Lets decompose this logically. EUVL is essentially 2 major components. 1) Light source 2) Mirrors for collecting and focusing light

1) Light source --> A high power laser inside a vacuum that is timed to hit tin to produce EUV light.

2) Mirrors --> Same as the ones used in space telescopes

Im pretty sure China has all the components necessary to build a prototype EUV machine. Given that China has plenty of experience with direct energy weapons and space Telescopes, etc.

In my opinion, the problem isn't the components, its a matter of combining the components together and perfecting it. Lithography is challenging because you need to have minimal variation in what your trying to print.

Will it take 10 yrs? I doubt it. They aren't starting from scratch.

Remember it took ASML 10 yrs to perfect EUV. But it doesn't mean anything. First of all, ASML as a private company is beholden to financial planning. Investors are short sighted and always want to milk current technology for short term returns. I doubt they were throwing the kitchen sink at EUV. There were also no demand until 7nm. TSMC wanted to do everything in its power to milk the 193nm excimer laser machines until they couldn't anymore before upgrading to EUV.

Plus, europeans work 10-4 days, they aren't desperate for a EUV breakthrough.

China on the other IS throwing the kitchen sink at EUV. its not just one company or institution, essentially anyone in the entire country of 1.5 billion people who has any expertise in the components listed are tasked to work on this project. Huawei is working 24 hours 7 days a week. I imagine the same for the project.

Lastly, China benefits from the fact that many of the people who work at ASML are from China. So there is a good chance a lot of data is being leaked.

You are short changing the Dutch and ASML. The Dutch, like the Germans are a very industrious people. Their reputation as master craftsman dates back centuries. If ASML was interested in short term financial gains, then they literally choose the worst possible field for making a quick buck. If it was so easy as many people suggest, then why are there nobody else doing it? Sure, with the amount of resources China has and is willing to devote to this field, China probably will be able to have a comparable commercially viable EUV machine within 10 years, but I don't see it happening in less than 5 years time.

Easier to build the tech than to make it a good business.

Chinese EDA Software Startup X-EPIC Raises RMB100 Million

X-EPIC, a Nanjing city-based startup aimed at building up China’s own EDA (Electronic Design Automation) industrial software technology, received a RMB100 million Pre-A round of financing, led by China V Fund (Yuhui Capital), with Dashu Evergreen and Zhen Fund participating in the investment.

X-EPIC founder Wang Libin said that after this round of financing, the company will accelerate the global deployment of R&D forces and breakthroughs in integration with cutting-edge technologies, develop EDA verification products and systems required for chip design, and improve China’s EDA industry chain.

EDA, as the key technology of integrated circuit industry innovation and the indispensable core industrial software for designing and manufacturing chips, is the core technology urgently in need of independent innovation in China, as Chinese semiconductor companies are banned from accessing such technology from foreign companies under the current US regulation.

The demand for chips has surged with the advent of the digital economy era. The total output value of the integrated circuit industry in 2025 is conservatively estimated to exceed RMB2 trillion yuan.
Therefore, the domestic EDA market has great room for development.

At present, three EDA giants, mainly Synopsys, Cadence and Mentor, occupy almost 70% of the global market share, and nearly 90% of the Chinese market.

Because the chip design process is extremely complicated, the development of sophisticated industrial-grade software such as EDA must have an EDA talent team that is proficient in microelectronics and computers, but also involves knowledge of mathematics and physics. It also requires core R&D members to accumulate considerable time for development and feedback.

Due to the shortage of talents in the industry, this has directly led to the fact that EDA, a key semiconductor technology, has not yet appeared in the country to have a competitive advantage with the three giants.

Founder and chairman Wang Libin said that the company’s goal is to break through existing technical barriers, develop full-process EDA verification tools and systems, and launch products and products including hardware simulators, FPGA prototype verification, formal verification, intelligent verification, and logic simulation.

Although the company was just established in March 2020, the core members are all from international leading EDA, integrated circuit design, software and artificial intelligence companies with an average of more than 20 years of experience.

