The problem with the scramjets is that the engine doesn't work from 0 velocity. You need to be at least at like Mach 2-3 or whatever or else the engine won't even work. So you at most will see scramjets used as the second stage engine in a two stage vehicle where the first stage is typically a rocket engine. This adds cost and complexity.

I know it is no replacement for turbofan. I'm just commenting on how it is easier than turbofans.

It’s not a direct comparison, turbofan is a technology that has developed for like 50 years, and for America lead China 10 years, it need China to have technology in 40 year’s standard

similarly, for hypersonic technology, in this case ramjet, a 30 years technology, say for China to lead America for 10 years, it required America to have 20 years of foundation

For us and China, the 10 year gap between each of the technologies are the same, also the difficulties, otherwise it won’t take 10 years to develop, so for these two countries with strong technology fundation, the challenge are roughly the same for both tech

but for other countries with weak tech in these two streams, this would of course create a bigger barrier for turbofan as it requires more fundamental knowledge

press conference that there are 24 types of aero-engines and gas turbines exhibited at this year's Airshow China Aviation Development, and the newly unveiled exhibits Among them, electric hybrid distributed propulsion system, hydrogen fuel engine, low-cost engine, etc. will be exhibited for the first time, "Taihang" engine will be displayed in series for the first time, and AGT "three light and one heavy" gas turbine will also be exhibited collectively for the first time. (Headquarters reporter Liu Rongrong, Zhang Yixiao and Hu Rui ..

so my Guess is, WS-20 can also display.

possible contenders are , FWS-17 , CJ-500 and more information related CJ-1000 certification and CJ-2000 prototype.

Okay so I dug deep in the internet and I found that the so called 6 th generation Japanese turbine alloy uses iridium in the nickel superalloy mix. Oof. Probably can't be commercialized.
