re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

It is three new types of plane for the price of two or two and a half and all three seriously compromised by the very different forces acting on the aircraft during take off and landing. It is much better to design three different aircraft and give them the same types of electronics and weapons. The last are the bigger cost items but combining much of the air frame design means lugging around a lot of useless ballast and spending a lot of excess money testing these air frames.

I don't know about the cost overruns being detrimental to the F-35 program. But it looks like there is a buyer in the Asia Pacific country that will be interested.

There are nine countries helping fund and develop the JSF, F-35. All of them will ultimately get fighters. These include:

In North America: The US and Canada

In Europe: The UK, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark and Norway

In the Mid East: Turkey

In the Far east (Western Pacific) : Australia

In addition to this. Several countries have already made clear their intentions to buy. These include, Japan, S. Korea, and Israel.

So, to date you have 12 countries...and I believe that number will grow. For example, I expect Spain will buy the F-35B for their carriers.

Further in the future I believe we definitely will see quite a few others...but within the next 5-10 years I believe all of those countries named will buy into the F-35.

The F-35 has the potential to be the most highly exported modern (5th) generation fighter in history. With its three variants, it will enhance that potential. Particularly, of course, for the US. But also others. The UK and the US will both use the F-35C for CATOBAR carrier operations. India may later wnat some for their carriers. France is less likely.

Many nations will look at the F-35B for their sea control and LHA, LPH STOVL type vessels. As stated, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, S. Korea, etc.

And then others (ultimately the majority) will take the F-35A for their air froces.

Here's a link to Norway's latest vote to continue with and move forward with the F-35:

Guys, I was reading earlier today that the F-35 program is going to get funded with $8.5 billion USD this year via the new DoD funding bill... and the beat goes on.;)

Aside from the detainee issue, the bill set to hit the president's desk will include $8.5 billion to purchase the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. JSF funds were included despite efforts by Senate Armed Services Ranking Member John McCain to cut F-35 money in the bill, he said at the same Hill briefing.

This. A plane that is meant to fit every role is a plane that can do nothing. Any cost saving they hoped to have is not only gone, but replaced by increase in cost.

Congress just funded $8.5 billion dollars for the aircraft. $8.5 billion. Those two gents have no clue what is going between Lookheed-Martin and the US DoD..none.

Keep telling yourself that.

The test pilots are already saying very, very good things about thus aircraft in all versions.

The STOVL speaks for itself, and the Navy mod is what the US and the UK now will use on their super carriers.

This aircraft will revolutionize modern air warfare and aircraft development. I predict that one day it will equal or outsell significantly the F-16 sales through the years.

Every major aircraft program, particularly more difficult technology and manufacturing practices like this goes through hardship and birthing pains. The F-111 did, the V-22 did, the F-14...many of the Migand SU fighters. This is no differemt. Yet, in the end it will be one of if not the most successful aircraft of all time.

Interesting videos, but you got to give every new plane a chance. I don't like it when people start downing the plane even before mass production, whether it's from China, US, UK or Russia. It takes time to see the whole picture of the progress. I've already read my share of critics on the J-20 and even the C-919 commercial plane.

It's too early to say that the aircraft will be commercially successful. The Netherlands have already spent a billion dollars on the things but might still decide not to buy. We need them if we want to help the US in any further military adventures. But there is no likelihood of an independent Dutch assault on any country outside Europe, the possibility of use against our neighbors is zero and a European military adventure is certainly far away.

If you make that kind of investment it's hard too walk away Just imagine having too say too the public " We spent a billion dollars worth of your hard earned money for nothing... Oh Please remember I am the guy on your side this election day..." second European military adventure far away? have we already forgotten Libya?

The current situation in Libya is no good advertisement to military adventurism and that might well continue a long time. Also the financial situation of West European countries will necessitate a reduction of military budgets.