Wang Libin said that the traditional EDA tools have been developed for many years, but the underlying architecture has not changed. The algorithm is also an earlier algorithm, and various new functions are constantly superimposed to cause great redundancy.

Compared with traditional EDA companies, the advantage of X-EPIC lies in the fact that the team can start R&D and innovate on EDA based on classic verification experience and technology, and on the basis of the most advanced software engineering methodology and high-performance hardware architecture, integrate the latest artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing and other cutting-edge technologies, design new software system architecture and algorithms, and create a new generation of EDA software and systems facing the future.

X-EPIC announced the launch of the open source EDA ecological project in August, and launched China’s first open source EDA technology community: EDAgit.com in September.

In this community, its technical team has successively launched commercial-level open source EDA verification products based on classic verification methodology and technology.

It is understood that the company has launched EpicSim and is currently the world’s fastest open source digital simulator. Regarding the performance of EpicSim, Wang Libin said that based on the understanding and research of the characteristics of sequential circuits, the team optimized iVerilog to make it more than 2 times the performance improvement in RTL design, and enriched Verilog language support greatly improves iVerilog’s adaptability to scenarios.

While optimizing and transforming iVerilog, the team also repaired and calibrated the realization of its simulation accuracy, so that the results were consistent with the existing commercial software, thereby improving the verification efficiency of the chip design.

At the same time, in terms of ease of use, practicability, and stability, X-EPIC provides professional technical support for its open source EDA products, so that more IC verification engineers with technical ideals can truly apply the products to project development.

Open source EDA lowers the threshold for EDA R&D and innovation, encourages and trains more industry professionals to join EDA technology R&D, and promotes industrial development.

In the future, X-EPIC will successively launch open source products in the open source community, and at the same time deploy global R&D forces to accelerate the launch of new-generation EDA verification products and platforms.

again via xyz I guess they learn from mistake this time around they have the gov support and more talent and better technical base
More than 20 years ago, China took a shortcut on EDA software-directly adopting foreign EDA tools. However, the painful reality tells us that we must make up for the lessons that we have missed. In the future, the development of domestic EDA will have to be down-to-earth and step by step. At the same time, only with the necessary financial and policy support from the state, more domestic EDA companies, including Guowei Sierxin, can play their unlimited potential and finally realize a real domestic substitution.

Regarding the future development strategy, National Micro Group hopes to adopt multiple methods of investment mergers and acquisitions, self-research and industry-university-research cooperation in parallel to establish a domestic EDA industry platform

t of domestic EDA was tortuous and slow. Due to various factors, the gap with foreign EDA giants has widened. However, in the context of the country's vigorous development of the semiconductor industry in the past two years, EDA has begun to gain more and more attention. As a necessary and most important software tool in IC design, it is also known as the "mother of chips."

The EDA tool is a software cluster composed of "multi-tools". Although many local EDA companies have achieved breakthroughs in some tools, they still need more technology accumulation in a complete and available full-process tool chain. It will not be completed in a short time. At present, Guowei Sierxin is committed to creating EDA full-process solutions.

EDA stands for electronic design automation. It is an important tool for chip design and the core support at the bottom of the entire electronics industry. The current international situation is forcing the development of the domestic EDA industry, and national policies and funds are also tilting towards the EDA industry. It is no exaggeration to say that the Chinese semiconductor industry is looking forward to the rise of a domestic EDA industry platform.

Dr. Zhang Yan, deputy general manager of the EDA Division of China Micro Group, said that the company has formulated a medium- and long-term development strategy for three to ten years. In 1993, China Micro Group focused on security chips and their application fields, and was the first in China’s semiconductor industry. Riding the wind and waves in the golden decade, it was successfully listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2016. From undertaking the national 01 special project in 2018, to the fact that China National Micro Group can provide a mature EDA system for China's integrated circuit industry, and compete with the international EDA giants in the market, China Micro Group has very clear and precise measures at every step during this period. Clear deployment.

