It's a given, 14nm domestic chip mass production and SMEE SSA800 DUVL is yesterday news, now we focus on EUVL, SSMB ,The Mythical SMEE SSA900 22nm DUVL, SMIC localized production line, it's 7NM, 5NM and now 3NM program as the Mainland article below implied. @WTAN Sir I can't verify the news, BUT the hint is there, One is why Liang Mong Song is still retained (His counterpart Chang Shang Yi officially retired), second IF the news is to be believed he may had used the SSF (Shanghai Synchrotron facility) as a research base while waiting for the necessary EUVL equipment. Sir its all conjecture on my part and Liang Mong Song himself said that all research regarding 5NM and 3NM are finished and he need an EUVL machine to verify its research and maybe the SSF may had provided him that opportunity.

SMIC's 3nm chip made a breakthrough
Since TSMC was unable to supply Huawei, SMIC in mainland China has been regarded by many people as Huawei's greatest hope, because SMIC is also an excellent chip foundry. Although in terms of overall strength, there is still a certain gap between SMIC and TSMC, but it is commendable that SMIC is making progress.

So what is the current level of SMIC's chip process technology? How long will it take to catch up with TSMC?

According to the latest news, after two years of hard work, SMIC has achieved mass production of 14nm chips, and 7nm chips are also undergoing trial production, and it may not be long before they can be delivered to customers. Everyone knows that a lithography machine is a necessary equipment for the production of chips, and high-end chips such as 7nm, 5nm and 3nm need to use more advanced EUV lithography machines. But what makes people helpless is that the only manufacturer in the world that can make EUV lithography machines is ASML, and its annual output is only a few.

Coupled with the impact of related agreements and the attitude of the United States, ASML cannot freely ship to Chinese companies at all, and the lithography machine has therefore become a problem for domestic chips. Therefore, in this case, it is very difficult for SMIC to purchase EUV lithography machines unless the United States accepts ASML's shipment.

In fact, SMIC had previously wanted to spend US$150 million to purchase an EUV lithography machine from ASML, but it was unsuccessful and could only be left out in the end. Now after Jiang Shangyi took office, SMIC has launched another action, hoping to negotiate with ASML with Jiang Shangyi's help to win the opportunity to purchase EUV lithography machines.

So @ansy1968 , how many SMEE SSA800 DUVL have been produced. I thought SMEE need to iron out some wrinkles first before ready to be used by the customers
@antiterror13 Sir from @WTAN post 4 sets, from @Oldschool 3 sets all from 2021, these are all prototypes and from what I read had been verified and maybe certified. Mass production may begin this year, Sir I've no official document to prove my claimed BUT to digest all indication points to a successful program. Clearly pointing some news coming from Western publication, mass production of 14nm localized chips will be achieved this year, without a local DUVL which is a critical component, how could they achieved that?

I think the biggest hint for me was Huawei saying Kirin will be back in 2022~2023, they wouldn't have said that this clear. If there wasn't a domestic option soon.

@BlackWindMnt bro the introduction date of Hisilicon 14nm 3D chiplet, since officially SMIC can't supply Huawei BUT a JV FAB in Shenzhen might able to? Plus the Huawei Shanghai FAB in collaboration with ICRD that with produce 28nm and 22nm auto chips. Both involved Huawei and we know Huawei is under sanction. ;)

A couple of years ago, the well known SMEE Insider Havok mentioned that ICRD had a IC Research Lab based at the Shanghai Synchrotron. At the LAB, ICRD had a prototype EUVL and they were doing trials on IC production.
Back then no one really paid attention to this ICRD Lab and the EUVL prototype located there as people thought that the EUVL would use DPP or LPP.
But with the recent revelation that China was developing a EUVL using SSMB as the Light Source i finally realised some things.
The EUVL at the Shanghai Synchrotron was probably an early model China made SSMB Based EUVL.
ICRD and SMIC were probably using this EUVL equipment for trial production of ICs.
So yes, this equipment probably helped SMIC in the design of the 3nm and 5nm ICs.

China produced 359.4 billion ICs in 2021, up 33.3 per cent year on year, according to data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday. It marked a significant acceleration from 2020, when China’s IC output rose 16.2 per cent to 261.3 billion units.
Separately, China’s imports of ICs amounted to US$432 billion in 2021, a 23.6 per cent increase from the previous year, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs on Friday. China’s spending on imported semiconductors equals what the country spends on grain and crude oil combined.
In terms of volume, China imported 432.5 billion ICs in 2021, still larger than the country’s output.
