It looks to be the same mast as used on the type 054A, but because the corvette is around 2000 tonnes the mast looks big on the ship.

the Thales radar is actually for navigation only.

No. The navigation radar is from Kelvin Hughes, from the UK.

As said by Bltizo (and in the article), the Thales Smart-s Mk2 is a modern multi function radar sold both for upgrade and new built ships.

By 2025 displacement of PLAN surface combatants should reach 490-600k tons, representing a 65-100% increase over 2014 level of 299k. Underlying assumptions below. By way of comparison, using the same criteria US Navy displaces 815k, Japanese Navy 251k, and Indian Navy 132k. Of these only India's Navy should grow significantly over coming years, increasing to ~200k by 2025.

Inductions to 2025
1x Type 052C
11x Type 052D
6x Type 054A
8-16x Type 054B
4-8x Type 055
45-60x Type 056

Retirements to 2025
6x Type 053H1
6x Type 053H1G
1x Type 053H2
4x Type 053H2G
4x Type 051D
2x Type 051DT
1x Type 051G1
1x Type 051G2
2x Type 052

Such an evolution leaves oldest frigates in service as 10 x Type 053H3s, oldest commissioned in 1998; and oldest destroyers in service 1x 051B commissioned 1999, and 2x Sovremenney commissioned 1999/2000.

Note that although there is indeed rapid growth from 2010-2014 period onwards, the graph overstates the real extent of this by including Type 056 Corvettes whilst not including their sub-1k displacement predecessors e.g. Type 037.

Displacement could be deceptive, evidenced by the fact Philippines' "new" frigates BRP Gregorio del Pilar and BRP Ramon Alacraz each displaces about 3,250 tons, but no one in his or her right mind would say they're more capable than PLAN's 053H2/3 FFGs at around 2,400 tons.

True... it's not great, but it's a better indicator than quantity.

Otherwise North Korea would have the strongest navy in the world :)

interesting note ROC is up there at #11. Taiwan is small when put next to china or japan but actually they have a very decent navy for a small country with 22million people. if we put ROC in the same category with small European nations/Canada/Australia they fit in their league. it's a pity that ROC navy don't get much action these days, they have the ships but no place to use them. it would be great if Beijing and Taipei can work up some kind of agreement so that ROC navy can do gulf of aden anti piracy missions. those kidds need to go out to the deep sea to stretch their legs.

It's interesting to note that the Chinese navy will probably surpass the Russian navy in terms of tonnage by next year.

2 more 052's, a few 054's and some corvette's should do it.
