Referring to the economic aspects of the article. The chinese need to build a new highway or certainly widen the karokurom highway, If china does try improve transportation links in the form of building roads or even railways it will be a interesting challenge to traverse the near impreccable peaks of northern pakistan. i assume they have to improve links if to make the region the crossroad for imports and exports for the sorrounding region. When do you members think the building of new transportation links directly between china and pakistan will commence?

I think China will use Gwador only as an economical hub and pumping station for its oil liners . Chinese navy in Gwador is probably not going to come, its a rumour spread by some Pakistanis in the net !!!

And also in Indian ocean ,unlike the Malaccas, there is nothing called PIRATES !!!
Smuggling is the only underworld activity done here, u may call it as 'illegal' shipping business !!!!

Give us reason, why it wouldn't come? I can list few my self on why it would and I am not expert on how Chinese Navy works or their strategic interests. Obviously, you need some type of military there if it is going to be your "economical" hub. Only time will tell if it is a rumour or something that China is interested in. US is protecting it's economic and strategic interests in Persian Gulf with its Navy and I don't see any reason why China wouldn't do the same. Of course, India does not want China anywhere near Indian Ocean which explains the it's a rumour rumour.

China Military Naval base at Gwadar is not an IF but when and there is no reason for any country to get nervous because as we know it's just a rumour, right?

Here are my points :

1. China is no USA , so it neither can afford nor sustain ( technologically, financially,politically,... etc) a naval base thousands of kilometres from its shores.

2. Currently USN is at Persian Gulf, USArmy at Afghanistan (may be in Iran in future) so it won't tolerate a PLAN cotingent (how small it may be) right under its nose . I donno, How PLAN commodores will feel when an US carrier is near , a PC3 is over it and may be subs under !!!!

3. And regarding India. IN definately won't be happy . Indian frigates and submarines may start harrassing manuoveres at PLAN ships , Naval fighters and survillance planes may make continuous survelliance and mock raids on PLAN ships . It will be humiliating for PLAN, it will need to input more and more ships and subs , and which will be an useless economical burden .
Chinese Navy was built to protect its shorelines from superior powers (Japan,US) and till today its more or less a coastal Navy . Indian Navy was build to dominate Indian ocean (because there is no S.Asian navy to challenge IN) and that's why it needs the carriers !!! But out side Indian ocean Indian Navy is as helpless as PLAN in neutral waters .

Some Pakistanis argue that PLAN will use its sub force , but let me remind that India's anti submarine system is one of the best in Asia , since its only viable threat is from the Pakistani submarines.

The only Indian ship lost during Indo-Pak wars is from a sub attack. Pakistan has always used her sub force to counter IN . So India has fourty yrs of experience in anti submarine warefare , and currently after Pakistani Agosta acquirement , India's anti sub section has been throughly modernised ( of course with Russian, Israeli and Freangh help but much has been made in India itself ) !!

I hope that I make some sense ......................

Makes a lot of sense. Considering the manner in which the Americans are involved in the Middle East, a Chinese presence is a distant dream. Over the past 50 years, the Americans have pushed out the French, the Brits, and then the Soviets out of the Middle East. At a time when all of these have been more powerful that today's China.

China will initially develop Gwadar as a commercial port until it becomes a
major hub for the sale of goods to the middle east once this is done China
can more easily justify the presence of a larger naval force at Gwadar.

Of course it might terrify the Indians but then again Pakistan is a sovereign
country and dosn't give in to Indian posturing so there's very little India
can do about the matter.

I had a chat with some friends who import goods from south east asia and
proposed that goods could be transported via Gwadar and Suez to Europe
but they said Suez couldn't handle the extra traffic. does anybody have any
any info on this ?

China needs to really develop it's navy and the best method to do that is commerce and interaction with the outside world.

yes gwadar has potention 2 be huge n succesfull port due 2 its strategic location(route between west n east).pak did not only get benefit in military but economy too.us will fully alert of any trial by the chinese to expand their navy.i believe us will seriously monitor in this case.

us will put pressure on pak to prevent the chinese to deploy thier fleet.but us will not do anything to pak because of afghanistan.us still need pak help to eliminate taliban element

ArjunMKI, the Chinese are death scared of the US choking off its oil and gas supply. If the US decided to do that, China would be extremely screwed. That is why a PLAN presence will happen in the near future. The Chinese aren't investing all of this money into the port for nothing you know. Also, it isn't Pakistanis that are spreading rumors of a PLAN presence but the Western media. The source I just gave you isn't a Pakistani source. The Guardian has also reported the same thing about China's pearl strategy. Why do you think that the IN is desperately trying to increase the size of its navy? It's obvious because they are preparing for an eventual PLAN presence. And all the recent events taking place in Gwadar right now (all the BLA related violence) is showing that foreign intelligence agencies are trying their best to disrupt Gwadar. However, a couple of rocket attacks aren't going to deter China and Pakistan from building one of the largest deep sea ports in the world.

Gwadar is going to benefit pakistan and china way too much for them to change their plans because US or india don't like it. this port can increase pakistan's economic earning quite a lot. think of all the trade that's going to go through here. china will initially not have much military there. but once taiwan is under control and mass production of modern destroyers and frigates starts, you can be sure, there's going to be some modern hardware parked right at Gwardar from china. also pakistan is going to use this as their major naval base too. they can't let india blockade karachi again, so if a nation want to attack pakistan at Gwadar, they'll drag china into a war. don't think anyone want to fight pakistan and china right now especially together.
