This is actually a sad example of why the U.S. originally wanted to be friends with China and cultivated its rise, or at the very least that China had friends in the U.S. The author Ikenson is a well known expert in the U.S. and he has been arguing China friendly policies for decades. He even helped lobby the U.S. to let China into the WTO. In the 2000s he wrote articles arguing that the U.S. shouldn't do a trade war with China and that trade was good. In the 2010s he argued that the U.S. shouldn't cite China for currency manipulation. He always argued the pro-China position in those days no matter what the debate was in the U.S.

Here is his article from 2006 about a visit to China. Very heartwarming:

The fact that he has turned into a hawk now is a sad example of how China due to its more hardline turn under Xi Jinping made America more hostile to it. It was NOT inevitable at all. Like I said, I have lived in the U.S. for 30 years and Americans are a nice, kindhearted people. They are just disappointed that China turned hardline after Xi, instead of giving its people more rights and freedoms.

I remember the iraq war was sold as wmd than "rights and freedoms" to total mess...

IMO, follow the money. These type of guys made money with the rise of China selling articles and investments, now being "Anti-China" is were the money is at. Since both political parties is using fear mongering to get elected, how much do you think this guy will sell if he claim "China is not that bad, the US does the same thing." He would be banished as a traitor. Since you claim you live in the US, go in public and declare that you love xi/ccp and see how much "rights and freedom" you get from the public and maybe even the fbi.

Edit:
I just read the article, he basically said "that the US will only be happy when China (or any other non western/vassal country) be non self-sufficent, be only factory workers and lays down on its back and allows predators to freely attack its belly "

Anyone who quotes neo-con Cato here should get a immediate warning for trolling.

I honestly think the rules should be updated that if people post any neo-con American think thank info more than once get a warning. And anyone posting Indian fantasy also gets a warning.

Cato is one of the most dovish think tanks. Not only has it pushed consistently pro-China positions in U.S. debate, it also opposed the first Gulf War (a position which caused the organization to lose nearly $1 million in funding), opposed the U.S. Haiti and Kosovo attacks (which resulted in the Chinese embassy being bombed), opposed George W. Bush's Iraq War II, and opposed President Barack Obama's attack on Libya.

Take your threatening calls for censorship elsewhere.

Well, he's a troll. Or should I say an US "exceptionalist". Just read the goddamned article. He says China shouldn't produce equivalent products for its own use, but the US is entitled to nerf China's efforts in 5G because the US must have primacy in communications. Seriously.

Thank you western expert who lived in America for "over 30 years". Would you have any citations for "Americans are a nice, kindhearted people?" Did we ask all African Americans or natives about that assertion? Or just a bunch of white southern baptist with some american god complex?

Pro-tip: Stop bragging about having lived in America for 30 years... alot of members on SDF have lived in North America or Europe for that time, and it doesn't exactly make you any more or less credible than the rest of us.

Cato shilling for free trade is just them being useful idiots. They are dumb enough to think its a good system that works as advertised...

That is not the same as being sincere.
