Chinese Grenade Launcher II

I still think something in the dimension of MGL is the ideal size and firepower for a portable grenade launcher, LG5 simply too long and too large, such dimension would makes sense if it's a anti-materiel rifle, but grenade launcher is more of an area effect weapon.

It can still take on the role of sniper rifle -- to take out another sniper.

Yeah but at the same time one could be located as well from other enemy sniper or recon team to call in fire support because of the smoke and noise a grenade launcher makes. It's not a high caliber precision weapon.

Unless the grenade is laser-guided and can self-steered towards the target, no matter what you call it it's still an area-effect weapon, not precision tool as a proper sniper rifle would be.

Pretty much that's because PLA still haven't adopt a good 'n proper sniper rifle (CS/LR4 or CS/LR5 would be a much more suitable tool), lack of proper sniper vocation training, and not adopted counter-sniper indirect fire support measures, that they'd cook up with some nonsense such as that.

Even with the kind of front-loading grenades as they're now using with the grenade launcher module on the QSZ-95-1, they can still mate it with a MGL-style portable launcher, Russia's RG-6 shows that it can be done.

The LG-5/QLU-11 is a payload rifle like the Barret XM-109 and its main role is anti-material use, not anti-personell use.

Whatever its precision/non-precision is, it would still be enough to take out enemy material targets and light vehicles at extended ranges etc. The laser rangefinder and FCS optics would help to increase its efficiency at longer ranges.

The magazine scan which contained these images also showed that the main grenades for this weapon are HE-DP, further confirming its anti-material use.

As said before, HE-DP is pretty useful for taking out light armored vehicles as well, as the integrated shaped charge should be enough to punch through some dozen mm steel.

So the QLU-11 is able to load programmable fuse munitions, which makes sense, given its relatively large FCS apparatus.

I'm not sure if the discussion prior to this has suggested this weapon is meant to replace sniper rifles, but I think this is better seen as a super long range XM-25 air burst grenade launcher. Among its roles sure, is anti sniper, but more generally it gives squads precision smart air burst grenades -- the equivalent of miniature artillery -- effective against targets behind cover.

Also, @mwyrum, I think the PLA has begun adopting CS/LR4
