Found the original higher-res images, plus a video of the power car in action. It was seen at CRRC Dalian's new factory in Lushun. This will be the first high-speed centralized power trainset to be put into operation since 2003 when the China Star train was retired.

Sorry, do you mean high speed trains that aren’t EMUs but instead use power cars?

Trainsets can refer to multiple units and formations with power cars.
I’m just curious how this is the “first since China star”, I’m assuming that means first high speed set that uses power cars since China star, correct? Since all the others have been EMUs.

Yes. The CR200Js don't count since their top operating speed is 160 km/h.

What’s the reasoning behind adopting such a model?
Probably to fill the 200 km/h role where operating 250 km/h EMUs isn't viable option in the long run, or railway lines that are rated above 160 km/h but below 250 km/h.

Look like CRRC bungled the SEPTA contract for bi-level cars. Slow delivery, shoddy workmanship, etc. not a good look for a company which has had other issues with breaking out of China.

The train cars were supposed to be built in Massachusetts.

The other high bidder was Bombardier, maybe they can go back to them… oh right…
