Let’s Talk About Those F-35 Kill Ratio Reports From Red Flag
15 kills per loss sounds impressive, but there’s always more to the story.

Our boy Ty should really re-name his little blog the "pessimist", with an anecdotal "15 to 1" kill ratio, big boys and girls should be able to figure out that the F-35 is doing very well in the first week or so of "Red Flag"?? then our boy beats on Red Flag itself??? and calls it controversial??

Theres nothing controversial about Red Flag, it is highly effective in training and preparing our Air Force, fellow services, and allies in the art and science of aerial warfare and winning engagement, rather than losing aircraft and pilots. He goes back to the Indians and their SU-30 MKI. Nothing controversial or surprising about that, people don't always like the results of their testing, most work to get better next time after getting the "picture?

The F-35 is not a perfect airplane, it does in fact still suffer from very early program "mismanagement", it did in fact require numerous mods to fix some early fatigue failure/cracking specifically a major titanium bulkhead on the B, was replaced with an aluminum bulkhead to save weight, not a smart move. Like "ALL" aircraft?? "and most attractive women", she did gain weight and needed to work out to get herself "squared away!"..

I has become a "mark of a true journo" to play "Woodward and Bernstein" and beat on "govt spending, waste, programs like the LCS, and the FORD, and make us all look "smarter than smart"??

The cancelation of the F-22, (the most ignorant hit job of all time), is the "blood in the water", that continues to draw the "sharks", the end result of all this hyper-critical reporting is a skeptical public, and a body politic, that loves to wallow around in the blood stained innards and proclaim themselves, "champions of the people"!

The real result is very expensive programs to build a relative few very good aircraft? ships? tanks?? in other words we are much less capable of defending ourselves or helping our allies, and far more vulnerable to oppressive regimes which build their weapons of warfare on the backs of their people, who have to settle for a sub-standard living, and their individual freedoms being taken away!

So "come on Tyler", all this negative krap just shuts down the flow of information for all of us, because nobody dares give you any "inside baseball info", cause you'll take advantage of the privledge, and criticize your friends who "put you in the know in the first place"??

Fair and Balanced really isn't to much to expect is it, just give the F-35 Program lead Chris Bogdan a smidgen of credit, for saving this program, and building a "damn fine airplane", yes its expensive, yes its complicated, yes, its going to take some time to "mature" this aircraft. God Bless the US Marines, and the USAF for jumping in with both feet to assure the integration and success of the F-35, and the security of each of us, who are dependant on airpower to maintain our freedom and security.

Way to go F-35 Teams, and way to go Red Flag, thanks to all of you for your hard work and dedication to excellence, and putting your expertise to work to build and fly the most important aircraft of the 21st Century, we can't do it, without YOU!

bro I'll briefly make just a general comment:
over the years I've noticed the supporters of some aircraft either don't care about OR request ROE after they've "won" OR "lost" in an exercise :)
will give you just one example: Mar 31, 2016
time will tell, Brumby, just can't resist in this point:

Heh, Heh?? yep, you post this stuff, and I'll "blast it", kinda like a trap shooter calling "pull"!, waiting for the next clay bird to fly? Like I said, big boys and girls know the F-35 has done very well for itself,,,, your little quote is from the German's, flying the same aircraft as the UK,,, apparently a Typhoon regenerated rather quickly after he had just been killed? and lo and behold a Raptor was in front of him???

I don't know, I wasn't there, but the F-22 drivers called "fowl" on that whole little scenario,,,they didn't put out their own story, because the Wing Commander ordered them not to, said it really didn't matter, they all knew what had happened, but that it was classified...

If you can find the actual circumstances of that and refresh our memories have at it. I can, and will assure you that the F-35, operating in conjunction with the F-22's at Red Flag, or operating "anywhere else on the planet" will "bring home the bacon", maybe that's arrogant, but like the Hayabusa boys used to say?? "Its not bragging if its true?":D

I'm not gonna argue that I'm a big fan of the F-35, and an even bigger fan of the F-22! they are both winners, drawn from the same deep gene pool at LockMart!

