@dankris

Great catch! I never knew that Hong Kong democracy is so young and if Hong Kong ever return to being a British colony its citizen will actually lose their right to vote. There goes another argument for returning to British rule and the romanticism of that era in Hong Kong history. I guess if Hong kongese can get used to living under a governor appointed by the British Crown, they can get used to living under a governor appointed by Beijing.

Yes, an inconvient truth. The Great British empire was so confident in itself, it wouldn't even offered their subjects in Hong Kong the same democratic rights they have been telling the world everyone should have.

The democracy Hong Kong enjoys now is ALL down to China, ironic really!

Can anyone tell me what it is about Korea that Joshua is upset with..thanks?

Mr. T is incarnation of FuManChu a well known anti-China and pro-Japan, pro-Taiwan member. Both of them claimed to be resided in the UK. FuManChu got into many flame war with many members, but was very good at getting others banned. That's why it is unwise to engage in debate with him.

FuManChu claimed to be a Japanese at first but was later discovered to be a Taiwanese that pretends to be Japanese and probably reside in UK and has some friends that are from HK.

Wow. I remember him. Then I look back on these threads and there he is. He started the UK military news thread all the way back in 2006. He must be one of the original ones here.

I mean even back in 2006. Anyone would name themself Fumanchu and with a avata of a 19th century stereotype chinaman has, either absolutely clueless on how offensive and insensitive that is. Or it just a plain old fashion racist bigot!

Either way it is ignorant or deliberate. Wait that sound just like........

It's smoke and mirrors again. Or Mr T lack comprehension skills, or worse it is deliberately misleading.

You see. The survey of the Consrvatives are on the proposed extension of stay proposed by Boris. So the rank and file will support Boris up to the hilt..... providing they haven't lost much in return. ie; full citizenship to the "yellow peril"!

Now before anyone complaints, I'm deliberately using that phrase (I could USA alot worse) to highlight the type people that I have personally encountered in the Conservative clubs just to illustrate the racist xenophobic people that exist in the Conservative party.

If the survey ask do they support granting of full citizenship. (Highly unlikely because Boris wouldn't dare to propose it the first place) the result would be turned upside down it's head.

By showing a survey that asked a question on the proposed extension to back up his argument that the Tories are in unity to suppport mass permanent immigration, and permanent citizenship with full rights and benefits is very underhanded of him.

The current Cabinet headed by Boris Johnson still believes the UK will get a Brexit sweetheart trade deal where the UK gets the benefits of being a member whilst having none of the obligations.

Even before the pandemic, the UK was struggling to make any headway at all.
After all, the EU has 5x the population and economic heft.

So this is the government (and the mentality) which is trying to threaten China over Hong Kong.

It's indicative of delusional thinking at the top of the Conservative Party, about the UK's position in the world.
And in just 3 weeks time, the Conservative Party is going to have to ask the EU for an extension to avoid the UK crashing out with a Hard Brexit.

Word is Trump wanted paratroopers to deal with protestors. I wonder when the media takes responsibility that they want to make real life like a movie. The more they're shocked when reality isn't like a movie. They contribute to why someone like Trump exists.

Could possibly explain why he keeps referring to Hong Kong People as Hongkongese, similar to Taiwanese.

I was wondering if he purposely used the term in derogatory manner as in Pekingese lapdog.

We know colonialist used to associate orientals with dogs.

I wonder how would someone feel to be called Londonese or New Yorkerese?

Great interview with the taxi driver that was dragged out and beaten to a pulp. (Warning, also contain video of the man set on fire). It is in Cantonese and Mandarin only.

Here's a brief translation.

The taxi driver said;

He never intended to ran the protestors over, if he did, why should I stopped? He goes on to say, the thugs was smashing his windscreen up whilst he stopped. One open the passenger door and try to grab his wheel and him out. While another one on the right grabbed his wheel and turned it . He was try to fight them off. And in doing so floored the gas peddle and the car went forward in a circular motion because the thug in the right had turned the wheel to the left.

When he was dragged out, he thought that would be the end. Anywhere when he got to the hospital, the nurses were extremely unpleasant to him. And he was discharged after 4 days with pain killers.

When he recovered, and went back to work. He was getting a lot of hate texts from the thugs as he did not change his telephone number because alot of his loyal clients still uses his services. He went to celebrate national day with the rest of the taxi crew. And said why shouldn't I, as I'm a CHINESE HONG KONG NATIONAL. Bravo!

Already on social media, people are calling Boris to make good on his promise. It's a win for China, it's a win for Hong Kong. It's a big loss for the UK!

Let me elaborate, in the short term, the UK thought they got a win diplomatically, by offering this it showed the world they care, blah blah blah. It made China look bad for the "draconian" national security" bill forced on Hong Kong and "breaking" of promised.

But actually in the long run it's a big loss. UK has to make good on the promised. Especially if as "implied" permanent residency, otherwise it is not even viable as an offered to extend stay of further 6 months.

It'll caused increased tension on race relationship that's already at breaking point since Brexit. It'll end up with a majority of low skill low education migrants. (All the highly educated and skilled pool, or people with money already have foreign passport way before handover as an insurance). Schools and other social services will be overwhelmed.

Meanwhile China and Hong Kong will got rid of this people for good!

Just love this, councillor Ho (the one that the Anglia university stripped of his honorary phd) present Hong Kong's representation on the current demonstration (human rights) to the USA consulate general. Lol

I think you're exaggerating the current state of race relations as it did calm down in the aftermath of the Soft Brexit in February.

But given that we're likely to see unemployment potentially reach 30% in the coming months, yes, adding large number of visible immigrants is going to increase tensions.

Particularly since a Hard Exit from the European Union trade bloc looms in December 2020.

Lam was said to have hinted that a new institution that the law would require the city to set up would likely fall under the charge of the police force

I think re-establishing Special Branch under the control of the Hong Kong Police Force will be the end result.

So the first question would be, what is Special Branch?

1. Special Branch was used to conduct political policing when the last British Governor was in charge of Hong Kong.
2. Special Branch still exists in the UK, and is used for anti-terror operations.

So the UK continuing criticism would open up the British Government to charges of hypocrisy.
