China’s J-20 Stealth Fighter is Getting a Major Boost - Thanks to Russia

China has struggled to build a sufficiently-powerful engine for the J-20 domestically, which is just as important as a thrust-vectoring capability. Ultimately the newest variant of the Chinese-built J-20, the J-20B, is intended to be equipped with powerful Chinese-designed WS-15 engines that would offer increased performance, likely better fuel efficiency, and a higher-altitude flight envelope. But because the production of the newer engine is lagging behind schedule, China has opted for a foreign design made in Russia.

Another dumb author who does not know a thing about Chinese engine development but regurgitating the usual BS So disregard it

This is super old stuff. J-20 started out using some uprated Russian AL-31 version but has since switched to a WS-10 version before the WS-15 is delivered. It was never getting a major boost from Russia because that was its first interim engine, which it has already upgraded from, not to.

This article is very shallow and dated; why would you post it?

Several glaring red flags in the article.

1. J-20 is not supermaneuverable like F-22 because it has no TVC. Didn't know that a plane must have TVC to be supermaneuverable. Guess that means Su-35 doesn't qualify, along with every other Russian fighter that isn't Su-57 or certain Su-30 variants.

2. Canards compromise stealth. Lol.

3. J-20B - there is no such thing.

4. "WS-15 missed deadlines" - According to whom or what? Is the author aware of the original required specs vs the required specs now? Is the author aware that WS-10s are going onto J-20s as an interim solution? Is the author aware that these WS-10 variants are producing almost as much thrust as the original WS-15 was intended to and that Russian engines, on the contrary, are no longer a desirable alternative?

What a load of bull. Get that trash article out of here. Ban that shit.

Great to see the WS-20 on the Y-20. I think for the likes of CR919 & 929 though the options should remain for the customers to chose the engine, i.e. maintain GE & whatever else in the market as engine options along with the WS-20. That way it keeps the carrot in play for western corporations to continue to work with Chinese companies to work out the kinks in these aircrafts in the Chinese market first. I mean, end of the day, these are essentially first and second gen wide body commercial airliners for China, and there is no shortcut to catch up. It'll keep the ecosystem open and competition alive much like what Tesla is doing to the electric car system. As long as we have demonstrated that we can achieve technological advances in these fields, there won't be no shortage of corporate suitors lobbying the western governments to lift the sanctions/restrictions for the pieces that China has already developed so they can gain a bigger piece of the commercial pie. As big as China is, it is still in its best interest to be able to cooperate with the rest of the western world on technologies. Its not a zero sum game between having the technology to build everything by oneself, or pick and chose components from others for the best commercial gains for oneself and their customer.
WS-20 will jump-start ACAE CJ1000A program. Both are the same type of turbofan engine maybe improve fuel efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