LOL I hope we both are having fun here, but, you know, I noticed something phenomenal (or "phenomenal") had happened

one, soon before the IOC declaration for F-35B:
... F-35B IOC was described as such a success in
F-35 OT-1 By the Numbers

which you may (and some of you won't :) read to check this graphics:

which is yet another
F-35 OT-1 By the Numbers

...

two, soon before the IOC declaration for F-35A:

three, now soon after Trump criticized the F-35 Program ... that's why I asked Yesterday at 8:13 AM if 15:1 had been scripted ... and will leave it at that

Heh! Heh! Heh! we're having fun, you just have to post this stuff, and I just have to "shoot it down?", what are good friends for, we don't agree on every little thing, but we are big boys.

No, the 15 to 1 is not scripted, its an anecdotal "snapshot" of how things are going for the F-35, if your read the ROEs the F-35s lot will get tougher with each engagement. They have really "turned up the heat" in order to challenge the F-35s and F-22s....

I grew up in the USA, I hate frauds and charlatans on both sides,,,,I grew up with LockMart, the Dash One for the C-130 was my earliest "picture book", and I loved it. If the F-35 wasn't and incredible airplane, think of it as "Raptor Light" as far as the airframe/aerodynamics go, the Raptor's great because it is a very efficient aircraft, flys well, simple to fly, yet very, very high performance. Some of that is because of the F-119, but most of that is just solid design and execution,

Defense acquisition here in the USA is simply a very open process, everybody, and anybody can look at the books, see the finished product, and understand its deployment. Yes LockMart is a very large company that has done very well in the Defense Industry, but they have also presented us with a superior product, that do not disappoint, and that have played a key role in establishing and maintaining "air superiority"!

So you can call me a fan boy, I am, I'm not ashamed of LockMart, I'm proud of LockMart! who else could have given us the F-22, and who else could have given us the F-35??? (take another look at the X-32???) I love Boeing Aerospace as well, but in these two competitions, and they were very competitive, the best airplane won.

I love the F-15, a fighter pilots dream when designed and "rolled out", and Boeing may end up giving us the best airplane in the next competition?

cool, I grew up under Communists who had been lying to me for the first 18 years of my life (OK I can't remember the first let's say 4), which I realized pretty early by the howling sound of Communistic radio jamming stations "mixed" with the info about how it was going for Communists in Afghanistan, what had happened in Chernobyl and other stuff which they somehow didn't present in their radio station (their TV station was showing several faces all over again, LOL now) ... after Communists had been gone here, the transformation was rough, with plenty of Scams and Bribery, also Military-related, going down from top-level Politicians and their Advisors, and up, (EDIT now I very carefully picked the link:

) ... so, as my IT consultant used to say, 'if you're not paranoid, you don't pay attention', and you, Brother, you may call me paranoid (since you said above you're "a fan boy" :)

944th Wing said:
LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The first Japan Air Self Defense Force national representative to Luke took to the skies Feb. 7 during a mission five years in the making.

After several months of training, Lt. Col. Nakano, JASDF F-35A pilot, completed a solo sortie and hit a historical milestone for the JASDF and 944th Fighter Wing.

Nakano was sent off on his flight by a joint delegation from the 944 FW, Lockheed Martin, and Japanese staff.

“This is an historical event for JASDF and my career as a pilot,” said Nakano. “My first flight was perfect. The weather was fine, and the jet was great. I'll never forget this day.”

With the mission accomplished and the day behind them, JASDF personnel look ahead for the next milestone and advance in their mission at Luke.

“My goal is to stand up the first F-35 squadron in Japan as soon as possible,” continued Nakano. “In order to enhance the aircrafts capabilities, I have to be a more efficient F-35 pilot.”

The first F-35 mission with a JASDF pilot is the culmination of years of planning and hard work.

“To watch a Japanese fighter pilot fly Japan’s F-35, launched by a Japanese crew chief, saluted by Japanese maintainers, while supported by an elite team of American men and women on American soil, was surreal,” said Lt. Col. Sean Holahan, 944th Operations Group Detachment 2 commander.

Holahan flew alongside Nakano and guided him through the sortie.

“It’s hard to describe the deep pride we all felt while sharing this moment with our friends and allies,” continued Holahan. “It’s been nine years since the 944th has had jets on our ramp so this was a sight for sore eyes.”

