oh I've done in the meantime, just thought you would tell me more ... without any additional info though, according to me, it shows how grossly delayed the F-35 program is: F-35Bs were declared "combat ready" last summer! plus they were deployed to Japan this winter by the way I'm wondering what kind of missions they're performing there as I didn't notice anything since the pompous announcement of their arrival

Okay did some checking because I was kind wondering myself. F35 is at Block 3I software, that enables weapons and helmet use. The F35A did some Air gunning earlier so the weapons are operational the next round of blocks is 3F
  • Block 2B – Block 2B provides initial warfighting capabilities, including but not limited to expanded data links, multi-ship fusion and initial live weapons. The U.S. Marines declared IOC in July 2015 with Block 2B. With Block 2B, more than 87 percent of the required code for full warfighting capability is flying.
  • Block 3i – Block 3i provides the same tactical capabilities as Block 2B. The principal difference between 2B and 3i is the implementation of new hardware, specifically the updated Integrated Core Processor. The Air Force declared IOC with Block 3i in August 2016. With Block 3i, 89 percent of code required for full warfighting capability is flying.
  • Block 3F – Block 3F provides 100 percent of the software required for full warfighting capability, including but not limited to data link imagery, full weapons and embedded training. Mission Systems Block 3F software development is 98 percent complete.
As of October 2016, 100 percent of the required F-35 airborne software is written and being tested in 3F Flight Test. Additional ground based software, such as ALIS and Training Systems, is 95 percent complete.
basically The weapons are up the helmet is working but not all the sensors are working yet. I had heard an interview about it a few weeks back that summed it up by saying that they still need the next patch to clean up aiming and firing on ground targets. There are also some weapons not yet ready. Presumably more specialized air to ground systems. And they are on schedule. assuming that Block 3F is bought.

The U.S. Air Force has ordered ammunition for its F-35 fighters -- the new 25mm x 137 Frangible Armor Piercing -- from Germany's Rheinmetall. U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Darlene Seltmann.

March 6 (UPI) -- Germany's Rheinmetall on Monday announced it will provide the U.S. Air Force with ammunition for F-35 fighters starting in December.

The order from the U.S. Air Force is worth $6.5 million and covers several 10,000 rounds in four lots, the company said.

"The order is of major strategic significance to Rheinmetall for two reasons," the company

. "For one thing, the U.S. Air Force is currently procuring the F-35 on a large scale, with 1,200 planes on order. Numerous other nations have opted for the new aircraft as well... For another, the ammunition selected -- the new 25mm x 137 Frangible Armor Piercing -- complements Rheinmetall's existing array of high-performance aircraft ammunition."

Rheinmetall said the order will allow the company to bring its expertise to bear in the field of aircraft armament. "This means that further major orders can be expected, especially since the first user nations are already ordering smaller amounts of this advanced ammunition for testing purposes," the company said.

Rheinmetall's FAP ammunition was developed in conjunction with NATO air forces to provide the F-35 with superior lethality against armored vehicles at extreme slant ranges, as well for use in air-to-air engagements, making the 25mm x 137 FAP a "true all-purpose cartridge."

Manufacture of the ammunition will take place at Rheinmetall Switzerland but the company intends to have the ammunition of possible follow-up contracts assembled in the United States by its Rheinmetall Day & Zimmermann Munitions joint venture.

U.S. military wants F-35 to carry weapons that destroy moving ground targets
Feb 21, 2017
Despite being among the most technologically advanced low-observable warplanes on the planet, the Lockheed Martin F-35 has one significant shortcoming. The Joint Strike Fighter cannot strike moving ground targets using the targeting system and weapons loadout delivered in its final combat Lightning II configuration, Block 3F. The challenge is the F-35 is currently unable to lead a target with its laser designator to compensate for movement. This means the aircraft is limited to striking ...

How to Effectively Challenge Fifth Gen Fighters in Training

Fifth generation pilots need a new generation of red air that is focused more on sensors and a family of capabilities instead of “linear” comparisons, F-22 and F-35 pilots said recently. Operators of the nation’s best fighters want to see new adversaries that are “extremely agile” in their use of sensors employed against Raptors and Lightning IIs to give those pilots the best possible training, USMC Lt. Col. David Berke, force management branch chief, said on a panel of fifth generation fighter pilots at

. “For far too long we have measured our capability against their capability in linear fashions,” such as the speed or agility of the aircraft, Berke said. That is an “ancient way of thinking that is not relevant anymore,” he said. Adversary platforms need to network together and provide an advanced threat to challenge fifth generation aircraft, he said.

Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. If the primitive precision guided munitions of 40+ years ago could lock and track targets .. I'm sure if this problem does exist it is an easy fix.

"Despite being among the most technologically advanced low-observable warplanes on the planet, the Lockheed Martin F-35 has one significant shortcoming. The Joint Strike Fighter cannot strike moving ground targets using the target system and weapons loadout delivered in Block 3F, the final combat Lightning II configuration of the 17-year system development and demonstration phase.

The challenge is the F-35 is currently unable to lead a target with its laser designator to compensate for movement. This means the aircraft is limited to striking fixed or slow-moving objects such as the surface-to-air missiles it has proven so skilled at destroying in Red Flag exercises.

As the close air support fighter of the future and replacement for the 20th-century A-10, F-16, F/A-18 and AV-8B, this issue has prompted the services to try to move forward integration of the 500-lb. dual-mode Laser/GPS/IMU Raytheon GBU-49 Lot 5 Enhanced Paveway II (EP-2) guidance assembly. EP-2 has built-in proportional navigation software that automatically calculates and compensates for target direction and speed; its inertial measurement unit adjusts the flightpath for wind conditions.

The F-35 has already entered service with the U.S. Marine Corps (F-35B Block 2B) and Air Force (F-35A Block 3i), equipped with the laser-guided 500-lb. Raytheon/Lockheed GBU-12 Paveway II and GPS/IMU-guided 2,000- and 1,000-lb. Boeing GBU-31/32 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM). Block 3F will add the 1,000-lb. Raytheon AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (F-35C), 250-lb. Boeing GBU-39 Small-Diameter Bomb Increment 1 (F-35A), and the United Kingdom’s 500-lb. Raytheon UK Paveway IV (F-35B)."
