I thought I'd start a thread on the capabilities of the Chinese shipbuilding industry, start off with a piece of news on JN shipyard.

By Paul Tugwell
Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Dynacom Tankers Management, Greece's
second-largest shipping company, will buy two crude oil tankers
from China's Jiangnan Shipyard, shipbroker George Moundreas &
Co. SA said.
The vessels will each have a capacity of 296,000 deadweight
tons and are scheduled to be delivered in 2009, Piraeus-based
George Moundreas wrote in a monthly report today. Dynacom will
pay about $110 million for each ship, the report said.
Dynacom will also buy four dry cargo ships, each with a
capacity of 73,000 deadweight tons, from China's New Times
Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for delivery in about 2010 for an unknown
price, the report added.
Dynacom, a closely held company based in Athens, operates
34 vessels with a total of 5.7 million deadweight tons,
Naftiliaki Greek Shipping Review said in July. Greece is the
world's largest ship-owning country.
Deadweight tons are a measure of a ship's capacity for
carrying cargo, fuel and supplies.

China's shipbuilding industry sees rapid growth
font size ZoomIn ZoomOut

China's shipbuilding industry continues to grow rapidly with shipbuilders getting new orders totaling 16.08 million deadweight tons in the first half of the year, a 113-percent rise over the same period last year, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said Thursday.

The NDRC said shipbuilders hold total orders of 50.92 million deadweight tons in the first half of the year with an increase of 43 percent, accounting for 20 percent of the world's market share.

The national Medium-and Long-Term Plan of the Shipbuilding Industry, which was approved in August by the State Council, the country's cabinet, said the industry should accelerate its restructuring and upgrading to become strong enough to drive the growth of related sectors.

China's shipbuilding industry saw production reckoned by deadweight tonnage accounting for up to 17 percent of the world market in 2005.

The plan stated that China needs to break the bottleneck of insufficient production capacity of auxiliary sectors and develop the ability to independently design high-technology ships and ocean engineering equipment.

The plan said the production of the country's shipbuilding industry was expected to take more than 25 percent of the world market.

Of course, the large oil tanker order from Venezuela a few days ago.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is to meet his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao after vowing a huge increase in oil exports to China that would scale back dependence on the US market.
.
Chavez, one of the world's most vocal critics of US President George W. Bush's administration, repeated his intention to make China one of Venezuela's biggest markets and lessen his nation's economic reliance on Washington.
.
"We will convert ourselves into one of the large oil exporters to the Chinese giant," Chavez told Venezuelan state television during his high-profile six-day visit with Chinese officials here.
.
"On the whole, production will increase in such a way that we will manage to export half a million crude barrels (a day to China) in the five next years," Chavez said.
.
Venezuela, the fifth biggest exporter of oil in the world, currently delivers 150,000 barrels per day to China, compared with 1.5 million barrels it exports to the United States.
.
Chavez said agreements would be signed with state-owned China National Petroleum Corp and China Petroleum and Chemical Corp (Sinopec) on Thursday to jointly exploit his country's oil-rich Orinoco region.
.
He said he was excited about building a strategic alliance with China and said the two nations were expected to sign nine agreements on Thursday when he meets with Hu.
.
"We are building the future. I am very heartened -- it is our fourth visit to China. Each visit is a step forward ... that is to say, a true alliance," he said.
.
Among the contracts expected to be signed are a deal to build 18 tankers to carry Venezuelan crude to China, and 12 drilling rigs to help Venezuela boost its production capacity.
.
Chavez's statements backed up his country's offer earlier this month to export between 500,000 and one million barrels of oil a day to China if it reached a goal of producing 5.8 million barrels of crude by 2012.
.
Chavez said that during the first day of his trip to China on Wednesday he had met with company officials from the telecommunications, oil tanker and building construction industries.
.
While Chavez looks to China as an alternative market to the United States, observers have said the arrangement is beneficial to Beijing because it wants to diversify its imports away from the volatile Middle East.
.
However some Chinese analysts have questioned whether the deal would be worth it, due to the higher costs associated with Venezuelan oil.
.
Aside from the extra expense of the long distance for shipping, Venezuelan crude is heavier than most of the Middle Eastern varieties, making it more costly to refine.
.
Venezuela meanwhile appears willing to accept a three-dollar discount per barrel of oil it exports to China caused by longer shipping times and increased insurance payments, according to analysts.
.
"It's a slightly higher cost on both sides but I also believe it's in the long-term interest of both countries to develop their relationship," said Mark Daniell, a Singapore-based oil analyst with consultancy Cuscaden Group.
.
As well as looking to broker energy deals, Chavez took time out on Wednesday to hail China's economic model as an alternative to the US capitalist approach.
.
Chavez praised China for being able, in less than half a century, to leave behind a "practically feudal" society and turn itself into one of the world's largest economies.
.
"It's an example for western leaders and governments that claim capitalism is the only alternative," he said.
.
"We've been manipulated to believe that the first man on the moon was the most important event of the 20th century.
.
"But no, much more important things happened, and one of the greatest events of the 20th century was the Chinese revolution."
.
Chavez was due to meet with Hu around 5:00 pm (0900 GMT) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
.
After his six-day China trip, Chavez will travel to Malaysia and Angola. — AFP

