I think we were discussing China's drive on food waste a couple of weeks ago. But now someone at CNN decided to pick it up and run it as another Big bad authoritarian China story!

This is the thing that china is constantly up against. It is little wonder China always get a bad press!

CNN headline:

In authoritarian China, eating freely is a cherished activity. Now a food waste campaign wants to control meals, too

Honestly, no one should trust CNN's reporting in general regardless if it's global or local.

Do people in mainland China not take home unfinished dishes and eat leftovers? I've read that some Vietnamese take it as a status symbol to leave leftovers rather to take it home (to show you have $$ to waste), is it same for some folks in China?

Every table that I ate at always had someone to take home the leftovers

That's the trouble of China getting richer. These people needs to suffer hunger and hardship to appreciate the good life they are enjoying now!

Captain
Why is China being criticized for?.
Its not just leftovers when we eat out. If the truth is known, people in affluent countries are very wasteful when it comes to food. We overbuy and much of it gets thrown away. I only eat about 2/3rds of any main dish I order because I don't like the stuff they serve with it.
Fortunately for us on the farm, we do have working dogs we can feed our unwanted meat, and we also keep a few pigs we can feed our dinner leftovers. For the rest of society, it just gets thrown away.

"......... Throwing out a little food might seem like no big deal, but global emissions from wasted food are four times as much as those produced by aviation.

It's also expensive - food New Zealand sends to the landfill is variously estimated at being worth somewhere between

Love Food Hate Waste project manager Jenny Marshall said the average New Zealand household throws away about $644 worth of food each year.

At the most extreme, some households wasted a whopping 4 kilograms of food or more each week. On the other hand, those doing well could waste as little as 270g a week.........."

These Vietnamese want to show off despite their country being very backward.

Services expanding pretty quickly.
Lol, it seems that things are coming into place, if the US goes after alibaba, then Amazon is going to go bye bye and then we will see the US market take a tremendous bashing should all the Chinese stop using Amazon. I swear Trump is trying bankrupt all the companies in the USA. Sooner or later, there massive corporations are going to be hard pressed to get rid of him for becoming such a liability in regards to business and profits. He is becoming the best advertiser in the world in regards to not using US as a place to do invest because it is so unsafe and dangerous even to do business in the USA (with the riots, pandemic and now predatory business practices being a massive problem (most of which isn't a problem in China as of now)

US won't be getting any meaning manufacturing back.
1. You need will substantial investments to build up the basic infrastructures required to sustain the industrial complex. The ROI for these kinds of projects is never attractive for Wallstreet bankers who are addicted to Nasdaq. Huge federal funding is needed, possible to cut military spending
2. Lack of Americans willing to do manufacturing job, and this is especially true for the millennial gens and onwards. Then you have unions and minimum wages as icings. Is vocational training even popular in the US, as compared to France/Germany/Swiss?
3. Automation

the returning proposition is phony

there're not much to return. when america moved up the value-chain, much of the old industry were left to "wither on the vine", only large ones chose to move out, and much of those moved-out gradually localized.

if america wants a "make in america again", it largely need to rebuild the whole thing, and it is not a one off investment. because the rebuilt industries are not efficient, otherwise they wouldn't have moved out in the first place, taxpayers got to cover the operating cost.
