How was it getting tickets? From what I understand it isn’t easy being a foreigner, you need your passport and a separate line at the station, and you can’t use ticket machines. Have things changed?
As @Staedler mentioned, the process is very easy these days. Get the 12306 app where you can save your details and you'll be able to book tickets very quickly and conveniently. A thing to bear in mind is that 12306 only offers tickets 14 days in advance of the journey where some travel agencies like Ctrip and Tongcheng will offer tickets further out and attempt to auto-buy it when they become available

The app offers ID verification as a built-in option now, you submit a photo and it should be approved pretty quickly

Boarding is indeed still via the manual queue, they have a passport scanner which works 80% of the time (otherwise staff enter your passport number manually). At smaller stations the station staff might pre-check the manual queue before they open the gates and allow the entire line to go through once you can board, saving a lot of time. When you arrive at your destination, you're able to exit through the auto gates with the 12306 app's QR code so you don't need to go to the manual queue there

I would expect that due to higher growth rate in china, area around major high speed rail station would get built out quickly. But it does not seem to be true, I was taking train in shenzhen north and guangzhou south, the are around is not as built out as I would like.

I was in shin aomori and shin Hakodate and the are around has nothing unlike shin osaka.

What is the 12306 app called? Is it available on iOS? The only one I can see has terrible one star reviews, with a blue background and red CR logo.
Edit* most of the reviews come from citizens complaining that it only accepts foreign passports.

I should note that one issue with the app is that it doesn’t take into account any transfers you may be able to take in order to get a cheaper overall ticket for the same speed. Trip.com does do this however.

China's ultra-high speed train full-scale superconducting electric suspension test has been successful, with a future target speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour

According to CASIC, its high-speed flier surpassed previous records using full-scale test line to travel 2km with stable levitation

The result is a ‘significant breakthrough’ for the project, which is aiming for speeds of up to 1,000km per hour

on January 31 that according to the "High Speed Speed Car" public account, on January 29, 2024, the China Academy of Aerospace Science and Industry took the lead in successfully completing the ultra-high speed speed test base in Yanggao County, Datong City, Shanxi Province. Full-scale superconducting electric levitation test of low-vacuum pipeline maglev transportation system (referred to as "high-speed speed train") .

According to reports, this test used a super navigation vehicle to achieve stable levitation on the full-scale test line.

This test verified key technologies such as coupling dynamics analysis and control of the "vehicle-pipe-line" complex system, stable suspension of large-mass supernavigation vehicles, high-power traction transmission, and full-process safety collaborative control, refreshing the domestic full-scale supercar. The highest navigation speed of conductive electric suspension has improved the overall technical maturity of the system and laid a solid technical foundation for subsequent higher-speed tests of high-speed flying cars and the construction of a national three-dimensional transportation network.

She Shanxi Provincial Laboratory of High-speed Speeding Vehicles was unveiled on May 24, 2021. The project was approved in September and construction will officially start in April 2022. The project is located in Yanggao County, Datong City. The line is 2 kilometers long and the starting point is 500 meters west of Yanggao South Station .

The main project of the first phase of the high-speed flying car test line was completed in November 2023. It is the main project of the full-scale ultra-high-speed low-vacuum pipeline maglev transportation system test line with the longest distance and the largest scale under construction in the world.

According to official reports, high-speed flying cars can be used for transportation between mega-city clusters in the future, with speeds reaching 1,000 kilometers per hour . In other words, its speed will be faster than ordinary civil aviation aircraft (IT House Note: General passenger aircraft can reach 800~900 kilometers per hour), and even close to the speed of a bullet when it comes out of the barrel.