more news, I read today that the Koreans have 43% of all orders so far this year and China has 24% and Japan has 14% (maybe less). Anyhow, looks like Koreans are really pulling away

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- STX Shipbuilding Co., South Korea's
seventh-largest shipbuilder, plans to spend a total of $84
million with two affiliates to set up separate ventures that
will make ship parts and build vessels in China.
The shipbuilder will team up with STX Corp., which is the
holding company of STX Group, to build ships, STX Shipbuilding,
based in South Korea's Jinhae, Gyeongnam province, said in a
regulatory filing today. With unlisted STX Heavy Industries Co.,
the shipbuilder will produce blocks, which are structured
parts made of steel plates used for the hull of ships, it said.
STX Shipbuilding and other South Korean shipyards are
expanding overseas to lower costs and increase capacity, as
growing trade and higher oil prices are driving demand up for
vessels. South Korea's shipyards, the largest in the world, have
enough orders to keep them busy for more than three years.
``There has been a need for stable and efficient production
of blocks because of the boom in the shipbuilding industry,''
STX Shipbuilding said in a separate e-mailed statement today.
``There had been problems in securing land in South Korea to
expand. With the China ventures, it will help the company
greatly improve productivity and competitiveness.''

Dalian Ventures

STX Shipbuilding signed a preliminary agreement with the
government of Dalian, in northeast China, for the ventures, the
company said.
It will pay for 40 percent of the $50 million investment
for the shipbuilding facilities, while STX Corp. pays for the
remainder. STX Shipbuilding has yet to decide on the capacity of
the venture, which is expected to be completed by December 2008,
it added.
The shipbuilder will also invest 40 percent of $35 million
for the plant that will build ship structures, while STX Heavy
will invest the rest. The plant is expected to start operations
by July 2008.
STX Shipbuilding's requirement for blocks will increase 25
percent every year from the current 450,000 tons and reach
700,000 tons in 2008, increasing the need to secure stable
supply for its shipbuilding operations, the company said.
STX Shipbuilding specializes in vessels that carry chemical
products. It also builds container ships and has an order
backlog for 136 ships.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and Samsung
Heavy Industries Co., the world's second- and third-largest
shipyards, are also investing to build ship structures in China.
Shares of STX Shipbuilding gained 3.2 percent in Seoul to
close at 13,000 won. The stock has risen 42 percent this year,
compared with a 1.5 percent fall in the benchmark Kospi index.
STX Corp. shares advanced 1.3 percent to 11,800 won.

