The current situation in Libya is no good advertisement to military adventurism and that might well continue a long time. Also the financial situation of West European countries will necessitate a reduction of military budgets.

True, but the budget is still set aside for those important high tech military hardware. It might be limited in numbers, but nevertheless gotta have it.

It is not. It is mend to be included in future budgets.

As satellites of the US they had no choice, but will that still be true when the economy really tanks?

Satellites of the US? Really a very political statement.
The Reason they will buy is there own needs. Although good fighters the Eurofighter, Rafal, Grippen, Su's and migs are at this point all gen 4.5 at best. the Majority of the worlds Airframes are 1970's Ear a best Stealth changed the game but building a new fighter too gen 5 spec is pricy. they made a move a already established move. they bought a establishing product at the ground floor of construction and development in order too get what they wanted. It's a very played move. Just look at the Panther Tank. a common product that is popular with some of the same nations. they also recognized that even in this time of budget and economic troubles they need it as those are the same problems that start conflicts.

It is three new types of plane for the price of two or two and a half and all three seriously compromised by the very different forces acting on the aircraft during take off and landing...combining much of the air frame design means lugging around a lot of useless ballast and spending a lot of excess money testing these air frames.
Actually the three designs are optimized. So, they do not lug around the extra stuff. For example, the F-35C navy version has a larger wing and strenthened landing gear that the other two do not carry around. The F-35B has all of the STOVL equipment, nozzles, and changes to the fuselage that the othes do not. So, the commonality does not extend to the point where they all carry around the un-needed equipment for thier particular design.

Of course they don't carry unneeded equipment, but the structures are largely compromised. They have the same components, but strengthened for the specific requirements, while designing the aircraft for the specific function might lead to a different arrangement of parts that would lead to less fatigue problems. Remember, as the most obvious example, that the design vertical velocity of an aircraft recovering to an aircraft carrier is twice that of an air force aircraft, meaning that the forces will be about four times as large not only on the undercarriage but also on the anchoring of the undercarriage to the fuselage bulkhead concerned and the structure round about. So a different structural arrangement might be advantageous but contrary to the concept of the common basic plane. It is there that you loose compared with designing the aircraft specifically for its function.

J-20 got canards :D

i think we shouldn't go there, a long and arduous exchange of endless arguments will follow, without any consequent result

let's just say they are tailored to different needs, go to the SDF corner if you really want to know what people think about your question, this thread is for news

Hi Guys. If you compare J-20 to the F-35, what are each side's advantages and disadvantages?

Comparison threads are not permitted in this forum. paintgun said it best..

And our forum rules state..

4. Don't make unnecessary comparison threads like "J-10 vs. F-16". Or who will win the war between China and the US? Posting such as these lead to nothing but flame wars.
