F-35 Joint Strike Fighter News, Videos and pics Thread

Until they install the Software updates.
well that's a generic reaction, but what's interesting is "The Joint Strike Fighter cannot strike moving ground targets using the target system and weapons loadout delivered in Block 3F, the final combat Lightning II configuration ..." (quote from inside of #4510) considering F-35 will be pitched against A-10
'in a series of comparison evaluations starting in 2018'
(if interested, just google the above line)

it'll be also interesting to see if F-35 can do strafing (with the software patches, of course, anyway I'm intrigued by the idea to first use the cameras for something what would be very close, feed the imagery into a helmet, and then commence fire)

Why? The gun systems on all modern fighters use feeds radar, camera or and visual to lead calculate for attack. And have since the late second world war.

LOL yes the part in parentheses right above sounds awkward ...

... I was thinking of what I had read which was there's an additional difficulty to sync an externally mounted gun (as the one you posted about Yesterday at 7:53 AM) with F-35B DAS and HMDS, but at the same time I found it funny a target can be just several hundred meters and first would get filmed, the film played, and only then the target shot at ...

... I should've formulated that part differently

Jura these are modern digital machines there is no film. And the time delay between the helmet display and the image capture is microseconds.
Fighters have been using externally mounted weapons of all kinds for over half a century. A gun systems or rocket pod or missiles all feed data though the fighters attack systems. The computer interface and use inputs on what rounds are loaded as well as the current flight data and ranging of the target to plot a firing solution. The only change for F35 is the number of sensors and that it's all running though a central computer interface that displays on a Helmet display rather then a heads up.

The A10 was built around the Avenger 30mm cannon and has a drum to feed that monster. Missiles and rockets were added to but they actually didn't really have the sensors for them until the Charlie model. Most of the time they used a Maverick as a sensor.
The problem with using the gun as the primary is you have to be close in range of most Manpad and all Triple A to use it even with the 30mm. This is what the A10 guys forget. By being so close the attrition rates jump.
F35, AH64D/E, Super Cobras,F16, F/A18 and F15E all do CAS missions with a preference to missiles which allows them to hang back away from Manpad and most triple A. Even the AC130 is moving away from the true "gunship" with equalizer cannon, 40mm pom pom and howitzer to a more missile based approach with Hellfires, APKWS II, Griffin missiles and bombs with a gun system in the form or the Bushmaster III and 120 mm Mortar as secondary.