Shanghai to be world's largest shipbuilding base

The first phase of the Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Base has been finished
and is already in operation on Changxing Island, Shanghai. Built by the China
State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), it has three production lines and four
boatyards capable of holding 300,000-ton ships. Almost unparalleled in the
world, it is the biggest shipbuilding project ever to be undertaken in China.
Shanghai has the potential to be the world's largest shipbuilding base.

Dubbed "Project Hope", the Changxing Shipbuilding Base will accelerate the
development of China's shipbuilding industry. It includes seven large boatyards
and will have the capacity to manufacture 8-million-ton ships by 2015. This will
help Shanghai to become the biggest shipbuilding location in the world.

The base has received US$2.67 billion worth of orders for 38 ships weighing 6
million tons, projects that will keep it busy until 2010.

Greece is putting more orders in.
By Paul Tugwell
Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Greece's Callimanopoulos Group, a
closely-held shipping company, ordered six oil tankers for
around $400 million from China's New Times Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.
Three of the vessels each has a capacity of 163,000
deadweight tons, and the remainder can carry 114,000 deadweight
tons each, the Piraeus-based company's unit Marine Management
Services said in an e-mailed statement today.
The tankers, which are due to be delivered between the
second-half of 2009 and the first-half of 2010, represent the
biggest single order ever placed with New Times, Marine
Management said. The order underlines the Callimanopoulos
Group's intent to re-establish a significant presence in the
tanker sector, the company said.
The company had previously requested three tankers from the
same shipyard which are expected to be delivered next year.
Callimanopoulos had also ordered nine so-called offshore
vessels in China for its Toisa Ltd. offshore unit. Four of these
ships, which typically can support offshore construction
projects or oil rigs, have been delivered and the remainder will
arrive between now and early 2007, the company said.

well, the South Koreans still are ruling the shipbuilding industry, but China is slowly catching up.
Jan. 5, 2007 (China Knowledge) - Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. built 3.11
million deadweight-tons (DWT) of ships last year, making it the world's
eighth-largest shipyard.

It was the first time a Chinese shipbuilder has surpassed the 3 million DWT
output mark and joined the world's top 10 shipbuilding league table by output.

The shipbuilder recorded a profit of RMB 1 billion in 2006, thanks to increased
spending on production technology and innovation, which offset the rising costs
associated with high steel and other material prices, the company said. It also
has orders for more than 80 ships, totaling 14 million DWT and valued at about
US$5 billion.

China is now the world's third-biggest shipbuilder by output after Japan and
South Korea. It built about 12 million DWT of ships in 2005, and has set the
target of becoming the world's top shipyard by 2015, when the country is
expected to build 24 million DWT of ships a year.

well, some more news on the shipbuilding industry, as said, China had almost 20% of the market last year in terms of dwt, they also got 24% of new orders.
BEIJING, Jan 30, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The output of China's shipbuilding
industry reached a record 14.52 million dwt in 2006, making up close to
one-fifth of the global total for the same year, according to official
statistics.

The Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (CSTIND)
announced on Tuesday that the output of 2006 was 20 percent higher than that of
the previous year.

According to the CSTIND, China's top two shipbuilding giants, the China State
Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation
(CSIC), reported annual output of 6.02 million dwt and 2.67 million dwt
respectively. The rest of the market was covered by local shipbuilding
companies.

China's shipbuilding companies received new orders totaling 42.51 million dwt
last year, bringing the total ship orders to 68.72 million dwt, or 24 percent of
the global total.

Last year was the 12th consecutive year that China ranked as the third largest
shipbuilder in the world, following the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan. China
has narrowed the distance behind the ROK and Japan in output in the past two
years, according to the CSTIND.

China is expected to become the world's biggest shipbuilder by 2015, said Chen
Xiaojin, general manager of the CSSC.

Zhang Guangqin, chairman of the China Association of National Shipbuilding
Industry, said the output of large oil tankers accounted for 51 percent of
China's total shipbuilding output last year.
