HD is building 5 LNG ships. This kind of ship stores liquid natual gas at -163 degree. One ship worth 160m USD, very hard to build. Only Korea and Japan can build it before.

Now 3 ships are launched, the first one will complete in Nov.

not LNG, but TEU-ships.
Rachel Hou/Shanghai Daily news

A Shanghai shipbuilding company made a breakthrough in domestic shipbuilding industry by building the country’s biggest container ship yesterday.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group Corporation, built a container ship capable of carrying 8,530 20-foot containers, making China the fourth country in the world capable of creating such container ships after South Korea, Japan and Denmark.

With a loading capacity of 101,000 tons, the 334-meter-long ship only needs one helmsman and is equipped with four electricity generators.

It is one of the five 8,530-TEU-ships the company is building for China Shipping Container Lines Co. Ltd. The company will also build four such ships for Greek shipping company Costamare.

No, they are building LNG ships and TEU ships. TEU and LNG ships are totally different things. TEU="20-foot container" and LNG="liquid natural gas", these terms indicate what the ships hold. HD won the contract for Chinese national LNG import ship building.

Wanted to put this in the aviation thread but thought here is more appropriate.
I can see the navy will be very interested in such a craft.
I think USSR had a similar project sometimes called the 'Caspian Sea Monster' few years ago.

New low-altitude plane skims across water
By Miao Xiaojuan (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-11 13:54

A new low-altitude Wing-In-Ground aircraft (WIG), especially suitable for maritime transportation, has been developed by scientists from Tongji University.

The plane can fly as low as 0.5 to 5 meters from the ground, hitting speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. It has the capacity to bear weight of up to 4 tons on takeoff.

An artist's impression of the WIG aircraft.

"It's as safe as ships, although five or six times faster," said associate professor Xu Zhengyu, vice-president of the research team. "And it can carry much more weight than ordinary airplanes while costing half as much and using half as much fuel."

Xu said the plane could also be flown for military use and border control.

According to Li Jun, another member of the team: "Unlike slow-speed cargo ships and high-priced airplanes, it could become a first-rate vehicle for maritime transportation. And its low altitude can increase its safety factors. There won't be serious casualties even if it falls into the sea. Also, it could be a good vehicle for sightseeing among islands."

Tongji University is reportedly planning to develop a 50-seat WIG by 2013, with 200 prototypes capable of carrying 200 to 400 tons scheduled for 2016 or 2017.

Taking advantage of the aerodynamics of the ground effect, which adds extra lift when flying at very low altitudes, the aircraft can fly close to the water's surface. This cuts back at least one-third on fuel consumption, compared with standard airplanes of the same size, because the plane can benefit from air buoyancy.

The WIG has been listed as one of three types of aircraft given the green light in the general aviation field by the State Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense, Xu said.

"However, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has yet to confirm aviation regulations at such low altitudes, which may become a problem," Li added.

"We have a long way to go before it is launched into operation, but WIG will have a bright future without doubt," Li said.

During the first half of 2007 the chinese ship building industry has exceeded their korean and japanese rivals in cumulative orders (stock + new) for the first time.

Correspondingly China's shipyards have more than 100 million dwt of ships in their order books and will take the top spot as global number one producer already in 2008.

(Mindboggling numbers indeed...; without doubt a guy predicting back in 1997 that China would topple Japan and Korea as industry leaders within the next decade would have been sent directly to a cozy mental ward...:D)

With Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding reaching full capacity in 2010 and a new shipyard to be completed next year adjacent to the container facilities at ChangXing, China will be unmatched in sheer tonnage production capacity. There seems little doubt that China will be the shipbuilder to the world in a rather short time, and this may immensely increase its influence in world trade (which is already staggering).

A report of a new 7 axis precision machine from Wuhan Heavy.
Apparently, they say this is a development of strategic significance. Other reports say this will enable China to build propellers for 300k tons sized tanker & 10K TEUs sized container ships.

China Passes South Korea in 2007 in New Ship Orders (Update2)
By Lee Spears

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- China surpassed South Korea to become the world's biggest shipbuilder by new orders in 2007, according to data compiled by Clarkson Plc, the world's largest shipbroker.

Chinese shipbuilders booked orders for 103.6 million deadweight tons of ships, compared with South Korea's 94.8 million, according to data from London-based Clarksons.

Shipyards in China booked orders at historically high prices last year, more than tripling order backlogs at the nation's shipyards. Demand for vessels to carry Chinese imports of raw materials and exports of consumer goods is fueling earnings growth at shipbuilders including China State Shipbuilding Co., the nation's biggest.

The nation remained behind South Korea in new orders measured by compensated gross tons. Deadweight tonnage measures a finished ship's carrying capacity and doesn't reflect the cost of building a vessel or its sale price. Compensated gross tonnage is a measure that accounts for ship size and the time required and materials used for production.

China booked 29.2 million gross compensated tons of new orders last year, compared with South Korea's 32 million, Clarkson said.

Surging orders helped China's order backlog more than triple to 51 million compensated gross tons as South Korea's backlog doubled to 64.5 million compensated gross tons, according to Clarkson.

Japan booked about 20 percent as many new orders as China and South Korea, Clarkson said. IHI Corp., Japan's third-biggest heavy-machinery maker, today said it's in talks with JFE Holdings Inc., the nation's second-biggest steelmaker, to create the biggest Japanese shipbuilder to compete against Asian rivals.
