Has the displacement figure now changed to 70,000 tonnes?

If if remember correctly, it was in under 60,000 tonnes. Can any body shed some light on this 70,000 claim?

In CV001A's construction process, 30% of labor hour was spent on welding, the qualified rate of welding seam reached 97% in X-ray inspection

Good info. Looks like Chinese shipbuilding is not inferior to the vaunted Japanese quality standards in terms of welding and finish.

Where does that dumb meme come from that Chinese warships are built to commercial standards to be cheaper and faster completed?

China’s first homemade aircraft carrier will likely enter mooring trials next month ahead of schedule, said Hu Wenming, general director of construction of the aircraft carrier, CCTV.com reported on Aug. 3.

Hu introduced that construction of China’s second aircraft carrier, also the country’s first homemade one, is going well after it hit the water in Dalian on April 26 this year. Hu added that the carrier will likely start mooring trials next month ahead of schedule to test if its equipment is able to meet the requirements for further sea trial.

China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, has been delivered to the Chinese Navy for training and research. China’s second carrier will be based on the Liaoning and will be among the world’s most advanced, further improving China’s research and development of aircraft carriers, according to the director.

Hu also disclosed that a total of 412 state-owned enterprises, private enterprises, and scientific research institutions in China have contributed to its development, occupying 77.4 percent of the total, which indicates that its construction is the result of national collective efforts.

In addition, through construction of the carrier, China has possessed a talent team at an average age of 36 and gained the ability to independently research and develop, design, and manage an aircraft carrier project, which has laid a foundation for the country to build better ones in the future, the director noted.

It seems that the wind speed, air temperature, air humidity, and the temperature change in steel are recorded as part of the welding process. It is not hard to imagine how stringent the inspection will be.

Well, I am afraid this is pretty much self contradictory:

"China’s second carrier will be based on the Liaoning and will be among the world’s most advanced"

The Liaoning is a 30 year old design. Any STOBAR designed based on it, despite improving its sensors and some other areas, will not be among the world's most advanced carriers.

That will not happen until the get a nice, advanced CATOBAR carrier out there.

Do not get me wrong. The Liaoning is a powerful tool and has some great capabilities and decent airwing.

but until the add strong AEW aircraft, and get a 5th gen strike/fighter aboard her, and then increase her sortee rate and her night time fighting capabilities...even as good a tool as she is is not among the most advanced.

Right now, that is reserved for the US, France, and now the RN with their new carriers.

The RN carrier will have a 5th gen strike/fighter. Although I honestly believe its helo borne AEW will be better than the Chinese...it itself is still not up to par with the fixed wing E-2C/D AEW that the US and French utilize.

Anyhow...there is no doubt in my mind that these two carriers are good vessels and are bringing the PLAN a much better capability than they have ever had in terms of naval air. But I also believe they will be the last STOBAR carriers the Chinese ever build and that their next carriers will step up to be more advanced and capable.

A point on language: As I read it long ago the right way to use aircraft at sea is to build the Short Take Off and Landing apparatus into the ship, not the aircraft. In that sense both cat and ski ramp carriers are equivalent if both have landing wires and there can be no doubt that other aircraft like AEW types can be launched over a ski ramp. The wrong type is the ship without landing wires like the new British flattops.

I would just loosely interpret that statement. I don't know if those words were uttered by a naval officer or just the journalist.

Technically you are right of course. CV17 is certainly not the most advance nor the most capable. That title goes to CVN 78 and she will remain so for the forseeable future in terms of firepower, sortie rates etc.

I would take that statement more as a nationalistic pride akin to the town's burger joint calling themselves the best 'hamburger' in the world .. or the Cubs calling themselves WORLD champions when MLB is only played in the US.
