

The liaison office spokesman accused Harris of ignoring the repeated violence during large-scale protests over the now-withdrawn extradition bill. Harris used the phrase “peaceful demonstrations” to “conceal and whitewash their illegal nature, openly excuse the offenders, unreasonably accuse the court” and attacked the Hong Kong government and police for trying to impose law and order, he said.
This is the key point, and the liason office spokesman is correct on this IMO. Either this guy was intentionally spreading misinformation/threats or he was stupid enough that it was just a mistake, in which case he isnt qualified to be the president of the Bar Association

Sunday’s statement was not the first the liaison office had issued against Harris, a long-time human rights barrister who began practising in the city in 1993.
Oops. Smells like a traitor to me? Although human rights are a noble thing to protect as a lawyer, I have to say that the past years have opened my eyes that this thing in HK is mostly funded by foreign organizations for their own nefarious reasons....

Harris said he wanted to explore the possibility of “getting the Hong Kong government to agree to some modifications” to the Beijing-imposed national security law.
Oops x2. So he didn't like the national security law? What qualifications does he have to "insist" on changes? I can assure you that the Central Gov had its own *obvious* reasons for doing this law, not sure why that guy thinks he knows better than them. Maybe he can try to join the CPC and ask them?...

“We ask that the Bar Association not to walk farther and farther down the road of politicisation. Otherwise, it will only step into an abyss it cannot get out of.”
Seems like the liason office wont tolerate another Oops x3 from him. Maybe he will get investigated

The statement also highlighted Harris’ membership of Britain’s Liberal Democrats part
Yes thats bad. Traitor?

and his role in founding Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor which, according to a media expose, received donations from the National Endowment for Democracy, an entity funded by the United States government.
Oops x3. Wow thats a big bomb right here, definetely a traitor then

In a reply to the Post, Harris made it clear he was “absolutely not an anti-China politician"
Yep, thats what all criminals and traitors say everytime...

"I served as an unpaid volunteer local councillor when I lived in Oxford and was at that time a member of the Liberal Democrats party from which I have since resigned. Since I stopped being a councillor I have not been involved in politics either in the United Kingdom or in Hong Kong.”
So founding the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor which also got donations from the infamous NED based in the US => "I have not been involved in politics"? Cool story bro

Executive Council member Ronny Tong Ka-wah, the Bar Association’s chairman from 1999 to 2001, said although he did not support Harris as chief, he also hoped the “patriots ruling Hong Kong” principle would not be applied to the body.
Lmao what???

Xia did not specify the statutory bodies. But in Sunday’s statement, the liaison office said the “patriots governing Hong Kong” principle should also apply to the chairman of the Bar Association because the body had a number of statutory powers.
Well the case seems clear cut to me. When is the guy going to resign and when is he going to get investigated for breaking the national security law?

Well in Rubio's defense, it's not like Rubio give a fuck about facts.

So perhaps foreign passports are ok for HK legislators/their family members, provided they're pro-CCP? Perhaps there should be some sort of qualifying test that says it's ok to have a bolt-hole from HK under some conditions.

Actually it is very normal for HK people to have multiple passports. Even mid-income people have multiple passports. I myself who is in a working class also has two passports. The primary reason is because of difficulty owning a house here or the houses are just too small here in HK for the same price in different country. This is a major issue that the HK government has done too little to solve. So better spread your eggs in different baskets. Almost all business people here has that kind of arrangement. They just want to make money here. There will be no difference with the officials as long as they toe in the line for the central government.