Next week JASDFs fourth and final F-35 is scheduled to arrive at Luke and over the next year the 944 FW will train three classes of JASDF F-35 pilots and graduate several dozen JASDF maintainers.

In addition to the Foreign Military Sales mission led by the 944 OG/Det 2 Ninjas, Luke is scheduled to have six fighter squadrons and 144 F-35s. Over the next several years, Luke will be training FMS pilots from Japan, Israel and South Korea along with partner nations including Australia, Italy, Norway, Turkey, Netherlands, Denmark, and Canada.

...and the beat goes on!

according to DefenseNews Israeli F-35 buy-back surpasses $1 billion
Israel’s Defense Ministry announced Sunday that completed industrial cooperation or buy-back contracts with Lockheed Martin on the F-35 program surpassed the $1 billion benchmark since Israel signed its first contract in 2010 for an initial 19 fighters.

According to Avi Dadon, MoD’s deputy director of purchasing, Israeli firms entered into $258 million worth of new contracts during 2016, a 33 percent surge from the previous year.

“The scope of industrial cooperation between [Lockheed Martin] and Israeli industries, just in the past year, illustrates the big, raw potential of this deal to the Israeli economy,” Dadon said.

Key Israeli suppliers to Lockheed Martin for the year that just closed include Elbit Systems, which together with Rockwell Collins expanded their production contract for sensor-fuzed helmets by $206 million; and Israel Aerospace Industries, which received a $26 million follow-on contract for wing sets.

Two other Elbit subsidiaries – Cyclone and Tadiran – also scored orders exceeding $20 million last year for structural components and radio amplifiers respectively.

Dadon noted that several Lockheed Martin contracts were extended to small firms in northern Israel to support industries near the “line of confrontation” along the border with Lebanon.

He said the Ministry aimed to work in the coming year “to further deepen” industrial cooperation associated with Israel’s F-35 program.

Israel is now negotiating its third contract for another 17 F-35A fighters, which will bring the Israel Air Force’s inventory to 50.

In an interview late last year, Jack Crisler, Lockheed Martin’s vice president for F-35 business development, said Israeli technology was benefiting not only those planes destined for the Israel Air Force, but in many cases, all partner and customer nations of the fifth-generation fighter.

Marine Corps Shuffling F-35B Squadron Transition Order

The Marine Corps has pulled an AV-8B Harrier II attack squadron from its spot in the F-35B transition schedule and replaced it with an F/A-18 Hornet fighter-attack squadron because of the better health of the Harrier force.

Marine Attack Squadron 311 (VMA-311), based at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma, Ariz., was next in line to make the transition in 2018, following the transitions of Marine Fighter-Attack Squadron 121 (VMFA-121) and VMFA-211.

During a Feb. 8 roundtable with reporters at the Pentagon, Lt. Gen. Jon Davis said VMFA-122, a Hornet unit based at MCAS Beaufort, S.C., will take VMA-311’s transition slot and, upon completion of F-35B transition, will change its home base from Beaufort to Yuma.

He said the Independent Readiness Review of the Harrier fleet showed a more robust posture than anticipated. The Harrier force has seen a 23 percent increase in ready base aircraft, the service’s metric for aircraft ready to fly. The Harrier force is scheduled to serve until 2026.

Davis said he would prefer an F-35B procurement rate of 37 aircraft per year, compared with the approximately 20 per year scheduled for fiscal 2018 through 2021. He said that would enable the Corps to accelerate squadron transitions and retire both its F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B fleets by 2026.

Davis also said that the fourth operational F-35B squadron will be VMFA-225, to be redesignated from VMFA(AW)-225, based at MCAS Miramar, Calif. — the AW designation stands for All-Weather. Another Miramar-based squadron, VMFA-314, will be the first Marine squadron to make the transition to the carrier-based F-35C.

The Marine Corps currently has about 50 F-35Bs in inventory, including training and test aircraft. Last month, the Corps moved VMFA-121 to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, where it formed part of Marine Aircraft Group 12. VMFA-121 will deploy a detachment onboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp beginning in 2018, the same year that VMA-211 will deploy a detachment on board the amphibious assault ship USS America.
