But as Chinese, we need to let CCP now our concerns behind closed doors. That's how we Chinese do things. That's why we don't negotiate with Trump on Twitter. Jack Ma is a fool.

Push back from private enterprise is necessary to generate debate. And there has been a battle between the state and private entities in China.

Everyone is important for the growth of China.

Beware of "classically trained" economists. Especially those in the West. As they are the ones presiding over the largest economic catastrophy in human history. And they can't even see it or don't want to acknowledge it.

Having said that it is indeed disturbing that under Xi China is moving away from free market economics. And China will pay a price for that down the road. The only thing that's helping China right now is that the economic policies of the US, Japan and Europe are even worse than those of China.

So this is the conclusion of the Atlantic article

The U.S. supported Beijing’s economic reforms based on the hope that as China grew richer, everyone would benefit from its greater prosperity and security. But if Xi succeeds in replacing more of what China purchases from the world, he will also undermine the economic rationale for continued engagement with a brutal authoritarian regime. Xi thinks he is shielding China against isolation. He could instead be causing it.

Note that this has nothing to do with HOW China moves up the value chain, but THAT China moves up the value chain. What the author considers problematic is not really the method (state vs private) for China to acquire the capacity to manufacture advanced semiconductor or passenger aircrafts, but that if China doesn't have to import billions of dollars worth of Qualcomm chips and Boeings aircrafts there's no reason for America's continued engagement with China.

Of course the author made the classic mistake of thinking US = the whole world and that a decoupling from the U.S. means isolation from the world. This is simply not true in 2021. Look at the EU-China's investment deal. I think it has something to do with China's push to end reliance on U.S. semiconductor technology. EU has a sizeable semiconductor industry but not really comparable to the U.S. China spending resources on substituting American technology means less resources for industries that competes more with the EU. Win-Win.

Absolutely, which is why their analysis on China failing due to moving away from Western economic principles is never accurate.
Having said that it is indeed disturbing that under Xi China is moving away from free market economics. And China will pay a price for that down the road.
Not at all. China's specialty is developing its own systems and principles that uniquely suit China. They do not neatly fit into established definitions like "free market", etc... Different times in China's development (and technological advancement) call for different strategies. Moving away from an old strategy with diminishing returns (as China's growth is slowing under the old model) only shows a fearless and eager attitude to adapt and evolve.
The only thing that's helping China right now is that the economic policies of the US, Japan and Europe are even worse than those of China.
So basically, the only way to criticize China is the say that the whole world sucks and China just sucks less? LOL That's like saying Usain Bolt runs super slow but everyone else is cold molasses slow LOL

"Free market" like "democracy" taken in isolation is a sham in the context that one shouldnt dogmatically put the tool/means/labels ahead of the outcome/ends/results....

China's objective is to rapidly develop upwards by ascending the tech and value chain, how it does it, and the basket of tools used to overcome US containment frictions, is of secondary concern... it needs to start somewhere, make consistent gains and then can optimize iteratively as situation unfolds...

Dont drink the free market democrazy kool aid

This is what the Western media does. They spin like hell. They hate Xi for his accomplishments. They measure Chinese leaders by how much they think what's best for the US not what best for the Chinese people. It is literally the US hates more a Chinese leader for more what that Chinese leader has accomplished. Just look during Obama's term in office. China went from incapable of innovation to the US being desperate to stop China's march into advanced technology. They want to believe they're always looking out for the Chinese best interests yet just look at the US and it's handling of COVID-19. They bragged about being number one in handling outbreaks and they turned out to be the worse. Because of their democratic principles more people died as a result. Those are their own citizens. You think they would care how many Chinese died doing it their way just because they want to be right and still look number one by doing it their way. They even hated their own allies doing better hence why Trump was spinning numbers why they didn't do as well as the US was doing. That shows you how much they don't care about people in China, the world and even people in their own country.

If countries don't like China banning their products, then don't piss-off China. It's even more simple to understand. But of course they only see China exists to service them. That's why they don't understand the simple. That's why they cry victim when China reacts to their anti-China actions. Like a spoiled brat, they cry and pout and stamp their little feet if they don't get it both ways. China's economy was already fragile. China couldn't innovate. China was dependent on them not the other way around. They thought COVID-19 was China's Chernobyl yet China is the only country growing. The undoing of China's economic miracle...
