Second most expensive metal, more than gold, palladium and platinum.

Nah. Rhenium is way more expensive. In comparison Iridium is cheap.

The actual costs of the metal used in jet engines at the elemental level is pretty trivial relative to the build price of a multimillion dollar turbojet. The bulk of the material will still be steel, titanium or ceramics while the more exotic elements alloyed in them are measured in single digit percent or even at parts-per-million levels. It’s the processing(precision alloying, tempering, annealing, machining) of the metals/ceramics to create high precision parts that account for the bulk of the material costs in building jet engines.

But over the past decade I have seen ads by GE, RR and P&W that their engines use less rhenium.

The ZF850 turbojet from Jiangxi Zhongfa Tianxin Engine Technology Ltd. It will soon be used on the Cloud Shadow UCAV. Two pre-production samples have already been delivered, with four more to be delivered by year end 2020. Serial production will commence in 2021. The company is currently exhibiting the engine at the ongoing Nanchang Aviation Conference/Show.

A rare image of the actual engine.

ZF850 has a thrust of 10kN, with a service ceiling of 21km. It was further developed into ZF1000, with increased thrust and lifespan. ZF850/ZF1000 current powers the Wingloong-10, Skywing-3, and a certain Loyal Wingman type of UCAV.

hi, did this clip or anything show the possible specs for ZF1000? I wonder if they will develop a turbofan engine in this class.

Sorry, I don't have access to the clip, only the screen grabs, and I haven't found any specs for ZF1000/A.