Call for strengthening school-enterprise cooperation

EDA is an interdisciplinary industry that requires knowledge reserves in mathematics, computers, electronics, physics, etc. Therefore, Zhang Yan entered the Department of Physics of Zhejiang University in 1986 and transferred to microelectronics in 1993. In 1994, he began to study for a doctorate in computer science at Harbin Institute of Technology, and finally received a doctorate in the direction of EDA to cultivate the EDA industry. A solid foundation has been laid for more than 20 years.

After graduating from his PhD, he worked in the IC design industry for 6 years. Zhang Yan returned to academia in early 2004 to engage in research on EDA/IC design. At that time, Dr. Zhang Yan, who was only 35 years old, has become a professor at the Shenzhen Graduate School of Harbin Institute of Technology.

Regarding the above-mentioned work experience, Dr. Zhang Yan said: “Half of my R&D work is in the EDA direction and half in the IC design direction. Therefore, my advantage is obvious, that is, I can better understand the needs of EDA design and make a real application for customers. product."

At the end of 2019, Dr. Zhang Yan joined the industry again and joined China Micro Group.

When talking about why he joined the National Micro Group, Dr. Zhang Yan said that in 2018, the National Micro Group undertook a major national science and technology project "Development and Application of EDA System for the Whole Process of Chip Design", which is a national EDA platform. Joining the National Micro Group can contribute to the country's EDA business and realize its own value.

From academia to industry, Dr. Zhang Yan knows the importance of school-enterprise cooperation to the EDA industry. Dr. Zhang Yan pointed out that since EDA is a basic industrial software in the electronics industry, its core generally includes some mathematical algorithms. Therefore, EDA companies need to cooperate with universities to solve some basic algorithm research and development cycle long and difficult problems.

Currently, domestic EDA companies are actively cooperating with universities. Take National Micro Group as an example. In March 2019, it established Xidian National Microelectronics EDA Research Institute with Xidian University. In August 2020, it established an EDA joint laboratory with Southeast University. It also cooperated with Tsinghua University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Beijing University, Central South University, Nanchang University and other universities cooperate in EDA projects.

Of course, it is not easy to achieve school-enterprise linkage. Dr. Zhang Yan emphasized that to strengthen school-enterprise cooperation, we must take the specific needs of EDA companies as the starting point and give play to their respective strengths. For example, colleges and universities focus on basic algorithm research, and EDA companies solve key problems through engineering projects to complete industry requirements. Only in this way can EDA companies and universities form a benign interaction.

Key EDA tools have broken through

Currently, Dr. Zhang Yan mainly develops digital integrated circuit design formal verification EDA and gate-level simulation EDA.

According to Dr. Zhang Yan, EDA tools are generally divided into design implementation tools and verification simulation tools. Although the chip design process is more complicated and involves many EDA tools, each EDA tool is very important in the chip design process. In order to ensure the smooth listing of the chip, it is necessary to ensure that all designs are implemented and verified and simulated within a certain period of time. The results meet the design requirements.

In recent years, under the background of the country's vigorous development of the semiconductor industry, EDA technology, which is the basis of IC design, has received increasing attention. Under this circumstance, the domestic EDA industry has begun to enter the fast lane of development, and it has also ushered in a situation of "a hundred flowers blooming". According to data, there are already 18 EDA companies in China including Guowei Sierxin and Hongxin Micronano. Grow up.

Obviously, the large number and small scale of domestic EDA companies will face the waste of resources and the relatively scattered industrial development, which is not conducive to the long-term development of the EDA industry.

In response, Dr. Zhang Yan said that the country needs to establish an EDA industry alliance. Under the guidance of relevant government departments, core enterprises will take the lead in formulating and coordinating the domestic EDA R&D route, avoid repeated competition, and encourage breakthroughs in key EDA tools that are not available in the country. . At the same time, EDA needs to cooperate fully with all aspects of the industrial chain such as chip design, manufacturing, packaging and testing, so that the entire chip industry ecology can achieve balanced and healthy development.

In addition, the National Micro Group also hopes to integrate the EDA industry through government, industry promotion or its own mergers and acquisitions, reduce resource waste, strengthen industrial coordination, and better serve the integrated circuit industry.

