One thing that truly annoys me is the @#$%^$#$% bloatware that comes pre installed with cell phones. If Huawei could supply a barebone efficient, quick OS, WITHOUT BLOATWARE, I am pretty sure many people would choose Harmony OS and Huawei just for that.

If Harmony OS proves to be really faster than Android, and considering that it should be able to communicate with many different things, like cars, TVs, IOTs, etc... it could be a killer OS.

In other words, if it is BETTER than Android, I can imagine all cellphone manufacturers will eagerly adopt that IOS in China to start with and from there the sky is the limit.

The problem lies into that little word BETTER.

If it is just all right, then chances are not many people will be willing to switch.

Considering the top quality of Huawei`s best phones, I don`t think they will make a medium quality IOS.

I am eagerly awaiting to see exactly how Harmony OS performs.

Hope it is a killer IOS.

Either way, it will be certainly more secure than the current Android setup.

I think it was best described as:
1. In current Android OS, you have a key to the house. Once you got in you can access every room.
2. With Harmony OS utilizing mini-kernel, you have a key to the house, but each room have its separate key.

By optimizing the and securing the hardware, it will likely run faster than vanilla Android.

I've always seen bloatware as a response to less proficient, older users. So perhaps, as the general audience becomes more tech savvy and adept, general end user will be more inclined to custom tailor their user experience. It also requires the hardware maker to have more confidence in their offering. After all, if you know your got the hottest killer app, it really doesn't matter if the app is pre-installed or not, the user will get it through the app store.

I've always seen bloatware as a response to less proficient, older users.
Bloatware also serves to have your users have a consistent experience with the phone when using common functions

E.g they need a common email app (Gmail, Outlook etc), Internet Browser (Chrome, Safari etc), Telephone and Messaging apps, Maps, social media, streaming services etc

So you see, for the "casual" users you need to provide them a complete package of services so when they first open their mobile they will have everything they need already installed and ready to go

Ofc this "bloatware" should be removable but you know corps and their shenanigans..

This has become personal to him after they got his daughter. Watch as this guy dedicates all his life and passion to making Huawei such a dominant company that it will force the US to bow ala Japanese style...

Still all speculations. I've been looking forward to HarmonyOS myself, but I'm still sceptical that many Chinese smartphone makers other than HUAWEI will adopt HarmonyOS, unless they too are banned from including Google apps. I'm not even convinced if HUAWEI would continue to stick to HarmonyOS if Google is again allowed to work with HUAWEI. Because they sell globally and they want to sell Google-compatible smartphones for success. Honor, which is now separated from HUAWEI, is planning to launch new smartphones with Google services based on Android.
It's not about Android itself but the Google apps that matter. Personally I don't use and don't want Google's services but seems most other people are different and can't live without Google.
They could adopt the two OS separately - a HarmonyOS version for the Chinese market and an Android version for the global market but it must be too demanding for companies to develope two different customized software versions.

There is only two cell phone O/S in the world in wide usage, and if Huawei has a chance to create a third one globally, then they will try to do it.

I thought I read that Harmony O/S was already half the size of iOS because Google is banned in China. That is more than enough critical mass for Huawei to go out on it own to try to develop their Harmony OS.

What other Chinese phone companies will do will be very interesting.

President Trump set the bar, anyone and everyone from China could be banned at a moment's notice.

Long term, all these Chinese phone companies are branching out into other areas of business. It would make sense to diversify the OS too.

It take SMEE years to build the 90nm Lithograph machine because they were held up by the optic since no one has the skill to manufacture precision lens. But once you do it it is easier to build the next iteration. Like everything with China to manufacture a product they have to first built machine to manufacture the product because they can't buy the machine. So this news is very significant

Very interesting and glad that developments also occurred on tooling and hopefully materials as well. I hope that this upstream development will also help other industries outside semicon as well.
