Huawei bets big on chip packaging to counter U.S. clampdown

China's Huawei Technologies is aggressively ramping up its chip packaging capabilities to lessen the impact of a U.S. clampdown that has cut the company's access to vital semiconductor production technologies, sources briefed on the matter told Nikkei Asia.

Chip packaging refers to the final step in semiconductor manufacturing before they are mounted onto print circuit boards and assembled into electronic devices. Compared to the manufacture of chips themselves, less of the relevant technology is controlled by American companies. Washington has cut off Huawei's access to advanced U.S. chipmaking technologies since 2019, citing national security concerns.

One example of Huawei's new focus is a recent collaboration with Quliang Electronics, a little-known chip packaging and testing supplier based in Fujian Province. Quliang is rapidly expanding its production capacity in the city of Quanzhou to help Huawei put its advanced chip assembly designs into production and trial some of the company's cutting-edge chip stacking and packaging technologies, four people familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia.

The Fujian government is among the most supportive of Huawei's ambition to beef up its chip packaging capabilities, the sources added, though the company is also looking for manufacturing partners in several other provinces.

The embattled tech giant has also accelerated efforts to hire experts from leading suppliers like ASE Technology Holding of Taiwan, the world's top chip packing and testing service provider, sources told Nikkei Asia. ASE declined to comment.

Partnerships with local tech giant are another strategy Huawei is pursuing. The company has teamed up with display champion BOE Technology Group to develop panel-level chip packaging technology, in which chips are assembled on display panel-like substrates, rather than on the usual wafer materials, people familiar with the matter said. among new and established industry players, such as Powertech Technology, the world's biggest memory chip packaging service provider.

Such moves are part of Huawei's ongoing push to improve its overall chip capabilities. In 2021 alone, the company's investment arms -- including Hubble Technology Investment Co. -- took or raised stakes in more than 45 domestic tech companies, Nikkei Asia analysis showed, more than double the figure in 2020. Some 70% of its investments last year were in semiconductor-related suppliers, ranging from chip developers, design tools to production equipment and materials.

A loss to Cymer is still a loss to ASML. Even though Cymer is headquartered in the US, it is a private company 100% owned by ASML. On the other hand KLA, LAM and AMAT are US publicly traded companies. I think the main leverage US has over ASML is the EUV patents currently used by ASML (owned by USG), rather than Cymer operations being based at US.
@huemens yup so true bro Funded by DARPA via Semantech consortium.

TSMC’s Arizona Culture Clash

By Alan Patterson 01.03.2022
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) faces challenges managing employees at its new fab in Arizona who are unaccustomed to the long work hours and management culture that in Taiwan have helped make the company the world’s largest chip foundry.

“The work culture in Taiwan is really different than in the U.S.,” said a person identified as a TSMC Arizona fab equipment engineer on Glassdoor, a website where current and former employees anonymously review companies. “TSMC will have to change to an eight-hour work day five days a week.”

To maximize profits, fab operators need to keep expensive and highly sensitive capital equipment running 24/7. To help prevent production halts resulting in billions of dollars of losses and scrapped silicon wafers, production engineers must monitor and tweak their equipment constantly. TSMC engineers remain on-call after ordinary working hours in the event of an emergency.

“The reality for people from Taiwan is that they are doing even more than 12-hour days often,” said the American engineer on Glassdoor. “There’s also the night shifts and weekend shifts on duty and/or on call.”

This is very huge and I think that's why they are confident of a stronger 2022/23 comeback . Sanctions that were meant to kill Huawei just made her probably the most resilient tech firm in the world with an end to end control of her supply chain .

The US swung the big club and it hasnt worked .What other nuclear option do they have ,ban Huawei from trading in dollars ?

@Topazchen Huawei will not be the first, others are waiting in the wings. What Trump and the US had done by banning and trying to destroy Huawei it awakens the Chinese Spirit ,The illusion about America and that working hard, we can be accepted and be equal are quashed and broken. I felt it and I know others felt it too, I'm not even born in China.....lol That is how I feel the anger inside me that I decided to join this forum , be apart of an amazing community and got educated regarding Chinese IC.

This is not directly related but interesting (also apparently the leaker is Chinese)

I had mentioned previously that it would be important that Huawei try their best to hang onto their HiSilicon CPU team since they have already shown promise. Even though they are not custom designing the entire CPU, the integration of the logic is still pretty difficult. After all this time (10 years), it seems that Samsung is still having issues.

Chip makers are threatening to scrap future US factories without generous tax breaks

Semiconductor manufacturing is pretty capital intensive and prone to boom bust cycles, IC manufacturers want to make sure that if things go well they will reap the benefits but if things go wrong Uncle Sam will pay the bills.
No problem. Uncle Sam controls the printer.