In fact, the National Micro Group is making rapid progress in the development of EDA tools. The Group will solve the problem of domestic substitution on the basis of the 01 special project it undertakes, and will also bring EDA tools to the market as soon as possible to meet domestic customer needs.

"For domestic EDA tools, only by having enough users, fully competing in the market, and forming positive feedback from the market and R&D, is the breakthrough for domestic EDA tools." Dr. Zhang Yan said, I believe that China Micro Group will soon There are more EDA tools successfully introduced to the market, and we hope to have some innovations and make some features. Only by truly achieving the forefront of the industry can China Micro Group gain a foothold in the EDA industry.

Establish domestic EDA industry platform

Today, Sino-US trade frictions are still continuing, and no one can predict the future, but history has proven that the idea of “buying is worse than making” is wrong, and a breakthrough must be made in domestic EDA tools.

Dr. Zhang Yan said that the country is vigorously supporting the development of the EDA industry, which is an opportunity currently faced by China Micro Group and all domestic EDA tools. Domestic EDA companies need to quickly develop advantageous EDA tools with the support of existing technology and funds to seize the market as soon as possible.

Dr. Zhang Yan believes that only when domestic EDA companies have a dominant position in market competition and have a certain market scale can encourage EDA companies to continue to research and develop, and at the same time, they can compete in the international EDA market. Big breakthrough.

For latecomers in the industry, the patent barriers built by international giants are often a major problem in their growth. In this regard, Dr. Zhang Yan said: "We will consider patent issues in our layout and R&D. We need better innovation to bypass the patent barriers established by our peers. At the same time, we will also seize some cutting-edge patented technologies."

It is worth noting that Dr. Zhang Yan pointed out that the success of domestic EDA tools depends not only on their own technology, capital and market capabilities, but also on the international environment.

For example, can a domestic EDA tool enter the market after spending enough money and forming a certain technological advantage? One situation is that its technological advantages have reached the forefront of the industry and can directly compete with the world's leading EDA companies. This situation is the best, but it is also very difficult. Another situation is that it has certain technical advantages and can replace foreign EDA products to a certain extent.

"If foreign countries are completely decoupled from us in this technical field, then the development of this domestic EDA will be forced. If foreign countries have not completely decoupled from us in this technical field, or first decoupled, and will not decouple after a period of time, This will be a serious blow to the development of this domestic EDA, and even lead to its failure.” Dr. Zhang Yan believes that the dilemma of technology and capital can be solved by companies, but it is for malicious international competition. However, attention and defensive measures need to be taken from the national level.

Call on the government to strengthen and guide industrial ecological construction

In the development process of domestic EDA, the government’s leading participation and formulation of supporting policies are particularly important. Only through policy coordination can design companies and manufacturers dare to use and multi-use domestic EDA, and all links of the domestic semiconductor industry chain will form a good interaction and promote each other. Only when China's EDA industry can develop and enter a virtuous circle.

Regarding the future development strategy, China Micro Group hopes to adopt multiple methods of investment mergers and acquisitions, self-research and industry-university-research cooperation to establish a domestic EDA industry platform. Within five years, a complete set of digital design EDA tool chains will be polished and brought to the market. Ten years later, they will be able to fully compete with the world's first-class EDA manufacturers in the market.

与非网,eefocus.com
15-18 minutes

Only time can tell, how about we place bets on a timeline?

Semiconductor manufacturing has some similarities with aircraft engine manufacturing. In both cases, it can be extremely difficult and time consuming to go from understanding the science and being able to build a prototype in the lab to having a viable manufacturing process for mass production. Both cases involve many cycles of trial and error and refinement. A good example from aircraft engine manufacturing would be the single-crystal engine blades, where even after successful prototypes can be made in labs, it still takes many years to develop a mass manufacturing process that can produce acceptable yields. Semiconductor manufacturers face the exact same issue, which is how to refine the manufacturing process so that the yields are commercially viable. It is no coincidence that while China has managed to catch up to the rest of the world in so many different fields, aero engines and semiconductors are the two main fields that China is still lagging behind in.
