This PLAN shipmate is lighting a boiler aboard CV-16. The boiler room/main machinery space is very clean & well maintained. To me as an old salt he's missing his safety gear. Boilers are know to backfire and explode. Check out the gear the USN wears when lighting off boilers. Note the faceshield and special fire resistant clothing and heavy duty gloves.

You are right on the absence of PPE, pictures of these guys in what is a very noisy machine room show them not wearing ear muffs or ear plugs is very disturbing. Permanent hearing damage will occur within minutes of being exposed to noise level of 98 db and above. Inspite of me being careful and always wearing hearing protection I have lost 14% of my heating due to the fact that on average I spend more then 8.0hrs a day in a nosy plantroom.

Again, this is just your personal opinion which you have no evidence for. We have already discussed this before. BTW, if these positions are not available when recovery in progress, why are these positions slanted exactly so that they do not intrude on to the angled flight deck? Clearly they are meant to park fighters in such a way as to allow other fighters to land at the same time.

There are deck markings. On the right side of the landing area is a "fool line" or "clear line". The no. 10 position is not behind this line, so it can not be used while recovery is in progress. On the left side of the landing area is no such line. There is no space intend to park aircraft at recovery phase.

Could be a lack of experience on the part of the PLAN, but also could be because they are using newer boilers with better safety features.

Given the fact that the PLAN is no stranger to steam turbine marine engines, and the minimal cost of PPE, I find it hard to believe they would not have supplied PPE if it was indeed deemed necessary. It's not like they have been skimping on PPE costs anywhere else on the Liaoning after all.

That is correct , There are different type of boiler, Induced draft, draft, atmospheric, balance draft Boiler. Without knowing the detail of boiler it is hard to make judgement.
If it induced draft fan then theoretically the pressure inside the boiler is less than atmospheric,reducing chance of blowback. Operating crew are forced to use Nomex and face shield because of OSHA requirement.

Not trying to defend the practice but China doesn't have strict OSHA regulation yet or it is not enforced

This "clear line" of yours extends all the way forward past even the the forward elevator, where it is angled towards starboard, leaving a significant amount of deck area behind the blast deflectors supposedly unusable during recovery. Clearly this is NOT a line intended for recovery purposes. You have also failed to explain why all the positions are marked so that they do not intrude onto the angled flight deck. If they were really meant to be used only when there is no recovery, then there is absolutely no reason to angle them so 'steeply' towards the long axis of the ship. I would angle them almost directly perpendicular to the long axis so I could park more planes on the port side. I could park 3 aircraft behind the waist deflector instead of the current 2. Maybe even 4. It looks to me like the solid red line represents the actual "clear line", and the dotted red line represents some other parking guide. Initially the Liaoning may use a wider margin than the solid line, but as carrier pilots gain more proficiency with landing they would start using the solid line.

Yes they would since they are usually brightly coloured and almost always in a bright orangey fluoro colour like a safety vest.Besides there is a close up of a technician in the 071 and this thread where they used a copper probe / long screw driver held hard up against a motor or engine to listen for knocking sound. I was taught to use this method when I was an apprentice a long time ago but no way in hell would do it now or teach the apprentice

Fotunately this lack of usage of PPE is not practice by major companies in China. Many years ago in Wuhan, airport baggage handlers out in the apron do not wear high vis vest but a few years later to my relief they started doing so
