China imports of iron ore from Brazil surging. Does China have a currency swap deal with Brazil, letting them buy the iron ore with Yuan? Oh yes they do.

Valemax or Chinamax as they are called, many of these are built in China including Vale Brasil. As bulk freighters, these are the largest in the world.

Although Australia is closer than Brazil, the freight carriers used with the Australian route are smaller, and less efficient, and this allows the Vale carriers to be competitive.

They also give a lower price to China to compensate for the difference in shipping costs. In exchange, China buys the entire crop.

LNG Megrez got named and had her ceremony on the 23rd at the Changxing Island side of Hudong Zhonghua shipyards. She will serve the increasingly strategically important Yamal route. For an LNG ship, the ship is massive at 295 meters in length and 45 meters in beam. She is 50% owned by Mitsui OK Lines and 50% by COSCO.

She is likely the ship behind the first Type 075 here.

An important primer on the Yamal LNG project and the fleet of icebreaking tankers specifically designed to service this route.

Just to give you an idea what 174,000 cubic meters of LNG can do, that's enough to power a country like Sweden for a month.

China is changing it energy consumption footprint, going away from coal and more into LNG.

This is a timed and gradual disruption in the Chinese shipping and logistics industry, moving away from coal carrying bulk freighters to LNG carriers.

by78 posted this on another thread showing Shandong starting her engines for another mission. The image is interesting with all the ships around in the image.

The carrier provides a direct measurement scale with the surrounding ships. There are some large tankers being built or fitted around the area. Below is an example of a COSCO tanker.

The Yamal LNG route. The Northeast Passage should be considered as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

To travel this route, it requires a specialized ice breaking LNG carrier. The Russians refer to these ships under their Arc7 specification.

This has huge implications not just for China, but also for Korea and Japan as well, in the same level as Nord Stream pipeline is to Germany.

Vladimir Rusanov is one of the four Arc7 ships built by Hudong Zhonghua to ply this route.
