Well, I imagine that ZKZM is only really building the laser part of the ZKZM 500; hence the need to find a partner for production.
If that is the case (likely so), the final product (the rifle) can not be named after its component no matter how critical that component is. Just like a desktop PC from Apple is called "iMac 27" instead of "Intel i7 27".

It still needs a designation, even if only for record keeping purposes, before mass production, I'm sure they could change the name afterwards.

Who said it is to be used in "crowd control"? Must be SCMP, the scare scaremonger, the "I want to sell fear to get paid".

This is why I hate any MSM, they basically do this loop:
"A" created something,
According to me, "A" is going to use it to do evil.
Therefor, "A" is evil and must be stopped.

I created the same thing,
According to me, I never do evil.
Therefor, I am angel.

I thought this forum had a good thorough discussion not too long ago about the reliability/unreliability of various sources for Chinese military news and SCMP is squarely in the unreliable column. Why is anyone still posting articles from SCMP and why are so many posters paying it any attention at all!!!???

They have released official footage.

Looks legit.

Legit given:
- Distance on the rooftop between rifle and target to be no more than 200 feet, given it was apparently operated without the gigantic lens attachment shown in one of the promotional photos.
- Unknown duration of laser on target before targets light on fire.
- Unknown nature of the various targets' material that were lit on fire.
- Unknown whether the rifle is self-contained or connected to other equipment.
- We'll take their word for it but frankly the video doesn't even capture enough to show undeniably that the rifle was what set anything on fire.
